2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2012

stayed here about two years ago. Short break - could see that things had been different about 20 years previously. Bit Fawlty Towers - unusual and querky in parts, indoor swimming pool in reception, felt like the titanic - rooms dark and old woody looking, lots of walking to get anywhere, had a family feel about the place though staff could be quite remote. Had a short stay. My husband didn't care too much for the place as he got vertigo from being high up and far reaching from the sea/coast line. Lots of French elderly trekkers in residence at times. Very handy for Funchal expensive small restaurants surrounding.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Don Pedro because it is a very pleasant hotel, representing good value for money, and is in convenient location for touring Madeira. This time, as before, we had an excellent sea view room, which was kept spotlessly clean by the hotel staff. The continental breakfast was adequate with some very tasty freshly baked bread and fresh fruit but could be improved by providing breakfast cereals. The hotel no longer provides evening meals but operates a half board "dine around" system where you are provided with vouchers for a 3 course dinner to use in a choice of 3 local restaurants. We found this worked very well and would particularly recommend the Frango da Guia restaurant. The hotel reception staff were particularly friendly and helpful - we certainly intend to stay again.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the best sea views. Some rooms have kitchenettes.

Hotel is very tired and old. It's Spotlessly clean with a nice pool area. Breakfast is very repetitive but good quality ingredients, mainly bread and cheese. Cheap and easy on the bus to Funchal. nice restaurants in resort. Small and quiet area - not many shops.
It may pay to spend a little more and be in Funchal.

Very good price / quality. Excellent location, have banks, bars and restaurants just in front and garajau beach very near.
Enjoy

Room Tip: they are the same standard just need to choose sea view if you prefer.

We booked this holiday through Atlantic Holidays with a brochure price of £599.00.
The Restaurants are closed down the breakfasts are terrible. There is no pool bar, or live entertainment. The rooms are cramped and small and our balcony doors were rotten.

It had an atmosphere similar the the Marie So lest- Dead!
The walk in rate for this hotel is 20 Euros a night! =£19.20 per couple and as such is used by many seasonal workers on the Island as a Hostel.

With a substantial investment this Hotel could regain the 3 *s.

Avoid this hotel unless you want to stay in a poor quality YMCA.

when we arrived we were given our keys and given very vague directions to the room, which we eventually found 100 yards up the road, after hauling our cases up 3 flights of stairs we got into a room that was not suitable for myself and 2 teenagers.i had requested a seperate bedroom, but all beds were in one room..(.i was travelling with my daughter and her boyfriend)
i went down to reception to ask to move to a room with a seperate room or at least one that had a fridge(my room didnt and also didnt have aircon either but did have a radiator really!!)
reception told me they didnt have a room to sleep 3 with a seperate bedroom, they also told me that the rooms with kitchenettes only sleep 2.i asked how much for an extra room to which i was told 340 euros..we didnt do that as i had already paid for the hotel and really didnt see why i should have to..

the dom pedro website is completely untrue, they dont have apartments with rooms and they are not an all inclusive hotel, apparently they used to be but the reastaurant is now closed..as was the pool bar during our stay..

i had money stolen form the room 6 days into the holiday, and they called the police but they werent very helpful at all,we had 100 euros and 10 pounds taken,i was told that if the monetary value is higher that 102 euro you have to go to court to get the report which takes 4 weeks,if it is under that amount the police can do a report in less than a week,so of course dont get more than 102 euros stolen whilst on holiday in madeira as u wont be able to get the report because you will already be back home.
had to travel into santa cruz to the police station to get the report myself and even had to pay for it!!

very expensive at the bar in the breakfast restaurant 2.20 euro for a bottle of coral beer,go across the road to the fruit an veg shop an get 6 of the same beer for 2.78 euro.

all in all we made the best of our holiday....i would go back to madiera again but would not stay here.

they really need to do something about the place its so under used and must be losing money.
staff are at best polite but not really that helpful(customer service needs improving)

restaurants and shops opposite are lovely..some people are just plain rude and you wouldnt think that they need you to eat an drink in there restaurants to keep them in a living.
also one last thing we stayed in room 4308 and sleep quality was appauling apart from the dogs barking the hotel have a sprinkler system which comes on early hours of every morning, and they are very loud when u have to have your doors open due to no air con.
