The staff (restaurant & housekeeping) were very attentive and patient when it came to my limited Italian. The food was wonderful. The hotel and its' guests reminded me of an Italian Fawlty Towers. My only and greatest complaint was the way I was treated by the woman who ran/owned the place. She not only berated me on several occasions in front of a room FULL of people and had a general attitude towards me the entire time. I actually tried to leave the hotel and go some where else as I had to shake her negative vibe off of me every morning before my daily hike of the Cinque Terre. She would not let me out if my reservation, though it would it would have opened up a room for the weekend which people were actively seeking. If you are fluent in Italian, I am sure it would be a wonderful experience. It is a short walk from the train station, and close to the beach & trail. There are medieval buildings, amazing.
I DO FEEL I SHOULD HAVE HAD A BETTER GRASP ON THE LANGUAGE AS I WAS A VISITOR THERE. I still do not think this excuses a person to scream at you or crack jokes about the person when they are sitting there, understanding most of what you are saying.
I did like the meals being included, but I had to be back for dinner by 8PM and did not get to try other restaurants. I had just spent 10 days on a rigorous schedule and I regretted not being able to eat when I wanted.

My friend and I took a road trip through Italy in August of 2004. After a few unsuccessful attempts of trying to drive into one of the Cinque Terre villages, we drove into Levanto. Upon arriving we spotted Hotel Dora, liked the looks of the place so went inside. We booked a room for three nights, the value was okay considering what time of year it was. The room was small, but had a large balcony on which we spent many of our evenings. Hotel also has a wraparound porch around the front of the hotel. Was always nice to order a drink at the small bar and sit outside to read or write postcards. The continental breakfasts were satisfying. Staff at the front desk helpful. Great location!! Short walk to the beach, grocery store, shops, and train station. Be sure to purchase a Cinque Terre pass at the train station for the best deal of transportation. The hotel also had it's own private parking area, so we felt safe leaving our car. Be forwarned that it's hot and muggy in August, that was the one downfall of our room. We really could've used a fan or something. Because we were close to a busy street, leaving the doors to the balcony open at night wasn't an option. Needless to say the room got very hot and uncomfortable at night. Leave the bathroom fan on to ventilate the room!!!

Last November I planned a visit to Levanto for a week in March with a friend who is similarly interested in walking and learning Italian. When we arrived our hotel - on 13th March it was closed and in total darkness. This turned out to be our good fortune for when we inquired at the Hotel Dora (a three star hotel) we were offered half board together with two nights in their hotel (they were already fully booked) and the other five nights in a luxurious penthouse apartment on the seafront. Each evening we had our meals in the hotel which was exclusively occupied by Italians who obviously knew its good reputation. Most of them were on full board for only a few euros more. We found Levanto - the gateway to the Cinque Terre - a perfect base. It has a very old medieval quarter, lots of good restuarants and cafes. From it there are at least four full day walks - either along the seacliffs on either side of the bay- or up to the dozen or more medieval villages which sit in the natural amphitheatre of which Levanto is centre stage. The rail station takes you to the five villages perched on cliffs overlooking the sea accessible only by rail or sea: known as the Cinque Terre. Here one walks from village to village among spectacular scenery, vineyards and olive groves. A truly unforgettable holiday for anyone wanting to meet friendly Italians (not too many English speaking tourists) And from 13th March until 20th it was sunshine every day and not a drop of rain. Spring comes early there. And we never missed a meal in the hotel each evening because of the variety and value for money.
