“Good hotel - but don't eat here!”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Location, staff anf hotel itself are all fine, and even without a car you can take exciting bus trips to other parts of the island from the town or from stops 20 minutes walk away. But the buffet breakfasts and dinners are terrible: the worse I have come across anywhere: poor quality food kept lukewarm for hours on 'hotplates'. Even the soup was barely warm. We had 13 dinners and lunches in restaurants elsehere in Portugal, and every one was a delight. There is no excuse for this awful food.

Hotel that is a bit running down and needs to be renovated to upgrade to a 2012 standard. Price/quality (we paid €62/night) the level is acceptable, but appealing it is not (though clean!). We had a room with a door connecting the neighbouring room, and could hear everything what was said by our neighbours (fortunately the Germans went to bed early, so, it didn't bother our sleep, but I can imagine it could be hell in high season). The dinner was a buffet that was in island terms rather expensive (I think €20/pp), so we decided to have dinner at the beach bar opposite the hotel, which was a very good choice (but make a reservation, as it was crowdy even in low season).

Room Tip: Seen the distance to Funchal, I would recommend to visit Ponta Do Sol from the capital where you hav...

Stayed in november/december 2011 celebrating special birthday and had a wonderful time. As soon as we arrived we were delighted with the hotel and views.Hotel staff all very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Very attractive hotel built/restored in traditional style. Our room was very spacious and luxurious with lovely balcony. We were all inclusive and food was plentiful and good. Very good fish. Some of the beach is sandy and water was warm and we had lots of sunshine. Am glad we were not put off by previous reviews. It amazes me that people can be so critical - they need to pay ritz style prices and go elsewhere. My friend loved the upstairs roof terrace for sunbathing. Will definitely go back again. I did not use the indoor pool but it looked nice.

The staff were very good, rooms good but not exceptional. Food was very disappointing to say the least. There were three themed restaurants. The Italian was so poor that I would have thrown it back in a restaurant. Japenese restaurant was uncomfortable with equally poor food. Maderian was reasonable. In the main restaurant the Buffet was plentiful, cold was good, hot not so overcooked, meat tough. Good service in Bars and snack bars (actually the best food) We had 7 nights. Ambience good, my French language was put to the test . . . . . .

We stayed here for five nights as part of a Ramblers Holiday. The situation is lovely and all rooms face the beach. Our room was huge but there was very little space for storing clothes and as we were there for so long we wanted to unpack completely.
Breakfast was actually very good but dinner seemed to lack imagination. There didn't seem to be enough staff around and the plates didn't get cleared. They weren't too keen on us having tap water even though we were buying wine as well.
The staff were pleasant enough and did sort out problems but a bit more enthusiasm would have been nice. One day we got back to discover that the card had been taken out of our light switch and as a result the fridge had been off all day and there was no apology when we pointed out that we had been storing food there for our packed lunches.

This place hasn't quite got what it takes in spite of being (in theory) a 4 star hotel. It looks good with blonde wood floors and balconies in some rooms but lets itself down in multiple ways. Firstly, while there is a free computer in the lobby with a sporadic internet connection, there is no internet in the rooms and they want 10 Euros/day to use the password protected wifi in the lobby. Breakfast is good except that there is only one coffee machine for 40-50 guests who all want to use it at the same time in the morning resulting in an endless line for access. They also don't replace used towels and even hang the wet ones on the line over the bath. That means it isn't possible to work out who used what towel if there is more than one person in the room. I wouldn't stay there again.

We stayed for 7 nights. We got a very good deal which made the stay even more pleasant. Would recommend hire car if you are up for it - need to be a confident driver to navigate the bends and steep climbs across the island.
The room was so spacious and everything very clean. We were all inclusive and, as with most such deals, the food can become repetative. The staff were very helpful. Agree that the pool could do with a make over and some atmosphere added to the very modern and spacious lounge area which we spent most evenings in.
They increased the waiting staff in the dining room during the week which was needed to keep up with the turnover of guests eating. Funchal was lovely to visit, Santa Cruz, Jardin da mer and the peninsula on the east of the island. We also paid to go to a Folklore evening at a hotel in Funchal. It was a good end to our relaxing week in the sun (well for most of the week anyway!!).

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for a balcony - those on 4th floor the largest. We were two couples travell...
