“Living in a Time-Capsule!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

As soon as we got off the taxi on the bridge that connects Ischia town to the islet where the 15th-century Aragonese castle and this hotel converted from an attached monastery, are located, we were immediately transported to another world and another time. Stunning as a description would do scant justice to this fabulous hotel!

Cave-like passageways with in-built lifts, carried us to the top where tourists were intermingling with hotel guests at the beautiful Caffe Il Monastero, looking over gorgeous views of the island, and the beautiful blue waters studded with boats and the occasional swimmers.

The rooms were minimal in their decor but very comfortable, again complimented by stunning views through the windows. The famed restaurant served delectable dishes prepared with fresh ingredients grown in the hotel's gardens, and the staff was always courteous and prepared to help in any way possible.

Eager to enhance our holiday experience, my husband and I booked appointments with their newly offered spa services. However, it turned out to be a disappointment. The masseuse, though very sweet and amiable, couldn't converse in English, which perhaps led to a certain amount of mis-communication, and instead of giving us a nice massage, she ended up giving us a rather harsh and uncomfortable rub-down.

This minor gripe aside, this is a hotel that I would highly recommend to everyone, especially if just one of the perks is the blissful experience of sitting on the terrace of the hotel, observing a breathtaking sun set over the blue Aegean Sea, with a cocktail and snacks in hand, and only the friendly seagulls for company!

Welcoming hotel on its own mini island off to the east of ischia ponte.

Set in old monastery there is character in spades. The rock is actually a monument and tourist attraction in its own right but the hotel is above the public areas and you hardly know they are there.

Rooms are fairly basic but personally we prefer that character from the orthodox hotel style when staying in an historical place like this. Only real grumble was the beds which are a bit on the hard side.

Views from all side of the hotel are good and there is no need to panic over getting the "right" room. The real decision is whether you want a sunrise or sunset. The rock is to the east of ischia ponte so you get a sunset and view of the town/island which had from rm 26 and we were delighted with it. The easterly view takes in a lot of sea, adjacent islands, Naples bay and Capri in the distance. Also excellent.

Food in the hotel was very good, with an Italian gourmet twist without being over the top. It wouldn't surprise me if this was the best food in ischia ...? Dining on the terrace an extra pleasure weather permitting.

There are lovely gardens of various types, a small cottage garden growing produce for the kitchen. To the east there are lovely old landscaped terraces with several churches included. It really is an idyllic place.

Sunbathing can be done but it is much more conducive to go down to the several beaches that start just 5 minutes walk back over the ponte. Some of them have excellent eateries adjacent and we would particularly recommend Bagni Lucia.

Ischia is one of the nicest coastal resorts in Italy. Ischia ponte & this hotel is the place to stay unless you need to be next to the port. Other resorts we visited were also nice but for us they were not the best. Provided you like character over absolute luxury this is a great destination. So much so that we didn't even notice that there is no TV in the hotel - we just didn't miss it even on a day of iffy weather.

Last word has to go to the charming Guilio and his team who really put themselves out to help you and make your stay perfect.

We stayed here for two nights and would have loved to stay longer! It's an incredibly beautiful, historic and peaceful place to visit and stay. The rooms are lovely and simple and keep to the feeling of the castle. The staff is very helpful and always available to answer questions and offer recommendations. They're hospitality made our stay that much more relaxing. We are looking forward to coming back here someday.

Room Tip: Try and book early to get a room with a sea view.

From the time of booking to the time of checking out, the staff were extraordinary and the site was great. We stayed for three nights and had dinner on two of those nights. The room had a great view of the city and was very comfortable -- but not for everyone, there was no TV and no minibar, and the wardrobe door didn't work. The walls are thin -- so just as well there are no TVs. The setting is fantastic, inside an ancient monastery with gardens, churches, chapels, etc.

The food was extremely good and not very expensive. We took the waiter's advice about wines and were pleased with the results. Breakfasts were abundant and tasty. We were there in May and the fresh food from the gardens was part of the meals -- overall there was a focus on local ingredients and traditional preparations.

We were very happy with our stay and would certainly return.

Room Tip: Given a choice between a sea view and a city view, I would recommend the city -- it's more inter...

A great place to be outside the box! Arriving thru the town you have a great view of the Castle. Get the taxi to take you across the bridge if you have luggage. Easier than dragging it over the cobblestones. Leave your luggage at the gates and the hotel will transport them up. At reception, Guilio & Joseph treated us with friendliness and info about our stay. The rooms are simple, no tv, no fridge but the hotel brought anything you needed. It has a good restaurant, lots of choice, breakfast good which is included. We were in # 9.. The bed was hard by our standards but ok.
All in all an interesting and historical place to rest your head.

Amazing views in an historic location this is an amazing place to stay with staff who are friendly and very helpful.
I stayed at the hotel for two nights and found it delightful. You take the number 7 bus from the port and get off at the stop for the castle and then walk about 10 minutes. At the castle there is a lift that takes you 90% of the way up to the castle (not for the claustrophobic) the lady at the gate arranged for my bag to be delivered to my room. My room was simple but artistically decorated. I stayed in a single room that had a very firm mattress, however, I slept very well as there is great serenity and tranquility. The bathroom was simply appointed but again very charming. The views are magnificent. Breakfast is served in the restaurant area which has amazing views of the sea and the island's coastline. The restaurant is great, dinner was delicious and breakfast was simple but very nice.
I feel I must give special mention to the hotel staff who really made my stay special, I was not feeling well on Sunday night but needed to eat and did not realise the restaurant was closed, they specially cooked me some pasta and served it in the restaurant complete with music and a candle. They are great hosts and very friendly. This is a very beautiful place to stay.
Tip: best thing to do on the island is visit Negombo thermal park, it's awesome and has the best beach.

There's no better place to stay on the island of Ischia than Il Monastero. The ancient castle, on its own private islet accessed by a pedestrian walkway, houses at its top this beautiful, modern small hotel. Views of the Bay and the island of Ischia from the large patio are extraordinary, and the staff truly cares about the satisfaction and comfort of every guest. Giulio is beyond helpful, and even provided for us a list of restaurants in other parts of southern Italy that we planned to visit after leaving the islands. He and Joseph were always available and eager to answer questions and offer suggestions. Staying in this castle was a unique and wonderful experience!
