“A happy tummy with a small bill”
Reviewed April 19, 2012

Dining at A Central in Canico is so pleasant, almost as if you're going to a friend's place for a meal. The service is friendly, the food unpretentious and you will leave with a full tummy and surprised with the small bill.

I visit Madeira often and this place is always a must, the big attraction is the combination of Portuguese and Brazilian dishes and the lovely wine.

The portions are large so be smart as you can over order.
Picanha is a delicious dish and a must try, you get your vegetables and rice and as much meat as you wish, it is a meat lover's place, would not recommend it to vegetarians.

A Central is located in the Canico Centro, a small town between Funchal and Santa Cruz and the restaurant is on the right next to the church, not hard to find, although you might feel as you're entering a local's house. In the evening is easier to park.

This restaurant is mainly visited by the locals but don't be shy and say hello and you will feel immediately the warmth of its visitors and it's staff.

Enjoy

“Brazilian Rodizio in Madeira!”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

If you've not experienced a Rodizio Brasileiro before, try A Central in Canico Centro. The restaurant is easy to find being on the main street to the right of the church. Buses from Funchal are frequent and cheap! Get off at the Centro terminus and walk across the town square.
The Rodizio (mini or grande) is the thing to do. After the regular Madeiran garlic bread you will be served a variety of barbecue-grilled meats brought to the table on long skewers and the waiter will offer you a slice or two of each - cooked to your preference. The meats range from sausage, chiken, different cuts of pork, turkey rolls with ham, filet mignon to the Brazilians' favourite cut of beef "Picanha". All delicious. Accompaniments include black beans, rice, cabbage with herbs and spices and farofa (toasted cassava flour with bacon). You don't need the chips. Good house wine available by the glass, draught beer and don't forget to have a caipirinha to start if you're not driving!!
Very pleasant and helpful staff - some English spoken if required.
Great value (mini Rodizio only Euros 11.50). Worth the 30min bus trip from Funchal - even better if you're in Canico Baixo.
