“Lovely Place in Breathtaking Countryside”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

We stayed 2 nights on a touring trip to Portugal. It's a lovely old convent and we had a large room with a huge balcony. The dining room and other communal areas were beautiful. The weather was poor so we could not do much walking and it's quite an isolated village.

The staff were really helpful and the food was good if a bit heavy (traditional regional food). We would certainly return.

We had a short but perfect stay in this former abby. It is really beautiful. Even the ancient chapel was accessable. Friendly staff, very nice restaurant, nice suite with spacious balcony, which had an impressive view of the hillside. Very nice swimming pool (large, nice view, quiet) between the olive trees and the grapes. We should have stayed longer!

Part of a group. Attractive restored interior. Staff very helpful and attentive. Immaculate in cleanliness. Chapel within hotel held Sunday service for local residents. Buffet style food: breakfast 9/10, dinner 8/10. As this hotel is in a very rural setting, if weather is cold or wet, might be unsuitable for children. A place to relax, read books and sit by the cosy fire that was on when we visited in Oct/Nov 2013.

At the Pousada for three nights as part of a tour of Portugal, we had a room that was huge, even with a separate lounge (totally unexpected!) Packed with character, and staff who go the extra mile for you, we really didn't have enough time to properly explore the hotel or the surrounding area. We were there mid-September, just before grape harvesting, so were able to sample the various varieties straight from the vines in the hotel grounds. Meals were all extremely good. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony - they're big!

The Pousada is really gorgeous. Its a beautifully redone convent in the tiny village of Vila Pouca da Biera in the Dao wine region...luxurious but understated. The rooms, the common areas...everything is done so so nicely. You will not want to leave. It was easily our favorite hotel in a month of travel.

We had one of the large suites with a huge terrace with a view overlooking the pool, mountains and vineyards. The service and food were excellent....the staff happy to respond to any request quickly and with a smile. The pool was great and the pool-side drink/lunch service was fast and good.

This is a place you should not miss...its a real gem. For side trips, I recommend the village of Avo and a drive to Viesu...a wonderful larger city that is the center of the Dao wine region.

Room Tip: The larger suites have huge terraces with stunning views.

Beautiful place, excellent service, helpful without being obtrusive, a brilliant place for a restful holiday in an interesting scenic area, a relaxing stop on a tour, or a group retreat. We came at first as a stop on the way back to the airport, and just had to come back for longer. It was worth it.

Room Tip: We have been before, met many people, and have never heard any negative comments about any rooms.

We stayed at the Pousada on the last night of a wonderful Portugal vacation, and it was a very good way to finish up. Perhaps due to the weather (cold and rainy) or the time of year ( early May) we almost had the place to ourselves, which made it a little spooky. But the service was good to excellent, the rooms were grand and our dinner was superb. Heartily recommended!
