“Unfriendly to families”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

We arrived at the Atismar late at night early Feb 2013. We were 'greeted' by an sulky looking receptionist. She immediately told us there had been a mix up with our booking and she didn't know if there was a cot for our toddler, even though we had specified this on the booking.
The bar man (one of the few decent members of staff there) helped my husband carry a cot to the room - it was a cot for a new born baby and we sent the whole 2 weeks concerned our toddler would throw themselves over the bars!
Finally we got to the room to find the balcony doors would not lock. We went back down to reception to be asked if we could wait to change rooms until the next day. We refused, bearing in mind what happened in Portugal in 2007 and not wanting to unpack twice. The next room we were offered also did not have locking balcony doors. The 3rd room we were shown had locking doors.
The next day, after a late night, we looked forward to the first day of our holiday. We went to breakfast only to be told that there are no high chairs, just a sling type device that fits to the table, that may be ok for babies for not toddlers. We argued our case to the manager (over the phone) for 2 days and our toddler had her meals in her bugy.
The food was appalling - no choice, and as it was left standing for a long time, it was often cold. The chef there only knows how to cook about 2 different types of puddings and breakfasts.
The cleaners often forgot to leave towels and toilet roll. To cap it off, we saw a cleaner wipe our toilet and then use the same cloth, without even rinsing it, around the sink and bedside cabinets!
My husband spoke at length to the hotel manager - he was fully aware about our concerns but had not once offered an apology or explanation.
The nicest thing I can say about the hotel is that there are 3 decent members of staff there (the rest are hopeless) and the location is good. But if you have a toddler, I wouldn't bother........

I went with my sister for a few days chilling. The hotel was perfect for this. I am really fussy about food but I have to say that I enjoyed every meal. There was always enough choice even though I don't eat meat. I think you have to remember how much you have paid for this all-inclusive holiday before knocking it. Amazing value for money. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms super clean, check in took no time at all. The hotel is a couple of minutes to a spotless beach, fab promenade with lots of bars and restaurants to choose from if you fancy a change. We had the rest we wanted in this hotel. We sunbathed by the pool and on the beach and got a tan even though it is February! I would definitely recommend the Atismar and have no doubts about returning for another holiday.

Having spent Christmas and New Year in this hotel I can report that it has the worst food I have ever had anywhere in the world! You can purchase cheap raw ingredients and still make them appetising and edible.........the hotel failed miserably to do this. The Christmas Day Dinner was exceptional............the meat was menu'd as Turkey. If that was turkey, I've been miss-employed as a Caterer for 50 years! Some even thought it was rabbit!!!! There seemed to be no formal food plan and the "Cook", (my apologies to all those excellent one's around the world), seemed to turn out the most bizarre "food" on a daily basis. This hotel is not worth half-board or all inclusive options.
The lift to the 11th floor was broke more than it was in service......the last 3 days it remained broke.
The one saving grace for this place were the staff, very good and friendly, especially Andrew behind the poorly stocked All Inclusive bar. Here's a guy with lots of potential to better himself in the hospitality industry and certainly too good for the Atismar Hotel.
The hotel offers no entertainment, not even a sound system with piped music. The place was like an undertakers waiting area.
The general seafront area of Quarteira is good and there are plenty of good places to eat and drink at very reasonable prices...............give them a try.

Most peoples's comments are on the food and to be fair, it was a bit unappetizing once you have had more than a you can chew from 3 meals a day (i.e. All-Inclusive) for long-staying guests (i.e. 5 days or more). There was a good selection of breads, salads and hot meals (including fish meals; e.g. squid), but after a while; it feels that they all taste the same. The cook tries to vary the variety, but if there is only one or two cooks and is limited as to his budget and supply, there is so much that he can do and for a three-star guests, there is so much that you should expect. I'm not going to criticise the food, but would say that there are plenty of opportunities to eat on the front (less than 5 minutes away) so I would go B&B next time and especially for long-stay guests.
The staff were friendly and very helpful and certainly made the hotel a pleasant experience.
For a future opportunity of staying at the hotel, I would use it as a base to just sleep in and not to 'holiday' as some people would perhaps envisage. Look at it as a 3-star Travelodge. Yes, it had a swimming pool, but it was closed and from what I could see, was small and regularly shaded from the sun by surrounding high-rise buildings. Certainly, it's not my sort of place for a sunbathing hotel.
There's not much to do at the hotel other than get pissed at the All-Inclusive bar (to 10pm) or sit in the lounge (certainly, nowhere outside). There was no New Year's Eve entertainment, but Quarteira did have a firework display (which we missed as it was raining), so you have to make your own entertainment and if you moan and groan about it; then go somewhere else.
Ok for a location if you are mobile. 10 mins to Quarteira centre; a pleasant half-hour to an hour stroll to Vilamoira. Easy buses to Albufeira and Faro (which we did).
Two things to note:- Not suitable for children of any age. Nothing for babies, toddlers, infants or teenagers. Also, not suitable for oversized fat people as the lifts (2 of which one was out of action a lot of the time) are small and narrow.

Room Tip: We were on 5th floof. View not very nice.

We have just come back (03.01.13) after a 7 day break at the hotel taking in the New Year.

Plus Points:-
All the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to help.
Booking in at the reception, went faultlessly and we were in our rooms in a very short period of time
The hotel is very clean and the rooms and surrounding areas are spotless, the maids even came to change the towels and bedding on New Year’s Day?
The bar (we were all inclusive) served up good beer and spirits, whilst there was an option to use the front bar for tea or coffee.
The location of the hotel is good, 2 mins from the beach and promenade, where there are many restaurants and bars to choose from and the whole area retains a certain charm

Not so good points:-
The food was not the best we had every eaten, although there was usually something to pick n pike at. Having said that, we ate out a lot of the time through choice.
We were there for seven days, including New Year and there wasn't a hint of any entertainment or Gala meal, it was crying out for something. The odd time it felt like a doctor’s surgery, it was that quite
The hotel is situated a street back from the beach adjacent to other high rise buildings, this meant the sun never got on the patio area and resulted in nearly all the residents heading for beach bars where they could take in the rays.

Quarteira itself holds a certain charm, still not too commercialised, but has all the amenities one could want. At the end of the main beach road there's a traditional fish market well worth a visit and another 15 min stroll you’re in Vilamoura, this is more commercialised but still a nice place to go and admire with envy the large yachts and millionaire lifestyle . Quarteira has a number of bars and restaurants to choose from, many of them being local cafes, but they owners are very friendly and accommodating. There's a large Brazilian population and boy can the party, try the bar just across the road it was banging to the samba beat day and night. We also frequented the Fantasia, D'Artagnan and the Cadillac bars all very good.
We ate out a lot, but one restaurant to keep well away from would be the Oceanos on the front. Four of us went in and ordered (3 of us wanting Pri Pri chicken), we was told all the Pri Pri had been sold and did we want anything else? We'd set our hearts on that dish so we had a drink and told the owner thanks but we were moving on. Suddenly before we went he said he had 2 portions left and would we stay. We agreed and our 3 member who missed out on the chicken opted for steak & eggs. After a long wait the meals came, omelette and the steak meals looked good, the 2 Pri Pri came, small bits of left overs that would have not amounted to one full portion, a total rip off?

Would I go back the Atismar, yes but we'd only use this as a base to explore the local area.
