Hotel Riu Palace Madeira
Ranked #1 of 13 Hotels in Canico
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 4, 2014

Returned home from a week's holiday on 30/6/14.We have been to a couple of Riu's before but the Palace in Canico,Madeira was the best.It is located about half way between the airport and Funchal and the transfer is about 20 minutes.
We checked into our lovely big room with a nice balcony. There was a "semi"sea view.
There was plenty of storage/cupboard space and a free safe.
At meal times there was always a good choice of food with plenty of salad options, usually there was one fish dish, a couple of pastas and several meat choices.Sometimes there was Calamari if you like that sort of food. Then there was plenty of fruit, cheeses and ice cream. One day at breakfast,I counted 10 different types of tea.Bottled water is available at reception.
I did hear through the grapevine that there is a refurbishment programme under way at the Riu group, but this one hasn't been done yet.
The Thomson rep Lorraine was very helpful and arranged a Levada(Referta)walk for me.it cost 23Euros.A minibus picked me up at the hotel and took us to the north of the island. You need a good head for heights on these walks.Because the "walkway" is only about 2 ft wide, you walk in single file and the guide stops now and then to explain things in 3 languages as there were English,French& Germans on the walk.On one side of the walkway there is the Levada( an irrigation channel) about the same width, and on the other side is a sheer drop. The views are amazing so don't forget your camera. Please don't wear sandals for this walk as a couple did on my walk, but trainers are fine.
A trip to Funchal is a must. The hotel runs a curtesy shuttle bus during the day.
Madeira is a beautiful, hilly and unspoiled island. As you travel around the island you will see low rise houses built into the hillsides, all with terracotta roof tiles. If you want to go clubbing or bar crawling, don't come here.
We usually like to travel to different places, but Madeira is the first that we want to come back to.
Tip..get the online price from the Thomson website and take it to a travel agent and get them to match it.They don't all do it,but some do.At least you will have a contact if there are any problems, rather than trying to talk to a cyber-person.
Nearly forgot to mention that the hotel showed all the World Cup games from Brazil.

Room Tip: We had room 1754 on the top floor.Would recommend it.

We have just returned from a wonderful two weeks at the Riu Palace. The flights were excellent we even arrived early. A short transfer and check in. This took a while as there was a long queue (45 mins) but a glass or two of Maderia helped. We had room which had a large balcony with excellent views of the sea and pool. The room was comfortable although the beds were very hard, we asked for toppers and then toppers for the toppers which were quickly forthcoming. The room was well cleaned and towels and sheets were changed regularly.

The food was of excellent quality although there was not the wide range of choice that we have had at other Riu's any one would be hard pressed to starve. We chose the 6:30 sitting although it is not compulsory to turn up then, some people were still turning up at 7:15. Our main waiter was Edgar who was excellent.

There are plenty of sun beds I am an early bird so had my choice at 7:30 and I did see the pool attendant move towels when people were looking for beds later in the day. There were some children whe were very well behaved.

We did none of the trips, in fact we did not leave the hotel and we did not see any of the entertainment so I cannot comment on that.

Every afternoon there was a Harris Hawk flying around called Betty part of the Hawk show in Funchal sadly Betty went AWOL on the last evening so if any one has any news we would love to know is she was re united with the handler.

All in all a perfect holiday and a venue high on our list for next year although maybe a fortnight later.

We have just returned from a week's holiday at The Riu Palace Hotel, Madeira and could not fault it in any way. The rooms are spacious and clean with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space cleaned thoroughly daily by our very efficient maid. Food is first rate; excellent variety and cooked to the highest standard for all meals. Bar service was again incomparable. Fast friendly service and a good choice of drinks. Reception staff, again, were friendly and knowledgable. To top all of this, the Thomson rep, Lorraine, was the best holiday rep we have ever come across.
One superb holiday thanks to everyone at the hotel. See you next year!

Room Tip: Go for high floor with sea view.

We have just returned from a week at the Riu Palace and you really cannot fault this hotel. We arrived on Monday lunchtime which is the busy day for change-overs and check-in was efficient with a glass of Madeira wine being offered while we waited and we were in our room within 10 minutes. The staff are really very friendly and happy to help you with any query. We went all inclusive and were impressed with the free use of the safe deposit box and complementary bottled water in rooms. The dinning room is busy but we asked for a table for two when we checked in and had a great table in the quieter annex dining area. There was a good variety of food at all meals and the waiters were very good at checking if you wanted more drinks - which is something we've not experienced in all inclusive hotels before. We would recommend booking to eat in the Brazilian themed restaurant as well - this takes place in the pool bar in the evening and the food was fantastic and it was lovely to be served at the table - again the service was excellent. We would agree with other reviewers regarding the location of the hotel it is in a very quiet area with not a great deal within walking distance but we did know this before we booked. The position of the hotel overlooking the sea is gorgeous and listening to the waves crashing in as you lay on the sunbed is very relaxing. There were plenty of sunbeds available but many of the ones with a "sea view" were reserved by about 8.30am so we joined in and put out towels out before going into breakfast. We made use of the free courtesy bus into Funchal and had a trip on the cable car up to the Monte Palace gardens which is well worth it. The only downside we would say was the evening entertainment which could have been a little more "entertaining" the first night we were there it was a parrot show! But that said we quite happily spent the nights in the lobby bar enjoying the cocktails and watching the World Cup football matches. This was the first time we had booked a RIU Hotel and based on our experience we will definitely be booking another one. Thank you for a super holiday.

One week at Riu - hotel good, although bedrooms would benefit from an upgrade, food satisfactory to good. Felt that the hotel was a little way out the bus taking 30mins+ to Funchal. I think perhaps the roadworks in Funchal and the windy weather may have coloured our view of the holiday.

We recently returned from Madeira after a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. It was the first visit for us and we were not disappointed. We researched the hotel and the country before we chose this holiday and everything lived up to our expectations. As Riu members we have stayed in quite a few Riu hotels in different countries and we truly feel this has been one of the best.

The staff at all times were very friendly and helpful. The Thomson rep Lorraine gave a very comprehensive welcome meeting and was always in the hotel in the evening. She is one of the best reps we have had during all our holidays.

We stayed in room 1477 which was very spacious and kept very clean at all times. The view from our window overlooked the adjacent hotel but also gave us a view of the sea and the hills in
front of the hotel. As we like to keep our window open at night it did get a little noisy for us early mornings. It wasn't bad enough though to ask for a room change. As mentioned in other reviews the bed was very hard but I found out that all you have to do is tell reception and they will arrange for a mattress topper which makes it much more comfortable. The problem with the in-room safe being situated in the bottom of the wardrobe on the other hand wasn't so easy to resolve. I did query why it was in such an awkward position and the manager explained that it was how the hotel was built and there was not much they could do about it.

Our reason for this holiday was to have primarily a relaxing time so we only did one tour, the half day visit to the Nuns Valley etc which was well worth the trip. It was just enough to give us a taste of the culture, history and island. We also used the courtesy bus to Funchal a couple of times which was very convenient. We spent the rest of the time around the pool. We nearly always managed to get a sunbed in a good position even though we never made any special effort ie marked our spot with towels before breakfast like many guests did.

The food was excellent. There was always plenty of variety to choose from and we never had the same thing twice. The omelettes were my favourite for breakfast.
The bar service was always excellent with a good choice of drinks. The cocktails were particularly good and I made a point of working my way through the list during our week there.

The evening entertainment was always well attended so I guess most guests found it enjoyable. We always missed the first part because we dined at 8.30 but it was a pleasant way to relax after dinner with an after dinner drink

We didn't use the gym although perhaps we should have done after all the good food, and we didn't use the spa services but they looked very tempting.

We will most definitely return to this hotel some time, maybe next year if we can. For a relaxing stay, good food, good drinks and friendly atmosphere you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: The higher the room the better.

Just returned from a very Pleasant week in Madeira. Overall we were well looked after, the staff all spoke excellent English as well as many other languages. The food was buffet style but well organised and on the whole plenty of choice and well cooked. We were on All inclusive and the wine and other drinks were excellent. Very little off the drinks menue.
Beds are a very personal thing but I found them too hard and I hate the average continental pillow. The room was well looked after and cleaned daily.
The outside pools are climate heated so fairly cold at this time of year. The inside pool was a bit warmer.
The entertainment was pretty good for an hotel and it being World Cup time there was plenty of TV coverage with a chart showing all the results, future matches and on which TVs they could be viewed on.
Check in was a bit slow but when you got to the counter they were very pleasant.
We went on one half day trip to the Middle of Madeira and the Nuns valley. Beautiful scenery. Unfortunately the guide did not count heads on the way back and left a couple behind. Unforgivable.
Madeira is not for those looking for wild night life which suits us.

Room Tip: We had a limited sea view and that was fine.
