We got to Royal Orchid through the RCI timeshare exchange. We were four adults sharing a suite consisting of one bedroom with a private bathroom with shower and a living room that had a bed that opened up for two people, and another bathroom with shower. The room overlooked the sea which was lovely at all times of day and night - and also quiet.
Kitchen could have been better supplied with dishes, cleaning materials. We had not expected the rooms to be cleaned each day so we were pleasantly surprised - that is, beds made, towels replaced.

The hotel wifi only worked from the lobby but due to our room location above the lobby on the next floor, about 75% of the time it worked from our room too.

Parking was fine -- although restricted in the hours you could come in. Perhaps our only real complaint.

Distance from both the airport and Funichal, main city, was just fine. Took two minutes to get onto the main road and then about ten minutes in either direction. Area was quiet, lots of restaurants around so you could settle in after a long day, supermarket not far away.

Madeira is a wonderful place to visit. We were there a week and found plenty to do and see. Hiking, museums, views, gardens.

Highly recommend.

Nice hotel, very clean. Great view. Good facilities.
Most staff barely speak English, but cannot be bothered to admit it, so they usually spread whatever when you ask something.
Some staff at the reception were rude and not helpful.
Gym is good, but for 16+, so young men wouldn't be allowed..
Anyway, it would be a great place for tired people (i was going to say "for 40+", but my 40 y o boyfriend commented..), pregnant women, and those who have small babies. Absolutely inappropriate for young people and children 3+. No playground, no shops, no entertainment within reachable distance.
The hotel is only 20 min away by bus from Funchal, but buses run once an hour..
There are two small food shops next to the hotel (overpriced, of course), but the choice of products is poor, and one of them seemed to have a non stop siesta.
A few bars and restaurants in this area, but only two of them were bothered to be open late ("we are open till 10 pm because we need to sleep then"..).
Actually, in my impression, local people were not untested in making money by attracting clients, and wouldn't make an effort for improving their service.
Also, always double check bills in restaurants and small shops!

This property reminds me of a dated all inclusive hotel that you might have found in Mexico, Cuba or the Dominican Republic in 1980. It is dated and in the most developed (and frankly horrible) area of Madeira. Madeira is beautiful, but not in the area between Funchal and the airport....stay in the more remote and wild areas and you will have a fantastic time. The food here was not especially good, the evening entertainment laughable and the pools and ocean chilly (in July). Take the time to find a more secluded hotel in a less developed area.

We spent 10 days here through Christmas in 2011 and 2012 (and are planning again this year).

The staff isnt always friendly at the front desk ... one woman in particular can come off as downright rude.

The facilities are very nice ... indoor pool/sauna/jacuzzi/hammam ... great breakfast ... beautiful outdoor pool and direct access to the sea with the possibility of snorkeling/scuba (diving and lessons) at the foot of the hotel. Nice gym facilities as well!

There is a great restaurant just around the corner (they specialize in espetada) and in the opposite direction, a small street with a few decent restaurants, a small convenience store and cafes.

Convenient from the airport ... easy bus access ... and LOADS of things to do on the island. All in all very enjoyable ... peaceful ... relaxing ...

Book early if you want a massage/facial there is one lady who does it (shared between several hotels).

Oh yeah .. and the BEST passion fruit poncha on the island in my opinion!!

Room Tip: For a family or small group, the penthouse suite (they have changed the name I am not sure what it i...

Stayed for one week in late May 2013. Chose a location out of the main town on the island to guarantee a bit of piece and quiet. Very nice hotel. Very clean, staff very friendly and attentive. We had a room with a separate bedroom, whilst daughter had a bed in the living area. Kitchenette well equipped but we did not cook our meals as we were half board. Food on the whole was excellent. Lots of fish dishes (not surprisingly!) which were really tasty. Bar prices were acceptable but bottled water in the dining room was expensive. Made good use of the courtesy bus that takes you into Funchal. Glad I did not have to drive as some of the roads on the island are a bit scary and fast. Indoor swimming pool was good, but the outdoor one was rather cold. Can get a bit windy on the terraces, but this may have been the time of year. Overall had a great stay and would definitely return.

Stayed here in a 1 bedroom suite with a sea view (side on) last April. Room very plain and simple with plenty of space and a small kitchenette. Wouldn't recommend attempting much cooking though beyond making a drink and a snack. Fairly comfortable.

Has great access to the sea although the location is very windy so we had a red flag all week. Small pool and a reasonable gym. Good choice of small terraces.

Breakfast was average. Nice bar. Friendly staff.

Can park a car.

Room Tip: Go for sea view

Stayed for 2 weeks in March. Chosen because it was outside the city with good access to the expressway. Sea view room had lounge with fully equipped kitchenette and an extra shower room as well as the en-suite bedroom. Hot and cold continental breakfast was good and varied each day. We changed to half board for second week and found the buffet evening meals to be typical of Madeira, well cooked and varied. Room very clean, reception staff on the whole helpful and obliging. Only problem was the limited parking spaces on the hotel frontage, but there was a larger public parking area at the bottom of the next street which we used without any problems from time to time. Things could be much more difficult in the height of the season. Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are really good, but it can be rather noisy on the lower floors near to the pools and...
