“A revigorating cannyon river swimm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2013

Do not miss Gole Acantara if you visit Sicily and Taormina or Catania region. A swimm in the fresh water will certainly do you good. And the view is really nice.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

Icy cold, and abit out of the way, however this place is worth a visit for a couple of hours. Bring a beach towel and there is an entrance fee that is to be paid.

“Interesting geology”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

The river crosses an ancient lava flow. On contact with the water, the lava cooled quickly, taking on a crystalline structure. Over time, the water eventually eroded its way through the lava to form a gorge. There is an elevator which takes you down to the beach where swimming is possible.

“Bizzarre rock formations”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

Now this is a place to see, if you are into stones and rock formations. When the lava cooled down, the resulting rocks acquired crystal-like properties. Those can be seen on the steep flanks of the riverbed that the Alcantara river has washed out of the old lava stones. There is a parking place at the entrance, where they charge you for an elevator trip down to the beach, but if you just park and walk a little uphill on the street, on your left you will find a free entrance with steps.

“Not as good as Lydford Gorge in Devon!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

Some mildly interesting geological rock formations but not as good an experience as Devon's Lydford Gorge
