Owner description: Visitors to this romantic estate have agreed the trip was well worth it: the family is warm and hospitable, the grounds are ruggedly romantic and the wines are impressive.

We toured Castello Di Verrazzano with three other couples and had a wonderful and educational time. If we were to return to Florence, we would return to this winery in a New York minute! Our host, Gillian, who is also a sommelier, was a delight. She picked us up at our hotel and gave us a fascinating lecture about Tuscany and the making of Chianti wine. The 500-acre castle estate, purchased in the year 700 , was breathtaking. The fact that it was the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the discoverer of New York Harbor and for whom the Verrazzano Bridge is named, made it even more special to this New Yorker. At the Castle we had a fabulous lunch and wine tasting with lots of unpretentious laughs. Gillian was our designated driver as she returned us to our hotel with a glow of appreciation for Italian wine and hospitality!

We visited back in October of 2012 and I am just getting to finishing my reviews of our trip to Italy. I only wrote a few reviews and now want to complete them all! Sorry this is so long over due!

This was my second trip to Castello di Verrezzano but my fiance's first trip to Italy and the winery. I loved my first visit to Castello di Verrezzano (in 2008) so much and raved so much about it to my fiancé that we had to return for a tour with GINO in 2012 when we were there in October.

I called Gino at the winery and asked if we could come that day and he said of course! So we took the public bus from Florence out to Grieve in Chianti and Gino picked us up down at their store by the road and took us up to the winery (it was down pouring rain that day so the ride was very much appreciated). We went on the tour of the winery with Gino (who has to be the best tour guide ever at a winery!) and after we had the lunch there too. Gino has to be the most fun, animated and knowledgable tour guide! We both loved his tour. The winery is pretty amazing! Then we went inside and had the tasting lunch. We sat with some people we didn't know which was fun since it was just 2 of us Gino sat us with 2 or 3 other couples. We had lunch with tasting of their wines and Gino explaining the wines we tasted. Let me just say that this may be the best meal I had in Italy! I'm torn between this lunch and a dinner we had in Milan as to which was the best but here is what you need to know.....the lunch is some of the very best food you will be served in Italy! Amazing! And the wines were excellent as well! We enjoyed all of them!

After the tour and lunch we wanted to taste a couple more wines that we hadn't tasted so Gino sampled what we wanted to taste and then we ordered a couple of cases of what we liked best! We are so happy we ordered the wines! The cases were delivered perfectly about 5 weeks later when we returned home and we have been savoring them ever since for special occasions or when we want to feel like we are back at Castello di Verrazzano!

Gino also gave us a ride back down to the bus stop so we didn't have to walk to catch the bus to Florence.

What a great day we had at Castello di Verrazzano! Do yourself a favor if you are in Italy....go to Castello di Verrazzano and have a tour with Gino of the winery and then stay for their lunch! You will love it!

We did not visit the castle, just the wine shop. And Roberta made the visit worth it. Knowledgeable and friendly, she made us taste wine, honey and balsamico for about an hour. A great little stop!

The day started with a tour of the wine estate; whilst learning about the history of winemaking at Castello di Verrazzano we got to enjoy the wonderful view over the tuscan landscape and see all the wine, oil and vinegar barrels, as well as a collection of old wine bottles. We then had the wine tasting that included 5 wines, Vino Santo and Grappa. We chose the “light” lunch option which offered a large platter with delicious cold meats, cheese, bruschetta and bread. To end the day we took a relaxed stroll through the vineyard. It was a truly wonderful experience that I would advise everyone who is in the region.

A wonderful day spent at Castello di Verrazzano with a vino tour and lunch. I highly recommend a visit when you are next in Chianti.
