Appartamenti Il Castagno
Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

The apartment is clean, efficient and wonderfully quiet. Compared to the crush of people throughout Tuscany, the Becattini family has provided a lovely retreat out of the way yet close enough to visit all of the sites on your list. Great value, hospitable hosts, and outstanding views make these apartments 5 stars.

We just returned from staying here in apartment Il Cipresso. I agree with all of the other wonderful reviews about how welcoming and loving the Becattini family are. The apartment is basic but very functional and large with two bedrooms and all the facilities for cooking and the best view of Florence. The restaurant is lovely and so close to home. You will need a car for access to groceries and train to florence, etc. I can't really say anything more than to highly recommend it. Lorenzo was so very helpful about general travel in the area. They are a lovely family.

Room Tip: go for the cipresso with view of florence

We were travelling with our son in Italy for three weeks and this was by far our favourite spot. Lorenzo and his family went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The town of Poggio alla Croce is very small and quiet and the views are fantastic. Amenities such as groceries, train station and restaurants are 7 Kim's away and the Coop grocery store is amazing for such a small area. We ate at Lorenzo's family's restaurant twice in our five day stay and these turned out to be our best eating experiences while we were in Italy. The cooking class with Danillo is also a must as he makes it so much fun. The apartment we stayed in was very clean and comfortable and was equipped with everything we needed. We definitely hope to return some day to this beautiful region.

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Apartmenti Il Castagno--Lorenzo and his family made us feel so welcome. Lorenzo explained the surrounding areas and sites for us to see and gave us a highlighted map. He made our trip so easy. We were a party of 4 and really enjoyed the spacious apartment, comfortable beds, fully outfitted kitchen (although we only made breakfast-the restaurant food was incredible) Having a washing machine was fantastic and well appreciated as we had been traveling a while and desperately needed it! We were very impressed at how clean the apartment was. The views out the windows were gorgeous. We had a car which was very necessary as we wanted to see the castles, wine tasting, San Germignano, Greve, etc. We had a parking space a few steps away. There is a beautiful lounge area overlooking the hills where we enjoyed a Happy Hour before enjoying a delicious dinner created by Danilo. He also offers cooking classes to those staying in the apartment. I wish I'd had time to take the class, as the best food in our 29 days of eating in Italy was from Danilo's kitchen! The hike up to Poggio a la Croce was great and the views fantastic.

Room Tip: Best room for views and quiet is the room with the twin beds.

Lorenzo and his family were very helpful and welcoming. We were a party of 4 adults and loved the apartment and the views. The place is as advertised, large and comfortable and a nice place to stay. Clothes washer a BIG plus! I recommend hiking up Poggio alla Croce for the views and eating I'm Lorenzo's family's restaurant for the food and the views.

We stayed in the apartment towards end of August for 5 days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Location and views are great. Hosts were wonderful and attended to all our needs. Apartment was huge, has wonderful viewss, and was very clean. Lorenzo provided all details and the the entire experience was perfect. Train is close by and so is a supermarket. Awesome areas are all around and easy to explore from this apartment. Parking is plentiful which was a big plus and it is close to Florence, sites in tuscanny and permium outlets for shopping. Not speaking Italian was not an issue.

Four adults stayed for six nights from May 28 to June 02, 2012. The two bedroom apartment was spacious, well equipped, quiet, and had a superb view from the balcony. There was outdoor space for relaxing reading and enjoying the great mountain air. The small town was quaint, and the local folks were very friendly. Lorenzo and his family were excellent hosts and assisted us in getting into town to rent a car and to find our way to the train station when we left. The location is about 20 Kms outside of Florence and is only serviced by a twice daily bus. The main train into Florence is 7 Kms away. The nearest town with services is 4 Kms. Greve in the Chianti area is wonderful with many small quaint towns, castles, restaurants, shopping, wineries, olive groves etc. Strongly recommend a rental car, it is not easy to get around otherwise. The somewhat remoteness of the appartment is offset by the quiet, lower cost, and life in the cute town. The food at the restauraunt is exceptional and I agree with reviewers that found it authentic Italian and better than most restaurants. There is a great winery a couple of Kms down the road, the wines were excellent.
