RIU PALACE HOTEL _ CANICO

We stayed 24th Feb - 10th March 2014. A very nice hotel with a lovely comfortable feel. Decorated and furnished in a style that I would describe perhaps as old colonial. Dark wood, chandeliers, plush seating etc.
Rooms are large, comfortable and spotlessly clean with a large bathroom.
The showers are ‘in bath’ style. Shower gel is provided and there is an efficient hair dryer in the bathroom.
There is no tea/coffee making facility in the rooms so I advise taking a travel kettle if you like a coffee before you shower and dress in the morning or if you like to sit on the balcony and read (some times of day the coffee/tea available through AI can be a long way from the room and would be cold before you got back with it).
I found the beds incredibly hard but, when asked, reception provided a mattress topper which helped a bit.
Almost all hotels nowadays have the “towels in bath” policy if you want them changed - BUT - be aware that this hotel now also has a “Card on Bed” policy for changing the sheets. We were not made aware of this (we only found out through a conversation with a fellow guest) and there was no card in the room so we had to ask at reception.
The large restaurant is, again, clean and very comfortable. The restaurant staff are brilliant. Friendly and efficient and you are made to feel as if you are a guest in someone’s house. Food (all buffet style) was of a good standard but after a week we found the lunchtime menu repetitive - however we always managed to ‘make a meal up’ from what was on offer. There are two sittings for dinner - 6 and 8. Your table is allocated for dinner but for breakfast and lunch you sit where you please. Afternoon tea of sandwiches and cakes is also served at the pool bar.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that there is a show lounge for evening entertainment. The in house group play for dancing, then a show of about half an hour from 9:30pm - VERY varied - parrot show, local traditional dance group, magician, large group of singers from the university, traditional Portuguese singer etc. And the animation team dance shows were very good, they are a talented bunch. This is followed again by the in house group.
The two outdoor pools - one heated, one not - and the surrounding areas were spotlessly clean. We found no problem whatsoever in getting sun-beds wherever we wanted them. Waiters come round regularly to cater for your every need. There are also many daily activities such as boules, tai chi, table tennis etc. if you want to join in.
The bar staff, both inside and around the pool are very good and the selection of drinks available is large and of good quality.
Plenty of organised trips on offer - but we took a local taxi for the day (120 euro) and toured the northern part of the island. The advantage of this is that the taxis can get to areas the coaches can’t. Out at 9 back at 5 with all the information you could handle (thank you Fidelio!).
So, all in all, a very nice hotel. The only drawback we found was that it is located a little too far from anything for convenience but there is a free shuttle bus about 5 times a day and the local bus stop is just across the road. That said - we would return without hesitation.

Room Tip: I think all rooms have a sea view to some extent. But choose a higher floor and a room facing towar...

We stayed here over Christmas 2013 and couldn't find fault with the hotel, staff or services. We went with Thomson on an all-inclusive package deal and were very pleased with the range quality of food and drink that was included - there were many branded drinks and cocktails which were included. It was possible to book for a separate restaurant for one evening and although the food was excellent, the separate restaurant and lack of covers was a bit soulless.
The food was normally always buffet style and you are given a sitting (6pm or 8pm) and table number for the evening meal but can sit where you like and go when you like within the time frames for breakfast and lunch. We were impressed with the evening meal selection and if you are on the later sitting, all the food is changed and fresh (in line with food not being left out for over 2 hours rules we assumed) so there is no difference in availability or quality.
The hotel is in a quiet area approx. 20 minutes by bus (depending on the driver!!) from Funchal, You can have a short walk along the front promanade to view the seashore, although no beach -if you are into underwater action we found three such outlets along this shore, we did see persons emerging from the sea with full wetsuits but it did appear quite rough during the Xmas period. One of tours ( free) organised by Thompsons was a slow walk around Funchal old district well worth the effort if you have not been to Funchal, before very enjoyable. We also took the tour up the cable car to see the gardens (a paid for tour) again along with the sledge ride down, not as scary as it sounds but I am sure it would be much cheaper if you organised it all yourself.
There is a free hotel shuttle bus from the Hotel to Funchal.

We didn't see the maid but the room was always clean when we returned after our activities for the day.

Views from balcony are are either towards sea or over pool area and beyond to the sea,

Rooms were reasonably large, old fashioned Portugese style of heavy wooden furniture.
.
All the staff were excellent, very friendly and prepared to have a chat with you (within reason, they do have a job to do after all) In short, we had a great holiday and couldn't fault the hotel, the airport or the island of Madeira which was extremely clean with well laid out infrastructure..This was our first visit to Madeira.

Stayed December 2013,

Room Tip: Obviously the higher levels have better views but whether it was side view to the sea or over the po...

We have just returned from a 2 week All Inclusive stay at this hotel, and must say we agree with most of the previous comments, staff were extremely friendly and service at all of the bars was excellent. Food in the restaurant was very good for buffet style eating, plenty of variety of vegetables and fresh salads. Dare I say something for everyone!
Location of hotel is not ideal if you have restricted mobility as apart from a small section of flat ground at the shoreside, it is all hills!
Very pleasant stay.

This is the best all inclusive hotel we have ever stayed in. Food and drink could not be faulted. The place is spotless and the staff brilliant. Got a fantastic deal through Thomson which I think you would only get about this time (January) We were given a glass of Madeira on arrival and a bottle of champagne was delivered to our room on my wife's birthday. All the restaurant staff came to the table to sing happy birthday to my wife at dinner which was a nice touch. There is a good free bus service from the hotel into town. Coupled with the fact that this is a fantastic destination we will be back very soon.

Our holiday began with a nice glass of Madeira wine at reception. Every member of staff at this hotel has to be commended for their friendliness, and super efficiency. Nothing was too much trouble. I found the bed to be too hard so I had two mattress toppers provided and an extra pillow. It was really quiet at night with no traffic noise. Everywhere is so spotlessly clean. We were All inclusive which worked out well as all drinks were included and most were well known brands. The food in the restaurant was really tasty and varied each day. Thanks to Johnny our waiter who made our evening meals so special. The pool bar had an alternative dining experience which had to be booked in advance and started at 7 p.m. We didn't try as it felt like you were in an extension to the outdoor pools with the same blue and white tiles repeated on the walls. The metal chairs and tables were ok if you were having a drink or a light snack in the afternoon but not very comfortable for dinner guests at night. Quite a chilly ambience we felt.

There are two outdoor pools, one of which is heated the other is 20 degrees cooler. There is an indoor pool, sauna, table tennis, darts, French boules, tennis, Tai Chi, and various other activities which take place every day. There is a variety of evening entertainment. The lounge bar is a comfortable seating area where guests can enjoy light conversation. Between 7 and 8 p.m. a musician playing a saxophone and a pianist start their repertoire. Their music is excellent but too loud. As a result the noise level rises as everyone has to shout to be heard. Perhaps a quiet lounge somewhere else is needed?

Take your own hair dryer as the one in the bathroom couldn't blow the skin off a rice pudding.

We relied on the shuttle bus and local bus service through our first week but it was so much better when we hired a car for the second week which allowed us to visit most of the island without having to depend on bus timetables. Got a good deal from Eurocar in Funchal.

Disappointed with the following -

Shuttle bus times to and from hotel to Funchal need to be increased. There is no bus to Funchal after the 11.30 departure until 3p.m. Last bus back from Funchal is at 5 p.m.

Extremely poor wifi reception for such an excellently rated hotel. The free wifi in reception is only for 60 minutes a day. Once logged in your time starts and if you have only been on 5 minutes and log off again the clock continues to tick and your time will have run out at the end of the hour session. We used one iPad in the morning and shared it to check our emails and again in the evening used the other one similarly. You could pay for extra time but only certain rooms/areas had this facility.

BBC1/2 no longer available as the satellite has been moved?? True movies channels (2) are also available but they become tiresome fairly quickly.

You can catch the 155 service bus from outside the hotel or take a taxi which, if you haggle , costs 10 euros. Slightly harder to get anything less than 15 euros back tho they do ask for 20 euros to begin with.

Some people have complained about all the work being done to improve the seafront at Funchal but we did not find it an inconvenience. It is supposed to be finished by the end of March and it will greatly improve the area once completed.

Room Tip: Try for a room on the west wing in early part of the year. Sun in the room in the afternoon and sea...

Lovely staff,so friendly and obliging.Excellent food. Only paid for half board which was £100 p.p.less than all inc. option. This workedfor us as we were out around the island every day also I can't drink.A Glass of red wine and a bottle of fizzy water came to 5.70 each night at Dinner. If you both like a drink then A.I. Isfor you.
Hotel is 12 km out of Funchal but motorways and tunnels make it a fast connection. Service bus every hour and a free shuttle bus makes it easy to get in and out of the city. However you are isolated there in the Evening as only a couple of bars near enough to walk to. Entertainment was ok and late dinner at 8 and the entertainment worked for us after we had been out all day. Hired a car for 3 days also went on escorted Levada walks. All firms pick up from the hotel so that was not a problem. needed a matress topperx2 as the beds were very hard but then slept well all week.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor near the front

We have stayed in some lovely hotels during the last few years and we always relate back to the Amara Wing, Kemer, Turkey being the best but we have found a challenger.
Riu Palace was all we hoped it would be for a winter break.
Hotel was large and spacious, ditto for the room. Everything about the hotel was spotlessly clean.
Food was five star with large choice for each meal. Smoked Salmon and Bucks Fizz for breakfast, lovely.
The bar area was very good with waiter/waitress service, never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be served. Lots of the drinks were branded, not local makes like many all inclusive hotels serve.
Although the hotel is some way from the capital a courtesy bus, free of charge runs on a regular basis from the hotel to the capital. The public transport is also good and one can get to any part of the island very cheaply.
The one thing I haven't mentioned yet are the staff, from booking in to booking out the staff ensure you have a good holiday, they just can't do enough for you, lovely, lovely people.
We will definately be returning to this hotel, looking at about May 2015 when more of the flowers are in bloom.
Thank you Riu Palace and thank you for the bottle of champa's for my birthday.

Room Tip: Ask for a side sea view high up on the left wing where you will get the sun in the afternoon
