“Center of town convenience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2011

The restaurant was full to the brim with only one waitress, but the service was excellent and the food was very good. We lucked out by sitting next to the sister of the waitress and she gave us other excellent restaurant recommendations in the area.

“Excellent and busy family run restaurant.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2011

We noted that this restaurant was full of locals, whereas other restaurants on the main Piazza were empty. We were shown to a table and served quickly.

The food was local Tuscan cuisine, tasty and excellent, as was the wine. The restaurant had a limited list of local specialities, however all of them were prepared well, presented hot and were extremely tasty.

“And the winner is: the Vitello Tonnato!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2011

Located on the Piazza Matteotti, the famous central square of Greve in Chianti, nearly oppositie the Albergo del Chianti hotel, this small restaurant is all what you would expect a small restaurant to be: friendly atmosphere, genuine good natured service, delicious yet unpretentious food, and real value for money.
The menu consists of typical Tuscan food with the obligatory Bruschette, Bistecca Fiorentina and such, while the housewine is the local Viticcio, lovely and not expensive. Apart from a set menu they change thes specials every week or so. One of these specials is the Vitello Tonato: absolutely fabulous!
The place is worth at least one try.

“Incredible Location; Even More Incredible Dining Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2011

It seems to be more and more rare each year to find restaurants that provide incredible service, outstanding food, and happen to also boast a premium location in their respective communities. As an experienced traveler who is fortunate to know my way around many locations in Italy, I almost exclusively adhere to the theory "When looking for great food, leave the restaurants in the main piazzas to those who just want a view and are willing to pay for it regardless of the quality"

Ristorante Il Portico defies that logic in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE! They have created a truly enjoyable dining experience by preparing outstanding food, presenting it with excellent service, and helping their guests enjoy it while taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling main piazza of Greve.

I have been to Il Portico 5 times over the last few years, and the quality has remained completely constant. Their entire menu is authentic and delicious, and their daily specials potentially even better! The "Chianti Penne" is a truly unique entree that is always the favorite, and the homemade panna cotta, if there is any left when you get there, is the perfect way to end the wonderful meal!

Whether visiting Greve, or just passing through on the Chiantigiana, make sure to find Ristorante Il Portico for the best dining experience in town!

“Avoid this one!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2011

We had an extremely disappointing experience. After heading for Gallo Nero which turned out to be closed, we selected this one on the piazza in Greve as we were all starving. The food, starting with the bread even, was just bad. Head here if you like tasteless overcooked pasta.
