The history of this place is fascinating and that alone makes it worth the trip. The mosaics are amazing and very popular among tour groups. If you are not on a tour I recommend late afternoon. We saw it with only two tours in tow and they made it hard to view. I would not want to be following twenty!
But I would go see this again if in Sicily.

We were so pleasantly surprised at the high quality of the mosaics in this villa and the degree they've been preserved. This villa is well worth a few hours of time, and we'd even recommend a guide (which we did not have and wished we did). We all enjoyed this site, and it was worth the nearly 2 hour drive from Agrigento. Even the teenager in our family enjoyed this. Don't miss this site, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Although we had read reviews for this world famous site before we visited, nothing could have prepared us for the spectacular site on offer. Although not all of the complex is open there are enough areas accessible to make the visit an incredibly memorable one. The mosaics themselves are stunning and most of the information boards (in both Italian and English) are very informative. Well worth the 1.5 hour drive from our base in Syracuse.

Take the time to drive to Villa Romana. I have seen roman mosaics in other countries. These are certainly the most complete and impressive that I have ever seen. They say they are the best preserved in the world, I can see why. There is a cafe and toilets on the site. The mosaics are enclosed with viewing walkways and we were there around midday and it was very hot, so recommend going earlier in the day.
