It is surprising how two reviews from the same time period can be so very different.

My wife and I spent six nights at the hotel and used it as a central location for our stay in Italy. Our trip was long from Texas; however, as soon as we arrived, we were pleased with our choice in lodging. The room was clean; the bed a bit hard, but hey, we are in Italy having fun. The staff provided excellent communication while getting ready for our trip, a surprise bouquet of flowers and Cinque Terre Wine for my wife were waiting in the room to celebrate her birthday. Recommendations were asked for dinners and we never had a bad meal there.

I believe that if you go there thinking you are going to a Hilton Hotel or equivalent, you may be disappointed. If you go there realizing that you are going to a small Italian town, you will be certainly and pleasantly surprised.

The pool had its own issues, granted. A lot of the pool problems were a result of some hideous rain that pounded the area before and during our stay; hard to keep the pH in check with that kind of weather. There is a very nice beach right down the hill that allowed for bathrooms and fresh water showers; we opted for the beach each and every time we could.

At the end of the day, we were quite happy with the quality of hotel that we experienced; clean, friendly, and safe.

Period of stay 23-24 September 2009.
Property definitely not of 4-Star standard; more like 3-Star Bed & Breakfast. There is hardly a view of the sea far away (misleading advertising?). Owned and managed by family who reside on the premises (atmosphere tended to be oppressive from our
perspective as guests e.g. when it came to complaint-handling). Rude staff attitude made our stay uncomfortable. Swimming pool not available for use, poor water quality and pool not within easy reach. Not child friendly.

We stayed at the Hotel Al Terra di Mare and used it as a base to visit the Cinque Terre...We found the hotel to be very repsonsive to emails and generally very helpful...We were arriving late at night and the staff waited for us and helped us park the car and with our bags...They were also were of great help in planning our trip to the Cinque Terre...We woke up early the next morning and were impressed by the grounds of the hotel...Breakfast was average and definitely could have had more variety.

The hotel is a very good value and is a great place to stay if you are visiting the Cinque Terre and are looking for a spacious, relaxing base with which to operate from...As a note, there are trains and a boat service between Levanto and the Cinque Terre that make getting around very easy.

I was disappointed in this Hotel. It was more expensive than other hotels I stayed in during this trip but the service was poorer. It advertised a pool but the hotel is on a steep hill and they never told you that the pool was FAR below the rooms. The pool looked great but I didn't see anyone in it because it was so far away. Also, I wasn't aware that the shuttle service they have is NOT free. It only goes at set times and heaven forbid you want to get to the train station at an odd time, (like 4:30 pm). However, the most frustrating thing was the inability to communicate with the staff. I asked questions and the girl would say something but it was not the answer to my question. Then she would say, "Do you understand?" repeatedly. I would understand what she said but unfortunately it wasn't helpful. Then, to top things off, she gave us wrong information about the CinqueTerra trail which is what people go there to do. I got the inpression that she was laughing at us. To be fair, the girl who actually drove the shuttle bus was delightful and the room was modern and spacious.

Al Terra di Mare is a gem in Levanto, as long as you are ok not being downtown Levanto. On the drive into town, we could not find the hotel. We went all the way to the beach and had to ask an ambulance driver who gave us great directions. I would advise getting specific directions from the hotel because the hotel does not have an “exact address” so you can’t map it or add it to a GPS. The hotel is up a very steep windy driveway and it has a lift to help get your bags up to reception level. The people who worked at the hotel were great! A huge help with what to do and how to get there. Train times, water taxi’s, etc. The breakfast was fantastic, we even had dinner one night, and that was great! If you don’t want to drive they will give you a ride to/from town for a small fee. We ended up here because everything in town was booked, and I am so glad we did! It was a mountain hideaway surrounded with olive trees and vineyards. It was so beautiful. The rooms were great; bathrooms were big along with a hair dryer and generous shampoo and soap. We had a view of the mountain and a terrace outside our door. We loved it!!

I researched and spoke to people, and we decided happily to stay at this hotel in Levanto and "commute" to the Cinque Terre. This only works well if you have a car, as the hotel is up on the hillside outside of town, and not an easy walk from town and the train station (they have a shuttle but there is a scheduling/expense factor) . The hotel staff couldn't have been nicer, and our double deluxe was nicely furnished, and high up with a view of the valley and a portion of the ocean- left the windows open for wonderful fresh air. The pool was down the hill and just opened the weekend we arrived. It has limited hours, but is an infinity pool, nice size, and there are chaises and umbrellas.

For the Cinque Terre, you drive down to the train station, park at one of two lots (buy a ticket at a machine at the lot for x number of hours- bring euro coins with you- I think 6 euros for 8 hours, put the ticket on the dashboard), and buy your Cinque Terre Pass at the train ticket window (good for as many days as you choose, which includes unlimited train rides and a pass for walking the trail between the 5 towns). The train runs frequently and it is only minutes between each town, so you can take the train, walk between whatever towns you want and ride back. The hotel gave us a nice map of Levanto- it had several Levanto restaurants listed on it, but the hotel clerk recommended a "downtown"restaurant that wasn't listed that was very good and reasonable- outside tables on a little side street
Most of the inter-town trails are well paved, safe and easy (we found estimates of the time to walk between the towns to be inflated) EXCEPT the "2 hour" trail walk between Monterosso and Vernassa was a very challenging1.75 hours (including rest stops), but very satisfying.
The hotel serves drinks and snacks, and has a beautiful patio overlooking the valley and some ocean view, that was very relaxing at the end of the day. Parking was free and next to the hotel. It was the best of both worlds for the Cinque Terre portion of our trip.
The only negative was a problem with internet access, since I could not use a USB plug from the wall for my Apple Touch.

Great place to stay as a base for Cinque Terre. Very good value for the hotel rate. But best for someone with a car, although shuttles is available at fixed times. The staff was wonderful and the setting was beautiful. Really nice, especially the breakfast and meals. Beautiful and quiet location. We definitely would go there again for longer.
