“Remember, it's only a three star hotel.”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

We booked a week in the middle of December in order for us to celebrate two events.
The hotel was clean. The food, although not wonderful, was good. There was a choice of either their meal of the day (3 course for 7.50 euros), or snacks, which were a bit more than a snack and a good range of dishes. The staff were okay and mostly friendly, although we did notice that not many people in Portugal wear a smile very easily.
The service could be a little slow, because of a staffing issue.
The bar prices were good. Port/Madeira 3 euros; beer 2 euros for a half litre(which they call a pint), etc.
As we were there just before Christmas, we expected it to be quiet, which it was, until the last couple of days, when a fair number of Brits turned up for their Christmas break.
The area in which the hotel is situated is a little run down, and what looked like very expensive villas, have been squeezed-in by apartments, and are guarded by dogs, which do bark when it gets dark, but are quiet during the night.
The walk to the beach was okay, and from there to the marina at Vilamoura and/or the prom at Quarteira, were an easy and pleasant walk. The walk into Town and/or Vilamoura along the roads was maybe 15 to 20 mins.
Overall, if you want a clean, Ibis type of hotel, then this one is ideal. The only difference was that there were no drinks facilities in the room.
Overall, I would say that you get what you pay for. It is a clean 3 star hotel.
We would not go back, only because we don't repeat holidays. If we did, then we probably would think about this hotel again.

Room Tip: Small hotel. Do not take a room on the ground floor.

Finding the hotel after dark was difficult, even with help of locals. Recomend use of GPS.
Staff at check-in very helpful, big and confortable room with balcony where you can smoke (is very difficult to find a hotel with rooms for smokers, so this is your only option).
Central heating on.
The bed covers were old and needed sowing, bath towels extremely old (almost ripping apart), I suppose is part of the low season standard.
Breakfast was very good, with buffet of hot and cold for several cultures/likes, fruit and yougurts.
Only down in breakfast was the instant coffee and juice.
Staff at check-out less helpful. Printer was out, so I asked for teh receipt to be sent to me by email. I am still waiting.
All in all, for the extreme bargain it was, acceptable.

the rooms clean perfectly, bedding changed every other day with towels ,the food was varied and perfectly cooked, the few staff could not do enough for you ,(mafalda was unbelievable she did so much and always had a smile on her face) the hotel position is the best midway between the marina and the old town , we were there for two weeks and loved each and every minute and we will be back . We have been traveling for 50 years and we have been to quite a few places but this is in the top 5
its a 10 star hotel for a 2 star price WELL DONE ALL THE STAFF OF THE PRAIA SOL XXXX

Just came back from a three night break at this hotel, first time in Portugal, so nothing to compare it to in the area. However we had a very comfortable stay, bedroom wasn't massive, but adequate, beds very comfy, balcony overlooked a private villa which was shut up for the winter, we pretty much had the sun there all day! Breakfast was minimal but sufficient! Staff were friendly.
Yes there are dogs roaming the street and yes dogs do bark, but in a way I found this comforting as a dog lover! They were quiet at night which was what mattered to us. We did wander around the area and went to the marina and fishing ports, both very lovely in there own way! I would say though, I think the hotel is more suited to adults than kids, if I were to go back to this area with kids I would probably stay in the crown plaza!

Stayed here for 11 nights this year, in early October, this was our third stay at this Hotel, my last review was entitled "Good Hotel" I'm afraid that is not the case any more.
There have been cut backs on the Breakfast, no bacon available at any time now, we had lunches now and again that were Ok, until I was presented with a mixed salad that I wouldn't have given to a Rabbit, half the lettuce was brown at the edges along with small holes in it and I'll leave the rest to your imagination, the sliced tomato was ready for the bin and the cucumber wasn't much better,(wish I'd taken a photo of it now) I took it back with my complaint stating "I do not want it" a few minutes later I was presented with another mixed salad of which the lettuce and tomato had been changed, but, the cucumber was the same, needless to say I refused to pay for it, my stomach was turned after receiving the first one and I was expected to eat the second, I don't think so!!!
The second and last time we had an evening meal there, I ended up with a slight case of food poisoning.
Broken sun beds/parasols left around the pool area.
Shelves in the stairwell and windowsills in the dining area had not been cleaned for a long time.
I know the staff work hard, on the whole,as they have to mulitask in this Hotel, which I commend the majority for, however, two of the staff wouldn't even make eye contact and didn't display any manners, maybe they should find a job elsewhere that doesn't entail working at front of house. Management take note, you are not doing yourself or your customers justice.
We paid for a service we did not receive!!
NOT recommended in any shape or form!
Needless to say we will not be back!!!!!

2nd time here, perfect location for Vilamoura and Quarteria. Noticed on other reviews grumbles about staff shortages, yes lack of at times but willing to help all the time. Re breakfast as per my last review it's what you make of it how much do you eat for breakfast at home? (I saw one guy with 4 sausages on his plate and plenty of others having everything available). Rooms cleaned every day except Sunday and if you left your towels in the bath they were changed. Air conditioning is good as it was very hot during our stay. Cheapest hotel bar price for beer still 2 euro's. Very popular hotel it was full, and 90% I would say had stayed there before.

The reviews of this hotel make me smile... basically yes its a bit tired, yes its understaffed but its clean, comfortable and inexpensive. If you want luxury then pay for luxury. The location is excellent 5 minute walk from the marina Yes the back gate scenario can be laughable but it cuts 20 mins of the walk so worth a few seconds wait for it to be opened. The staff are friendly, work so hard to maintain excellent customer service. They basically run the reception, bar , restaurant & clean the rooms and I think there was only 4 of them so all in all the service was fine. Breakfast was fine, good choice of cereal, breads fruit etc.
I would say its good value for money and if you want 5 star service then pay 5 star prices a few minutes walk down the road. I would stay again for a bargain break.
I did hear a few dogs in the local houses but i think the key is to get a non pool facing room as I didint hear any from our room which was on the other side.
I would also recommend Columbus restaurant just at at the back of the hotel, excellent service, waiters really knowledgeable and excellent for sea food....

Room Tip: Rooms on the non pool side - maybe quieter as not facing local houses or scate park
