Villa il Castellaccio
Reviewed August 10, 2013

This was our first visit to Il Castellaccio and it won't be our last. There are 5 villas in total, one of which is huge and is self contained with it's own garden and private pool. We stayed in Villa 3 with the large terrace which we really enjoyed and was of a high standard. We were fortunate to meet other families there from other parts of the world and the pool was a great place for the kids to play and let off steam! The apartment was really well equipped with dishwasher and washing machine and a corkscrew! The beds were very comfortable which is a first for most places we have stayed. There is no air conditioning so I expected the nights in particular to be a problem but I slept well at night with little problem. Trying to keep the inevitable mosquitoes at bay was of course another issue.

In general the estate was very well kept. The great thing about this villa is its proximity to Figline Valdarno station which can take you to Florence in 20 mins if you get a fast train. This is a real bonus because if you are like me and have driven in Florence, it is a nightmare. To quote the owner, Leonardo, going by train really is the 'best solution'. This place is also close to the main chianti towns and would recommend Castellina and Greve in particular for a visit and some wine tasting. In all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come back again.

Thank you Leonardo for a very pleasant week and for your hospitality!

Oct 6-13, 2012 was our third trip to Villa il Castellaccio in Lucolena, IT. This trip we had 13 travelers, and used the Villa, and two apartments. This is a lovely facility, regal enough to make you feel special, and comfortable enough to feel right at home. Leonardo and Roxana went out of their way to accomodate our needs and desires. We usually all convene in the Villa kitchen and dining room, even if we sleep in the other apartments. However, our entire group had a pizza dinner in Apartment #3, which we had prepared ourselves in the outdoor kitchen with a wood burning pizza oven! We find this location perfect for exploring all the lovely Tuscan hill towns, close enough to come back home and relax whenever we are tired. Already, we can't stop talking about our next trip.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in apartment 2. Clean, well-appointed, fun layout in centuries-old building. Hosts were friendly and helpful. Close to many wonderful villages and great scenery. Super restaurant in nearby Dudda. Driving nearby roads was challenging and fun; a great way to see some beautiful countryside. Villa is well equipped, rooms are large and very comfortable for three or four people. Highly recommended!

Villa Il Castellaccio was a perfect base for exploring Tuscany. We stayed in Apt. 2 and had a great experience. The apartment is huge and very clean. Leonardo and Roxanne were communicative and responsive from start to finish -- and Roxanne gave us great ideas for itineraries while in the area. In fact, she recommended a town off the tourist trail that turned out to be a terrific day for us. The weather was a too cool for enjoying the outdoor space (pool), but the property is extremely well-manicured and gorgeous. The views are incredible. And the apartments and villa are designed in such a way so as to ensure the most privacy possible -- we didn't hear any of the neighbors while in our apartment. I would definitely stay again and recommend the property to anyone looking to enjoy and explore a beautiful area of Tuscany.

I have stayed at this property several times, with family three times and with friends twice. Four times I have stayed at the large villa, and once in one of the smaller apartments at the back fo the property. Both are comfortable, the location is outstanding, and the hosts accommodating and friendly. I would go back without hesitation.

Room Tip: The villa is great for groups -- five "master" bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Th...

We just stayed one week in this fantastic villa. We were 12 persons, and this is an ideal place to stay for several families jointly. The villa is spacious with plenty of common areas. The kitchen with access to the pool areas is on the bottom floor. We had our dinners outside, except one chilly evening. There is space for all 12 of us to eat at the same time, either outside by the pool or inside by a huge fireplace. We used the chef service for the first two evenings, which was excellent.

The kids loved the pool, although it is not heated, so can be a bit cold at times, even though it was very warm in the air (above 35 degrees) several days. The place is ideal for day trips to surrounding places, including both Florence and Sienna, plus numerous other small scenic villages. We BBQ'ed a couple of evenings. Buy meat at the famous butcher in Greve. I can also recommend the Cantina under the supermarket in Greve. Fantastic place for buying - and tasting wine. We drank plenty.

As the previous reviewer wrote, the place has no air-conditioning, so it can get very warm in the nights. Even though we tried to keep windows closed during daytime, as suggested, it still was too hot to sleep comfortably. This is the only thing that reduces my rating front top score. But I would gladly go back to this place, and can highly recommend it.

Room Tip: It can get very hot at night in the two top floor (under the roof) sleeping rooms.

We had a week at the villa with 11 family members, kids and adults .

The location is just stunning, with views of the hills and vineyards that ensure you really feel you are in the heart of Chianti. We went for early morning walks and runs in the hills/forests and as well as the tranquil scenery enjoyed seeing deer and wild boar with piglets.

The villa is extremely spacious and beautifully furnished (some lovely antiques) with large bedrooms and generous bathrooms and masses of lounge space (formal and casual). Kitchen and dining downstairs is large

The pool whilst not as large or deep as the photos suggest was a godsend for cooling off and relaxing around and we made good use of the wood barbeque.

There are so many fantastic places to see both locally and further afield, and we found the week shot by having taken in Pisa/Lucca, Florence, Siena/Monteriggioni/San Gimignano and Greve/Panzano. The dirt road to Greve is worth doing, great views and less windy corners.

Leonardo was very helpful and responsive to all our queries and requests and provided great information and recommendations. We particularly enjoyed the Tuscan dinner cooked by the chef he recommended -a real treat and a memorable evening. I do hope he does follow up on our suggestion of providing plastic tumblers for use around the pool area, as our daughter cut her foot on some glass from a previous guests breakage.

It was very hot whilst we were there (37 degrees for a number of days) -apparently not typical and we did find it hot at night, particularly the top rooms, with no airconditioning or fans .This lowered our rating as we had a few sleepless nights. Leonardo did howver provide some fans after our request.
