“November birthday stay”
Reviewed November 24, 2011

Back from a lovely holiday in Madeira,so glad we decided on this hotel.Loved it,fantastic atmosphere, staff couldn't do enough to help you, with a smile(not always seen in hotels these days). We loved the food, much of it cooked with herbs from their fabulous herb garden.good selection to cater for all tastes.
The local village, very nice, too steep for me to walk to so asked to arrange a taxi to a local restaurant,to my surprice they send their own car to fetch you and bring you back(where would you normally get such service)Complementry bus helps to get around yet returns you to a lovely part if the beautiful island.
Entertainment low key but pleasant, folk show one evening, very enjoyable.
Would recomment to any one and certainly we would both return to this hotel.Room beautiful, flowers husband ordered gorgeous, fizz etc in room made it a perfect birthday.
I have disability problems yet found the hotel easy to get around to all areas and the request of being near a lift was dealt with spot on.

Room Tip: put in for any requests they will do their best,of that I am sure.very good staff

We stayed just one night at the end of our Madeira holiday to be near the airport. Very pleasant room on -2 floor terrace onto garden. Super bright orange bathroom with walk in shower. Room had free fridge- you could order stuff to put in it at hotel prices or use it for your own food/drink.

Outdoor pool just round the corner up 1 flight of stairs. Public areas are very nice but corridors seem endless! Buffet breakfast with huge choice including fresh mint and lemon to make tea with. Free wifi in public rooms with fast connection. We didn't eat in the restaurants- a bit expensive for us.

We were looking to find somewhere in October which would provide some warmth and relaxation. Having never been to Madeira we were unsure what to expect. However we were not disappointed. The weather was was good but we were informed it is not normally that settled in October. The hotel is beautiful with lovely rooms and one of the nicest bathrooms i have seen in a four star hotel. The television as far more than the average number of channels and the staff are very helpful and polite. There are ample sunbeds with a nice pool and gardens. If you wanted a change the indoor pool, gym and steam room offers refreshing change . There is free access to computers and also a fast wi fi system if using you're own laptop. The free bus service to the capital Funchal is also an added advantage and it is worth taking a visit. There are a wide array of shops that are distinctly free of the usual blow up beds and other cheap holiday giftware you experience in most holiday destinations. The cable cars are well worth a ride.
Although we were approached by a time share in the street this was only a mild distraction and did not spoil the day
Dependent on you're personal preferences and expectations some people may consider the hotel to be isolated as there is only a few resturants and a spar shop within local walking distance. Canico is a bus ride or if you prefer a 5 euro taxi ride away. It is a small pleasant village but limited in what it offers.
Without being over critical, and again it depends on what people want or expect from there holiday, we found the entertainment to be very low key and lacking in variety. It was mainly either an organist most evenings interspersed with a dance act on one evening and a parrot show on the other.
The food was also very repetative and limited in choice. I feel that if a significant improvement could be made in both entertainment and food then this would be an exceptional hotel. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who just wants to unwind and relax. It is certainly geared to the more mature age group and therefore unlikely to attract many young people

The hotel has been renovated recently and it clearly shows it !!
We stayed in a studio (and paid only 60 Euro per night, incl. breakfast) which was really spacious with a very large/wide and soft twin bed and a bedcouch. We had reserved a baby-cot which was already put in our room when we arrived (at no additional costs).
The bathroom was beautiful and with a very nice shower and clean soft towels.
Small but very functional kitchenette.
Large balcony with partial seaview.
Very clean !!
Television with very extensive choice of channels.
Evening entertainment (singing, dancing) for free.
Large outside swimming pool with enough deckchairs. Rather small inside pool, next to area with various massage and spa-facilities. Small fitness area available.
Big library with many international books and magazines freely available for guests.
Kind and helpful staff at reception and in the restaurants.
Two (rather old) computers freely available in the library area, and complimentary WiFi close to the lobby-area (although sometimes weak reception).
The breakfast buffet was good and provided enough choice of good quality.
Dinner buffet was less tasteful and too expensive (for the mediocre quality of the food).
Location close to the sea (beach ?) and therefore outside the atmospheric old town of Canico.
The hotel is situated between the airport and Funchal (both at ca. 11 km.).
Free shuttle bus available to Funchal and back (4 times daily)
All-in-all : since the recent renovation, this hotel really provides excellent price-quality !

This is a hotel that makes an excellent base. The room was the best we have experienced anywhere. It was like new, spotless, lovely sea view from the balcony, silent at night. The air conditioning was so good it required no adjusting and was almost silent. Shower was big enough for two.

Very useful free fridge and tea & coffee making kettle and tray ( consumables and bottle of water are chargable if used). Safe also chargable as is nornal.

We were bed and breakfast only as the hotel restaurants and even the pool bar were almost twice the normal local rate for meals but they were still very popular with others.

The buffet breakfast had to cater for various tastes but we found it very good, if a little variable in quality day to day. Eggs and omlettes can be cooked in front of you to order but the chef used a carton of pasturised egg rather than fresh eggs and that practice requires changing ( or hiding) as it caused quite a few grumbles from guests. Self service fried eggs were like plastic ones from a joke shop, I was unable to even cut my yoke with a knife so had to abandon it but it gave us a laugh. Very good fruit salad and also lovely oats marianated in yoghurt and delicious with the juicy figs on offer. Very nice breads and hot too and try the bowls of raspberry jam, tasting like home made. Various meats and cheeses for the German clientel and the tea was excellent for us British. Superb service from a very dedicated staff.

Not a place for entertainment or games and children could get bored but the pools were very good indeed. Free computers on the Internet were a great plus point but there were only two. Reception was well staffed and the staff were more than helpful to offer every assistance and advice with great patience.

The free hotel bus was excellent except that it requires pre-booking to be sure of a seat. The driver even turned back to Funchal when we realised we had left our shopping behind.

This is a hotel that we would return to without any hesitation. Fabulous situation.

Stayed here for one week in October 2011. Weather was very good although it does get cloudy in the afternoons which can catch you out if you go on a mountain trip as you can end up with a foggy view!! Hotel has been recently refurbished and was clean and spaceous but the outside does look dated particularly against the hotel next door. Hotel location is by the sea but very stoney beach so can be difficult to get into the sea. Nice promenade to walk along by the hotel but there are no shops and only one cafe at the end. There are no shops near the hotel except a little spar supermarket up a steep hill approx 10-15 minutes walk away. The hotel shop is reasonably priced when compared to shops in Funchal and the tourist areas. The outdoor and indoor pool, although it states are heated, were both colder than the sea. The outdoor pool is mainly deep whereas the indoor pool is very shallow! There are no activities at this hotel during the day although there is an indoor table tennis table and pool table and a small library with 2 computers in which you can have free internet access. The hotel does provide a courtesy bus to Funchal which you have to book the day before as it is very popular. The hotel rooms are well equiped. All have coffee making facilities but there is a sign that if you want them replenished it does cost 3 euros. Rooms also had a fridge which was great, good showers, loads of storage areas and TV with several channels in English. The only toiletries provided were the soap in dispensers on the wall by the sink and in the shower, and shower caps. I was in a room which you felt you were going down to the basement to get to. You also had to go down long dark corridors, so not the best area, but if you are in one of the higher up rooms in the main part of the hotel it was OK. There is live entertainment at the hotel in the evenings and in some of the rooms you are able to hear the entertainment clearly in your room even with the door and fire doors shut. My friends were in such a room and did complain after the first night. The hotel reception were very helpful and changed their room straight away. It was obvious it wasn't the first time the hotel had complaints about the noisy rooms! Food was OK - strange mixture of salads but main dishes fine and a good selection of desserts, but became very repetative by the end of the week. Staff were very friendly and helpful, service was good. Satisfied with stay but not sure if I would go back to this hotel.

We stayed for a week B&B late Sept 11, and had a great time. Our room was over the Trattoria but the sound proofing is good and we weren't disturbed at all. The view from the room was perfect, overlooking the sea as promised, large and comfortable. The staff were friendly, helpful and always smiling, special mention to Luis, Bar Manager. Only gripe (tiny one) about the hotel - the hospitality tray refills have to be ordered daily and are charged to your room. Tip - buy bottled water from the in-hotel shop - it really is cheaper than the Spar shop in the village. Restuarants on site are good, especially the Trattoria, but there are some in the village if you want to venture out in the evening. Not a bad meal had all week. We found the evening entertainment a bit cheesy, if I'm honest, but there were plenty of other guests who thoroughly enjoyed it! I wouldn't say this was a place for teenagers, unless they're big on sunbathing and swimming, but for those who want a laid back relaxing hotel, this pretty much fits the bill.
