“Great hotel”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

I booked a room with balcony in this hotel in January 2012. The room was incredibly spacious, clean and smartly decorated. The village of Ponta do Sol is a delight. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Ponta do Sol is a tiny sea-hugging village backed by sheer cliffs, so you feel snug and excluded from the rest of the world. Views are lovely - beach is pebbly but inviting. Sunsets spectacular. Its also surrounded by banana plantations. This island is awash with flowers, luscious fruits and is a total garden of eden. Botanist friends of mine visit regularly for the rare plants. We saw something like 8 varieties of 'passion fruit' alone - all very different.

The hotel is ok. Big rooms, but shabby. Naff decor. Ours smelt distinctly of smoke when we entered, and we had to request the bed to be made up as a double instead of the twins we found on arrival, despite booking a double. Lovely view from small juliet-balcony. My husband declined use of the pool - but I used it a few times. Indoor, which is sad in this climate. Overheated and overchlorinated and not really a nice place to linger. Gym equipment was unusable. Hotel staff were pleasant enough.

Luckily we did not book the 'all inclusive'. Having spotted the bland menu and the evener blander looking displayed food, and also having tasted the breakfast, we were glad we were eating elsewhere. Just as a marker of how wrong they got it, on this island teeming with local fruits, bulging with bananas and all kinds of exotic species we hadn't encountered before, they only served tinned, TINNED fruit at breakfast!!! What a travesty. The food across the road on the beach is good- lots of reasonable seafood. We had a very long leisurely and quite boozy lunch one day looking out to sea which particularly sticks in my mind. - This is what holidays are about, aren't they? And we ate once in the hotel down the street. We also treated ourselves twice to dinner at "Estalagem da Ponto do Sol" This lovely hotel is perched on the clifftop overlooking the tiny bay of Ponto do Sol; its so luxurious you don't even have to walk up there is a lift in the cliffside. Dinner here was lovely - very good local seafood and Madeiran specialities. A little pricey but worth it. You can have drinks beforehand in the cliff top garden watching the sun set. Stunning. Wish we'd stayed there.

As per the other reviewers, definitely hire a car. The island is worth exploring. Fantastic walks along the Levada - little trails beside the hillside irrigation canals, teeming with flora and good views. An island of difference and not your usual Portugal or Spain. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Hotels with sea view are a must as the back of the hotel just looks out on cliff and road. Get a bal...

We have been to Madeira before and we loved it. This time we decided to go to the hotel Baia do Sol situated in Ponta do Sol near the beach. We hired a car and made our own way to the hotel as there is a lot to see. We had never been to Madeira on Christmas, so we booked it to go in December last year and although we went over Christmas, the weather was still very nice and warm. When we arrived at the hotel staff were very friendly ad spoke very good English, so that was not a problem. The hotel was very nice and clean throughout, we paid extra for a sea view and we really loved it. Room was very comfortable, bathroom with nice shower, satellite TV, big king size bed, safe etc. the food was lovely with plenty of variety to choose from, the restaurant was very nice, we went on an all inclusive basis and it was worth it. Paid extra to have a delicious dinner on Christmas' Eve with plenty of traditional food and lots of fish dishes which we absolutely adore.
Then on New Year's Eve we went to Funchal (capital city) which from the hotel is roughly 30 minutes drive and watched about 15 minutes of continuous firework everywhere.
We were absolutely amazed and surprised about how many people were there.
We are really looking forward to go back this year on Christmas!

Room Tip: A Sea View is a must! Perfect!

Just returned from another great stay. The hotel is immaculate, we were on the All inclusive Special which was great for our belly's and pockets. The food, staff, room and hotel overall was excellent. We will definetly be returning. Yes the beach is rocky but you have toremeber madeira is a volcanic island. If you want a golden sandy beach then head for The Calheta beach, there is a bus stop 200 yards fron the hotel which takes you there which is approx 10 mins and only costs a Euro! Hotelsbooked.com have the best rates for this hotel, i searched for 2 days and no one could beat their quote. If you want any more tips feel free to email me.

Room Tip: Top Floor rooms have the best Sea Views

Granted we had just come from a lovely hotel in funchal but the enotel in ponta do sol lacks personality & facilities. We had based our booking on a few features - proximity to the beach & promises of WiFi. The beach is right across the road & despite it being rocky there are wooden platforms for you to lie on in the sun. Getting in & out of the water feels treacherous because of the large rocks under foot but otherwise it was ok. WiFi on the other hand, wasn't. They use the free Madeira WiFi, which seems intermittent, if you're lucky enough to get it at all. The buffet breakfast is pretty basic & standard, we probably needed a break from gorging ourselves on delicious breakfasts after our last place - perhaps our waistlines will thank us for staying here! On the upside, hotel day vila down th road does fabulous food with good music.

We stayed here for 2 nights, and had 2 great diners in the restaurant across the street (grilled seafood and beef) with a great sunset. unfortunately they are working on the tunnels, so you do hear some work between 8 and 5pm but then we were of exploring the island by car. The sea is not very inviting for a swim, and the pool is to hot and moist due to the sauna that is located in the same room as the pool. Restaurant was only buffet for 25 euro, which we did not take, too expensive, more value for money across the street,

This hotel is in a beautiful location but suffers from being in a low cost group. The rooms are large and most have a full sea view. The main draw backs are lack of transport so you definitely need a car, the beach is poor and rocky and equipmentvin the gym is old and doesn't work and the pool is very small. The food is standard euro fare, meat and veg and therefore we ate next door at the hotel du vile, which was superb. We stayed all-inclusive, but this only covered basic drinks such as house wine and did not even include coca cola or 7up.
