“Best view ever”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

I spent 2 weeks in Roca Mar hotel. It has very good location on Madeira southern coast (sunny part of the island). Rooms with adequate to Portuguese 4* decent standard. Hotel staff is friendly and helpful and speak various foreign languages (English, German, French, Spanish etc.). Restaurant with large terraces with great ocean view. Nice surprise waiting on my birthday - a bottle of tasty Portuguese sparkling wine.
Hotel "Roca Mar" together with Hotel "Royal Orchid" creates a nice, well situated complex for all tourists who want to discover the beauty of the island.

Very nice hotel, not too fancy, food very good, big choice especially for dinner. Jacuzzi very big and pretty handy after all day of climbing. Nice and quiet area, breathtaking views of ocean, cliffs, mountains etc. I rated 4 out of 5 beacause I have two small remarks: no tea/coffee making facilities in the room and prices of drinks in reastaurant/bar quite expensive in comparison to prices in other cafes/bars in the town. But overall very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: ask for ocean view room then you can watch sunrise everyday

The hotel is set in a beautiful, peaceful location one of best sea views I have ever had, the sea views from the dining room, the different terraces and different level going down to the sea are stunning and there are plenty of sunbeds. Tables for breakfast on the terrace are set, weather permitting The sea view rooms are large and the balconies are more like a terrace, approx 10' x 12'. They are private and not overlooked, receiving the sun most of the day. The bathrooms have both baths and showers. The rooms, as all the areas of the hotel, are immaculately clean. Bed linen is changed most days, and towels as often as you wish. Also supplied are large green towels for use in the gym or outside. The rooms have excellent air con.

The food in the restaurant is very good, breakfast has a buffet with choices of cooked breakfast, plus cold meat and cheese, cereals, different choices of breads and a cake, some salad items also fruit and yogurt. The coffee is excellent and there is a wide variety of teas.

Dinner is also very good, usually at least two varieties of fish, a meat choice, pasta and vegetarian, plus veg. and salad and always a soup and different breads
the variety of sweets are also very good, again buffet style.

Th staff are great and very helpful

There is entertainment four nights a week, one night a demonstration of local dancing with a group of about 40 and guest join in if they wish, three nights there are groups of musicians who are excellent playing a wide variey of music for all tastes.

The courtsey bus is reliable and leaves 4 times daily., with the same amount of return trips to Funchal.

The gym which for use of this hotel at the Royal Orchid is excellent and accessable directly from the Roca Mar.

There is a supermarket 5 mins walk away and some good restaurants nearby..

I can highly recommend this hotel and it certainly deserves its 4 star rating and I will be returning again in the New Year.. I would recommend always to book a seaview.

A trip i would recommend is the Sunday hop on hop of bus leaving every 2 hours from 9.30am. The whole trip should you stay on the bus is about 1.30, but its is great to beable to get off when you want to and it is worth seeing the Sunday Market at Santo da Serra. The main other places are Camacha, Santa Cruz. Thecost is 11 euro booked at reception which has to be booked the day beforehand.

Room Tip: A sea view room, non of the rooms seems noisy. Some ofthe lowest level rooms terraces are not as p...

I and my honey spouse stayed in Roca Mar hotel for 6 nights in October. It was one of the best vacations we ever had. We completely fall in love with Madeira.
Roca Mar has the perfect location with very cozy terraces on the slope were one can have sunbathes, a comfortable enter to the ocean, a free bus to Funchal (only three times per day, no buses on Sunday), close to the public bus station, you can enjoy facilities of the Royal Orchid hotel free of charge (gym, pool with fresh water etc.), Atalaia diving center (with very friendly staff, diving is strongly recommended to everyone), 15 min by taxi from the airport and many other positive moments.
Roca Mar has only two negative points: is a bit shabby (as we understand the last renewal works were made in 1996) and doesn't have double bed (if you take double bed room you will face twin beds just standing together) which is not very comfortable if you are travelling in couple.
If you decided to visit Madeira and stay in Roca Mar Hotel you won't regret it!

A wonderful hotel, quite unique in the way it's numerous balconies, cabanas and pools are set into the cliff face. There's even a little bar down there near the sea, good for refreshments if you venture away from the main hotel area on the cliff top.

The rooms are clean and well appointed. There's only three British speaking TV channels (all news) but that doesn't really matter. The sea facing balconies are wonderful, see my pic for the view. I would try and avoid the mountain facing rooms though...they just overlook the street. Wifi in the rooms would be good but you can get good, hi-speed wifi (free too) in the lobby/reception area and the bar/restaurant area too.

Parking is a bit chaotic round there if you hire a car. There is a little private car park just down the road from the Roca Mar though which you have access to on request so no drama.

The staff are all excellent. Reception very efficient and happy to help with whatever. The bar and restaurant staff are also superb, quick to look after you with what you need. We stayed B+B and the breakfast was very good indeed. Plentiful supplies of fresh bacon, eggs, mushrooms, breads, rolls, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, tea, coffee, juices and so on. Phew!

Finally, the various facilities are outstanding. The sea pool, the decking and sunbeds, the health club including gym, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi. All top drawer.

This is one of the few hotels that tick all the boxes because we went as two families with kids aged 15 and 11. The kids loved it, so did we. But it's also a great for older people (nice and quiet) and younger families and couples too.

We''ll be back I would imagine...

Room Tip: If you're staying B+B only, ask them for a room that includes a kitchenette. There's a litt...

We visited wonderful Madeira in summer, a time we had not been there before. We also picked Canico as we had visited Funchal a couple of time. The hotel is in a magnificent location overlooking the sea and the sunbeds are arranged over the cliff face. The pictures a re right and that what drew us to the hotel in the first place.

We were looked after by a wonderful staff team, nothing was too much trouble for them from the best receptionist we have ever encountered anywhere ( Bonita? to the head waiter and bar staff. We stayed bed and breakfast which meant we could eat in nearby restaurants, about 7 or in the hotel. I'm glad we did not take up the half board option as the buffet would have been difficult to me and my food allergies!.We must admit the best meal we had was here and what a setting watching the sun go down over the sea. Breakfast was fine with lots of choice and everything you would expect in such an hotel.

We had a land view, as this was an extra holiday. It was spacious and clean. It was overlooked by the road but for us that was no problem. There was all you would expect except for a fridge, and it was hot, and a waist bin. Small things but not a deal breaker

I am told by my other half that I must be more subjective in my reviews which is difficult as I love my travelling and enjoy everything about it. What's the point of moaning when we are so lucky to visit such wonderful places as this. So I have only given the hotel 4 stars owing to the lack of facilities in the bedroom. Would recommend if you want peace and quiet and being away from it all.

Located on a sloppy rock, the hotel offers fantastic views of open water up to the horizon.
Due to its location , it has a lot of windy corridors, many staircases and a few lifts only (not suitable for disabled tourists).
Rooms facing the twin Royal Orchid hotel experience a disturbing noise from the beauty parlor-and-gym aircondioners belonging to Royal Orchid.
Breakfasts are full American/English breakfasts. Dinners, however, are rather bland: meat, fish, veg, salads- all prepaeed to unspecified "international" taste. Fruits were almost non-existent.

There's a minimarket (with rather high prices) some 200 metres away. The area is mainly residential (Canico de Baixo, i.e. Canico Lower). Proper town, Canico Upper is some 3 km away up the hill (waking there and back is problematic as there are practically no pavements but there's a car rental agency next to the hotel. A small car can be had at 40 euro with full insurance). Cars can be rented cheaper but without full liability so when returning it, a discussion opens about every scratch...

Funchal is some 8-10 km away, easily reachable through an excellent motorway.
A cable car ride in Funchal followed by unusual sledge ride down the hill on streets open for normal traffic - these are the "must".

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard shared with Royal Orchid hotel can be noisy due aircons of RO's gym...
