“excellence!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2012

By far the most fantastic restaurant we came across in Italy. This was what I expected from Italian cuisine. I didn't know that simplicity can taste so good. Great service added to our excellent experience. It feels like you are walking into the home of an Italian family who invited you over for dinner and worth every penny we spent. The owners are adorable too. A must for all visitors to this splendid little town

“Fancy dishes, dull execution”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2012

Locanda dell'800 must mean well, but it's just not very good. Nearly all the dishes have a twist (roast yellow pepper spread with feta, chicken salad with citrus), but there's no genius in the variations, and the actual results were often mediocre. For instance, a spaghetti with what is described, essentially, as a sauce of caprese (fresh tomato, mozzarella, basil) is actually a generic cooked tomato puree sauce with little chunks of mozzarella that didn't melt and one sprig of basil planted on top. The personnel were friendly and helpful, and the tiny piazza off the main piazza is charming, but in the end, one eats out for the food. Restaurant cooking should be better than something you can throw together at home, but this was just like something you would concoct from the fridge absent the care you would bestow on those humble ingredients.

dear customer,
as much as i can understand your point of view, i could also say that simple basic cooking is the golden rule of italian cousine. i dont really know what you can expect from a dish that costs 6 euros and says spaghetti with tomato basil and buffalo mozzarella. that said i wish we had the confrontation of ideas at the table where you could have suggested how to improve my restaurant.

“Local cuisine prepared expertly by local couple.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2011

As owners of a home in the centro storico of Citta' di Castello, we have put our favorite restaurants to the test on many occasions. Locanda dell'800 is, indeed, a favorite. Located just off the large piazza in the middle of the walled city, we find it to be an convenient stop for after an evening walk. Look for their sign in the southwest corner of the piazza and follow the arrow to tiny a piazza and the restaurant entrance. Owners, Leo and Anna speak excellent English, serve traditional Umbrian cuisine with just a hint of international flare. They use only local produce and meats. All pastas are made in their kitchen and the wine list, though not extensive, is excellent and very reasonable. You can eat hearty or simply have a pizza from their wood burning oven.

“Excellent food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2011

My husband and I had lunch here on a quiet Friday afternoon. We are from Berkeley and are used to very good locally grown food. The chef here puts enormous attention into the ingredients and to the locally grown and available products. He had just changed the menu to an autumn menu. I had Carmella Rosa, which was light, and perfectly balanced. My husband had Ravioli di Cinghiale which he refused to share, a very good sign. The service was attentive and very courteous. I would highly recommend a stop here even if you are not staying in Citta di Castello. It is worth the drive.

“Lovely setting and wonderful food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2011

My wife and I went here for lunch during one of the recent hot spells. The location was perfect with outside seating under umbrellas further shaded by the surrounding buildings. The menu is not huge but offers a good variety of antipasti, primi, secondi and dolce courses. We can recommend the house antipasti, the goat cheese salad and the grilled steak with herbs. All were delightful. We also had the panna cotta and the tiramisu, which were among the best we've eaten anywhere. The service was excellent and the waitress graciously allowed us to order in Italian although her English is better than our Italian. As we were at the end of the lunch period, the chef, Leonardo, came out to check on us while the waitress went home and we had a great conversation with him, all in English as it turns out that his wife (Anna) is English. We most highly recommend this restaurant.
