We celebrated our anniversary and final night in Chianti at the Locanda Borgo Antico and were not disappointed. Stefano was helpful and charming while his wife Patrizia created Tuscan Magic in the kitchen. We shared a mixed antipasto followed by a 1.2 kg Bistecca Fiorentina with vegetables and salad. This was followed by a plate of local Pecornino cheese and all was accompanied by a local Chianti Classico Riserva wine approved by Stefano after he rejected the first bottle he opened. We will return on our next trip to Tuscany and do not agree with earlier negative reviews from others who may not appreciate the difference between the Italian and North American style of enjoying food.

We stumbled on this place after discovering our first choice was closed and it was a very happy stumble! In a quite piazza (Piazza Santo Spirito) that is on the "other side" of the Arno, this restaurant was filled with mostly locals. We had great pizza and the pasta with pesto was the best meal I had in Italy. Very large portions, nice outdoor area, helpful staff and not very touristy. Loved it.

After a glorious day at the Palio in Siena, we ventured up into Lucolena on the recommendation of the renter of our house in Ponte Agli Stoli. We were greeted warmly enough and there was a view of the kitchen with the chef hard at work. The signs were very positive. We did not have a reservation (our bad), but they were still very accommodating. We (2 adults and 3 teenagers) were seated in 10 minutes. The restaurant was full and active on a Monday night. From there it all headed south. Before the details, I would offer that we are from the NYC area and have often enjoyed some of the best restaurants there and in suburban NJ. We have also been lucky enough to dine in Paris and London on numerous occasions. Although not "foodies", we do have a good feel for a restaurant that is on it's game.

At Il Borgo Antico we were handed off from one server to the other (the gentleman shown on their web site) after the first visit. He then was very scarce and not very helpful on the specials or the menu in general. To be fair, our order was a bit scattered and I think it offended him. Three of our party shared various antipasti dishes while one of my daughters and I had more traditional fare. For such an established restaurant it should not have been a problem to time that. We had numerous dinners while on the same trip when "lesser" restaurants had no trouble at all. When the food arrived it was nothing special - a pear risotto which was essentially a dessert pudding and each other pasta or main course (I had the steak with mushrooms) was overly salted - a true sign of a kitchen in trouble. Then after dinner our plates sat partially empty with no activity for what seemed forever. The waiter did not visit until I flagged him down, and even then he was very contrite. At the same time the other tables were receiving all the attention they could want and more. We didn't even attempt a dessert order or coffee. The final bill was left with a what seemed like a snarl and left a bad taste in our mouths. Thank goodness for a brilliant dinner and a glorious experience the next night at Badia in Coltibuono to crush this poor memory.

The wine and pasta are great at the Piazza de Santo spirito. Make sure you meet the pizzaiolo, the manager and the waiter/ waitress. They fun and very helpful. And the price is perfect!

Gorgeous Tuscan food for those prepared for a detour.

It's halfway between Greve in Chianti and Figline Valdarno - the first on the Chianti road joining Florence and Siena; the second on the A1 motorway between Florence and Arezzo, so you can reach it from either in half an hour.

A very pleasant view on a secondary valley in the middle of the Tuscan Appennines matches the food and encourages you to take your time before being on your way again.
