“Not so bad”
Reviewed February 16, 2012

The location is excellent (1/ not too far from the airport and the Capitol of Madera - Funchal, 2/ on a high rock with fantastic view).
The style of the hotel is a bit oldfashioned, the swimming pool and space in the "concret beach" are too small. The breakfast at all not adequate for the four stars hotel! The dinner a bit better. Prices of beer and wine extremely high (you can buy the same wine in supermarket for euro 3 or for euro 20 in the Hotel Bar). But if you are lucky withy weather, you could stand to be there for one week.

Room Tip: Try to ask for the seaview room. But it may happen they would extra charge you for it. Check what ki...

The Roca Mar proved to be good value for money and allowed the relaxation we were looking for at a reasonable price. We stayed in a timeshare studio but there were no sales teams to distract from the location.
It is an easy 10 minute drive from the airport and only a little further into Funchal. Driving is easy and the signposting good. There is a courtesy bus into Funchal if needed. On street parking is limited but never a problem during our stay.
The studio was of a reasonable size with uninterrupted sea views from the large balcony but the design of the hotel gives privacy on the balcony. Air conditioning and heating were fine. The "partial kitchen" had all we needed to make simple meals and included microwave and dishwasher. The large bed was comfortable and bathroom large with bath and shower.
The staff were helpful and friendly and cleaning good.
We did not have any meals in the hotel preferring to eat out when exploring this picturesque island or preparing snacks for ourselves. There was evening entertainment in the lounge bar but this is not our thing. It was a bit cool for sunbathing but there are terraces going down the cliffs to the sea where the pool looked inviting. There is spa, pool etc in the Royal Orchide, the sister hotel next door.
There are plenty of restaurants in the area. It is easy to reach other parts of the island due to the proximity of the via rapido. Tours, car hire and bike hire is easy to arrange from the hotel.
We would stay here again. Not luxury and a bit old school but clean, welcoming and well positioned with value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

The hotel is conveniently situated about 10 minutes from the airport by car and similar distance to Funchal. Local buses cost 1.75 euros to and from Funchal and the hotel runs buses to and from there during the day.
The hotel is clean and tidy and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, going out of their way to provide whatever was required. The property is in places (eg the furniture in the lounge to the right of the reception area) in need of some up grade but it did not detract from our enjoyment. The library area is very comfortable and there were books to borrow or exchange in a number of languages. Our room (713) was nicely furnished and we had a panoramic view of the sea and across to the Porto Santo islands across a well tended small garden area. We particularly liked the fact that it was possible to have sun loungers in quiet corners away from other residents so that there was no loud "round the pool" culture. There was a choice of pools or swimming in the sea and the facilities at a sister hotel next door were available. There was a nice bar to sit and have a drink or a pleasant area outside and the cocktails were excellent (perhaps a little too good!!).
The breakfast wasn't particularly good although the eggs were always freshly cooked. I feel that the breakfast experience could be improved by having tea and coffee served at the table instead of from machines so that it was hotter when you drank it. Also a better quality of juice would have helped. The bread rolls were good and the toasting machine actually worked. Having said that the quality of the food from the A La Carte Menu in the evening was excellent (particularly the steak cooked on a rock) and we returned there by choice more than once.
In order to be helpful to people who may read this review I think it is necessary to say that this is not a hotel to visit if you are not fully mobile or struggle with stairs. It is built into a rock face and there are numerous steps. Even where there are ramped areas these are very steep and I would not have liked to negotiate the hotel with a wheelchair. I also don't think that you would be able to access some areas at all. Some elderly ladies seemed to not be able to get to the lower reaches of the hotel. Overall we had a very pleasant holiday. We would certainly return there in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view and rooms 701 to 720 I think (certainly around 713) were good.

The hotel is a bit old fashioned but the setting is nice, with a lot of space for sunbathers. The pool is much smaller then the fotos suggest, but the ocean is directly accessible if the surf waves are not too strong. Our room was spacious, everything clean, well equipped and we had ocean view without having booked it.
Every evening there were music events in the bar, but the noice always stopped at 11 pm.
Cannot say anything about the restaurant. The breakfast buffet was average, but the coffee was awful for German palates.
The stuff speaks Englisch and German but the service at the reception is poor. They refused to call the local car rental "Bravacar" to tell them that we asked the car to be delivered an hour later than booked. They said that we had to call them by our own. This wouldn't be acceptable in Germany!
All in all it is worth three stars, but not a four star accomodation, ok for a short stay of one week or shorter but I would not stay there for longer.

The hotel is very old fashioned. The breakfast was terrible in both quality and variety. Awful coffee and juices. The swimming pool is very small and shallow.
We stayed in a studio with a large veranda and a kitchenette. The room and the bathroom was very spacious. The ocean view was limited when seated since the wall was very tall. They charge extra for the room’s safe and there is no free internet at all in the hotel. The hotel gym was decent.

This is a nice hotel, can't say wonderful, but don't have many complaints other then the food at breakfast wasn't great.
However, the hotel is very clean, and most of the staff are friendly, with good English.
Plenty of spaces to sunbath, however the hotel is a bit out of the way from the town Funchal. There is a free shuttle bus though.
Beautiful restaurant at the top of the road, it is lovely, with lots of plants etc, and well priced, so definitely check it out. However, on the stretch, the "bar restaurant" restaurant was nice but made all of us sick for 2 days, which was a waste.
Reids hotel is definitely worth a visit for afternoon tea between 3pm and 5pm. Taxi can take you there or a public bus. Lovely hotel, with gorgeous views, and delicious food, though expensive obviously.
Entertainment at night is ok, but not great. Very windy by the sea as well.
Overall quite a good hotel, but if I was returning I would ensure that I was staying in the hotel zone in funchal, not canico.

Room Tip: Try not to be on the ground floor as can see people eating and sunbathing write outside your balcony...
