We stopped in here on our way from Agrigento to Siracusa, and boy was it worth it! I didn't do much research on this site prior to our trip so I was surprised at the number of visitors and blossoming trinket trade that has sprung up along the path from the parking lot to the entrance. But, WOW, it was simply amazing to see the detail in the floor mosaics present here. This is an absolute must see in Sicily! I noted that the No Photos signs are thoroughly ignored nor enforced. Also, skip the absolutely worthless audio guide. It basically just reads short versions of the placards to you.

We visited Villa Romana and bought postcards and stamps from the stalls. Only after we had bought the stamps did we realise they could only be posted in GPS boxes. 3 weeks later our cards have still not arrived. 2 postcards sent with official post office stamps were delivered in UK 2 days later! The mosaics however are well worth visiting, buy the cards but DONT buy the stamps.

If you travel by public transport, as I did, Piazza Armerina is quicked to reach from Catania International Airport by bus.
Please mind, that bus station is a bit out of old town.
However when you reach it, a shuttle will take you to the World Heritage site Villa Casale with ist fantastic mosaics.

We stopped here for lunch - trattoria Del Goloso was excellent. Pretty sleepy little town. Not much food available at villa Casale so come here first

It's clear some reviewers are mixing up the town of Piazza Armerina with Villa Romana just outside the city. The Villa mosaics are amazing but Piazza Armerina is also worth a visit, on a hill with a lovely historic center. Plenty to see on foot, and some worthwhile restaurants as well.
