Having reviewed many hotels, this one was easy to award 5 stars to if you also enjoy the dinner.
We flew into Naples airport and got a 19 euro taxi to the Molo Beverello port. With 4 of us, it was cheaper and more convenient than the Alibus (5 euro). It was easy to find a boat to Ischia Porto, the nearest port to the hotel.
There are three options for ferries: alilauro- from Molo Beverello only with hydrofoil; caremar from Molo Beverello with hydrofoil and from Porta di Massa with ferry; medmarnavi from Porta di Massa only with ferry.
The ferries take about 1.5 hours and are much cheaper. The fast boats are under the 1 hour. The web sites give you times but they are regular and you can just buy the most convenient ticket at the port. Molo Beverello and Porta di Massa are close by.
The hotel if wonderful. The rooms are nice- very clean; comfortable beds; air conditioned; ours had a little area for wet clothes and a nice bathroom. Nothing to rave about but does the job.
The hotel has a nice common lounge area where you can use wifi and a lovely restaurant.
We rarely eat at the restaurant in a hotel but this was fantastic. For a extra 10 euro each we received a 3 course dinner each night. The waiters were a delight and gave us some home made lemoncello on the last night. The final dinner included a full barbequed fish after a seafood pasta!
Everything was looked over with the careful eye of Raffaello, who was lovely. I embarrassingly stuffed up the booking and had us booked for an extra night. I was quite happy to pay for my mistake and he simply said not to worry.
Most of the staff seemed to be in the family and really made the trip much more enjoyable. They really care.
Ischia itself was really enjoyable. I had been worried about the area (Capri etc) being just too touristy. Having latter done a day trip to Sorrento and Positano, I am very glad we chose Ischia. The buildings are not pretty, there are not lots of fancy shops and the beaches are nothing to write home about (although much better than Amalfi coast) but it has a lovely feel. It is where the Italians go on holidays. And it has the thermal pools.
The pool at the hotel is filled every day and looks orange. We enjoyed many warm swims, although looked like we has a fake tan from the orange! We also enjoyed the local beach. Go right out the front door and first right. Down past the church you hit the beach in about 5 minutes. The castle overlooks the beach.
We also enjoyed a trip to Negombo, the thermal park. It is not cheap but we had a great day.
The trip from the port to the hotel is 15 euro in a taxi for 5 minutes! Get the bus instead if you want to save a little. The bus tickets are not cheap, but cheaper from the bus terminal, just above the port. Grab a map to work out the bus routes. Beware the buses are very packed and not reliable in late June at least.
We paid 114 euro per night for 4, including breakfast plus 40 euro for dinner for 4. Great value.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Cousins Sandro and Raffaele Buono are proud to be the third generation of their family to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to their guests, especially the many who regularly return to enjoy a stay at the Europa. In the early 1950s, their grandfather Antonio opened a restaurant here - the "Ristorante l'Aranceto" - and by 1956 the popularity of the location so close to the historic borgo of Ischia Ponte and the fortunate discovery of an underground thermal spring had persuaded him and his sons Tonino and Gaetano to add their first few rooms, creating the Hotel Europa. Over the years the building has evolved and grown but their warm family welcome and perfect hospitality have never changed. ... more less
