“Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2012

Just returned from the Dom Pedro Garajau. So disappointed on arrival to find that we (myself and my parents, both in their 70's and with walking sticks) had a long, hot, uphill walk to the 3rd block and then up 3 floors with all our luggage to reach our rooms! The hotel itself is fine. Rooms cleaned every day, outdoor pool quiet & kept clean, and staff pleasant and helpful. BUT the layout of the hotel was so spread out and the breakfast so limited for choices (basically if you don't like cheese, ham, tomatoes, bread and jam for your breakfast, your stuffed!!), that after the first morning I did not bother to go down to eat for the rest of the week. Luckily, there is a lovely fruit & veg shop and bakery across the road, so we had DIY brunches by the pool each day. Outdoor pool bar wasn't open all the time we were there which was very frustrating but there are some lovely restaurants & cafes opposite the hotel for lunches/evening meals.
Wouldn't recommend or go back. Although I realise that a lot of holiday destinations have the same problem, the barking dogs and the fact that there was no air conditioning in the rooms meant that not much sleep was possible at night. Real shame.

Room Tip: If you have any mobility issues, Madeira might not be for you........very hilly. The hotel is spread...

The Dom Pedro Garajau is a decent hotel. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast is poor and very boring, but there is a choice of places to go to across the street.
For the week we stayed at the hotel the barking and howling dogs kept us awake for most of the night. We did comment on this and the staff were willing to give us another room but we did not think that would make any difference since most rooms are facing the same direction. We were hoping for the best but the concert of barks, howls and japs continued every night, all night, coming from all directions.....The only way to get any sleep was to close the balcony doors, not great when the outside temperature is 22C at night.
How anybody in Garajau gets any sleep is a mystery to us......

We stayed at the Dom Pedro at the end of May and were more than pleased with the Hotel, lovely room with a lovely view.
Breakfast was very simple but nice and excellent value.

Excellent price in a nice location. (it's always needed a car to go around in madeira! although there is a bus stop in the front of the hotel)
It's a good price to have the basic: clean room, nice bed, silence to sleep. You can't ask anything else when your objective is to spend little money in accomodation and be all the day around.
The only thing that i didn't like, it's that we only have 2 entries for electronic devices in all the room!! The bathroom doesn't have (forget shaving with a machine!), have one for the TV and one hidden behind the bed.. so with a bit of imagination you can manage! lol

A stunningly beautiful island marred by a week of storms and rain. The food was acceptable, bar staff friendly and accomodating, close to the bus stop for visits to Funchal. Downside is the hotel is in a number of blocks and it can be a fair hike up to your room from the restaurant and bar.

Booked this 2weeks before we left so weren't expecting the ritz, but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Room was lovely and large. We had no air conditioning but the balcony was secure so it was left open, keeping the room nice and cool. All rooms had a view of the pool/sea/ local area/landscaped gardens - no noisy traffic here. Hotel was on a quiet little road withs view shops, cafes and restaurants - notably a lovely pizza place. However there wasn't much else in the area other than a cable car to the beach. Which was quite fun and pretty cheap. Funchal was a bus ride away and the buses were very regular (except on a Sunday when we had to give up and get a taxi). Breakfast was standard and included in the price, nothing exciting but was okay for a free meal.

In summary: lovely hotel and pool in a quiet location. Bit quiet for us but probably lovely for an older couple.

Not small room, excellent seaside view. Not modern bathroom equipment, also too dark in the bathroom. Unfortunately cold tile floor. Archaistic room key without blocks - in the morning chambermaid can open your door and ask you something. Good cafe and restaraunts in front of hotel. Not enough information how to reach hotel by car (i wasted about one hour to find a road in Garajau). No hotel parking. In-room safe by default doesn't work. Archaistic TV in the room.

Room Tip: Choose only seaside view room. Garden view is located on ground floor.
