“Good balance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

My family moved to this hotel from another one in Ischia and we found it to be an ideal setting: the property and pool area is large enough to spend the whole day there sunbathing / swimming and then in the afternoons you can take a walk to the centre, which is less than 5 minutes away. The pool is lovely, great temperature, good shallow end for kids and a nice pool side bar where you can have a light snack for lunch.
The rooms were also lovely, we had a suite with a separate living room and view over the pool area. Overall very nice.

Staff and management were mostly very friendly and helpful, particularly the guys by the pool and at the bar (and also at reception).

However, there was one thing that will never make me return to this hotel: the restaurant. It was like stepping into another place entirely! Staff was rude, indifferent, grumpy and stuffy. The decor looks like it's from the 1940's and hasn't been renovated since. There is NO atmosphere whatsoever, just rows and rows of tables with dark green satin table cloths - utterly depressing. The breakfast is the WORST I have ever had, and that is not a good way to start the day. Filter coffee is as thick as tar and horribly bitter, the cereal is disgusting (no brands, and completely stale) milk for the cereal is lukewarm and the fruit is CANNED!!!!!!!! Shocking, shocking breakfast and appalling staff. The worst and most ridiculous thing I have EVER heard is that the guests who are on a half board plan get a table assigned, which remains their table exclusively for the entire duration of their stay... so there were a handful of tables outside which we could NEVER sit at because they were already "assigned" and they only do one seating per night. There were many, many guests complaining about this but the Maitre was adamant that this was a fantastic system. Just for that attitude, I will never go there again.
Apart from that, the rest was good, though the hotel could be brought into the 21st century a bit... it's in typical italian "pompous" style which is bordering on being very heavy.

Returned to this wonderful hotel after a gap of four years to find it as good as ever.
Little has changed except for new sunbeds and the plants in the immaculate gardens growing bigger.
Everything from on line booking and arranging transfers was done with great care and efficiency. We even got our favourite room as requested.
The staff, many of whom have been there for years, have that rare ability to be there when you need them and disappear when you want peace and quite. They are helpful and kind to all the guests both young and old.
The whole hotel is immaculate with the little touchs that make it feel special. The food is always exceptionally good both at breakfast and dinner
The hotel is perfectly positioned with its own beach, beautiful gardens so it is quite but a few minutes walk from from the main areas of activity so you have the best of both worlds.
We enjoyed the whole experience and will be back.Although it is not the cheapest place to stay on the island it is amazingly good value for money unlike some hotels in its class.

We stayed at the Excelsior for my daughters wedding in Ischia. The service, accommodation and location could not have been better. We had 32 people from our group at this hotel and without exception it was a 5 star experience. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and kind. From lost luggage, restaurant recommendations and arranging water taxi's, they went out of their way to help us. I hope to stay there again.

A really cosy hotel. Very good restaurant with a brilliant cheff. All the staff is very proffecional and friendly. Very green. Beautiful garden. If you plan to swim in the sea - this hotel is not for you. The sea beach is tiny and not too nice.
The SPA is not worth the money. The don't really know how to do it.

This is without doubt and outstanding hotel on a beautiful island. The hotel was stunning and the service and food excellent. The short walk through the gardens to the beach was about 1 minute and unlike many hotels there were plenty of space and sun lounges. Drinks on the terrace were very relaxing and the hotel is a short walk from the lovely pedestrianised main street. For those who stay in August there is an opportunity to go to a Gala Dinner night, mid August. This evening was exceptional. Well worth a stay and I cannot think of any complaint whatsoever. Even our Garden View looked out over the lovely garden, hills and part sea view with the Castle visible. The car park is only a staff car park and is well hidden and small…..

We are a couple in our fifties. This was our first visit to Ischia. We loved the place. The hotel was probably the best on the island. Our room had a balcony but overlooked the gardens rather than the coast. It was not a problem though as we spent to little time in our room. The pool was ideally located with plenty of loungers and excellent views of the gardens. We went half board and the restaurant was as befitting a 5 star hotel and the waiters looked after us very well. Breakfast on the terrace was brilliant with the sea in the distance through the trees.
Only grumbles concerning the hotel were the they tried to only serve the local Ischian wines which whilst they were OK we wanted sometimes to have something different. We eventually got a wine list (more like a book) but 98% of it was Italian wines only and at a mega price. Also the waiters could not grasp the concept that we wanted a white wine with one course and a red with the mains. They seemed to only want to give us one glass each. very strange. Also the drinks served on the terrace each evening were expensive. To be fair we guessed they would be as there was no drinks price list. They were served immaculately though by a very smart waiter. The other grumble was the use of the spa. We used it once and an assistance showed us how to use the sauna, shower etc and then we had to sign a slip (that should have been a clue) and on checking out we were presented with a bill for several pounds. They should have warned us that the service was chargeable. Nevertheless we enjoyed an excellent week at the Hotel Excelsior and would certainly go back if in that area.
