New or recently refurbished and run directly by the lovely owners, this hotel is a great place to be when visiting the cinque terre region. Very good rooms, nice services and even great (and cheap) food. Levanto is also a nice city to be explored and that can fit all tastes: from beach lovers to trekking adventurers. Do not let go exploring the bike track to Framuro that goes through an ald train tunnel carved on the rocks close to the Mediterranean sea!

Hotel Carla not only met, but exceeded our expectations as a comfortable place from which to explore the Cinque Terre. The rooms are small but comfortable. If you aren't comfortable with the smallishness of European hotel rooms, request the larger rooms that are available and poke your head in a standard room while you're there.... You now see that it was money well spent. There is a market a few steps away to help you provision for your day or your evening picnic on the front patio. Valentina was absolutely the best in regards to helping decide on your itinerary, if you are in doubt. The train is an easy and short walk from the hotel, as is the rest of Levanto and the shore, though the beach is probably 10-15 min walk away. Not only would I not hesitate to stay again, I look forward to returning. The air conditioning was great and the windows/ patio doors were very effective at blocking the sounds of the motor bikes below on the street.

Hotel Carla is a gem of modern design in an area that has a lot of traditional places. The lobby is gorgeous and the room was also very slick if a bit small, but it had a tiny balcony which was nice. The street is very noisy with a high school across the street, but with the windows closed, it wasn’t bad and with the great shades, it was possible to get a good night sleep without waking up too early from the morning light. Breakfast was very nice and the staff was friendly. If you are touring the Cinque Terre area for a few days, this could make a great home base. Whether you’re doing it by car or by train (we did both), it’s a good pick.

Being as we had limited time in the area we chose this hotel based on the fact it's in between Cinque Terre and Portofino... and we couldn't have been happier! The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly (even sending us a complimentary bottle of Champagne to celebrate our honeymoon), the rooms are comfortable beyond words and the hotel is impeccably clean. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. :)

Our group of 14 had a wonderful half-board stay in Hotel Carla during the first week in October 2011. The hotel was decorated in a very chic ‘boutique’ style and proved excellent value for money. All of the staff were friendly and helpful but Valentina was outstanding both in helping with booking arrangements and making sure the group were happy throughout their 7-night stay. I would highly recommend the Hotel Carla as an excellent base to explore Cinque Terre. Levanto itself is a really interesting town and we all enjoyed going to the beach at the end of our walks to enjoy a beautiful sunset each evening.

Room Tip: Do ask for a balcony as the outside space is lovely on a warm evening

Spent a week at the Hotel Carla with a group of 13 other walkers from Scotland. We were delighted with this modern, clean hotel which offered a very good choice of a hot and cold buffet breakfast and served a four course dinner.in the evening. There was a pleasant area with comfortable seats under umbrellas just at the Hotel entrance to relax in and enjoy a coffee or drink. All the public areas were very tastefully furnished and although the bedrooms weren`t large they were spacious enough and the beds were extremely comfortable. The staff, without exception, whether housemaids, waitresses or receptionists were excellent and although we had no contact with the kitchen staff, the food was very enjoyable. The co-ordinator of our group found Valentina in particular a pleasure to deal with..If you or a group are planning a trip to this area I would certainly recommend you consider basing yourself at the Hotel Carla.

room a bit small. good size bed, but not much room around the bed. closet and shelves for your clothes. in-room safe. charming patio, but no water view. bath is clean. free wireless in room and lobby. hotel is a bit tricky to find first time. half way between train station and beach. free breakfast is decent but not too many choices. no bar but front desk serves limited drinks until about midnight.

about the area....

Cinque Terre is not handicap friendly. i didn't see elevators in train stations. definitely no escalators anywhere. i can't get chilly and drizzle even in July, which is good if you hike 6 hours.

levanto is about 10 min train ride to Monterrosso, the first of 5 Cinque Terre town. its easier to find rooms here than C.T. Only Levanto and Monterrosso have sandy beaches. Other 4 towns are cliffs and rocks. Levanto is pretty dead after 10pm. Monterrosso is more touristy.

hotel is tricky to find from train station. best to get a 10 euro taxi if you have big luggage. i didn't see any taxi when i arrived around 9pm and i took stairs down to lower street level. there may be some in the upper level by the station building entrance. if not call your hotel and ask for a taxi. there are 2 ways to get to hotel. long walk is get to street level below platforms turn right, under viaducts. street curves left. you come to an uphill street on your left with a restaurant in the corner. then you go all the way up to end. there is a Fiat dealer (small with 2-3 car showroom). turn left, pass a grocery store on right. then hotel is at next intersection on right. about 15 min walk. the short walk also starts from lower street level but cross the street. there is a trailer parking on your left. gas station further left. climb up about 5 steps. cross a bridge over a dry riverbed. down another 5 steps. turn right under a bridge. 2 streets there under the bridge. take the one further left. walk about 5 minutes then turn left and hotel is on next intersection. this is about 10 min walk. easy if you have backpack or small luggage on wheels.

If you like hiking, take train to Riomaggiore, then hike all the way back to Monterrosso. A good 6 hour hike. don't wear sandals. Gym shoes will do. Lot of uphill. can be challenging in hot weather. The firs segment "lover's path" is easy. get a combination train-trail pass which is good for all trails; more cost effective. train tickets have to validated with machine on lower level before riding train or you might be fined. i was never checked in 3 days there, but the fine is hefty.

eat dinner at "L'Ancora Della Tortuga" in Monterrosso before it gets dark so you can enjoy the amazing view. good food too. price i think in the 20 euro range per meal, if i remember right.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187820-d1111538-Reviews-L_Ancora_della_Tortuga-Monterosso_al_Mare_Cinque_Terre_Italian_Riviera.html

on the trail, just before reaching Vernazza eat or drink at "bar la torre" for even prettier views.

Plan on spending the evening in Monterrosso. they had free band near water around 10pm

Room Tip: i noticed at least 2 types of rooms. the ones with balcony are a bit bigger.
