“A Lovely stay at the Villa Melodie”
Reviewed August 14, 2010

I was shocked to read the review of "Stinachio" dated 6th July 2010. My wife and myself spent almost two weeks at this hotel only a short time before "Stinachio". Our first visit, our friend's third. The only thing we recognise in their comments is that the mother spoke no English. Big deal - we were in Ischia not Bognor! Other than that she was friendly and always had a smile and a greeting. The "precious son" was extremely kind, helpful and always chatted ..... IN ENGLISH!! All the staff we met were always friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed our meals which were varied and tasty and of local cuisine.
And no...this was not our first holiday abroad, we have travelled the world and stayed in some very expensive establishments so do have something by which we can make comparison.
What we have encountered on numerous occasions around the world are some very disagreeable guests! It sounds to us that they probably fall into that category and if were not made welcome, probably of their own making.
Just look at the other reviews - they are the ones that of which you should consider.
Problems? Frustrating that in this day and age the hotel does not take credit cards.

A peaceful hotel in tropical gardens, excellent air con.

It is close to the free beach, spa and town. But use the buses, and take the boat trip round the island. My highlights were the mature tropical gardens surrounding the villa and the pool, it uses water from the thermal spring.

Ask the proprieter about the restaurant at the top of the hill, it has breathtaking views and was the best we experienced, well hidden.

Views from the rooms of the sea and large balconies to sit and watch the stars were a welcome addition. I am recommending this place to friends and hope to go back at different times of the year.

I highly recommend this hotel. The room we stayed in was beautiful and had a view of the Mediterranean from the balcony. It also had a view of the pool which is another huge plus about the hotel. The property is gorgeous and well taken care of. It is located a short walk from the beach and the bus stops right outside the hotel. I would definitely come back to this hotel and can not say enough nice things about it and the awesome service that we received.

Come for the pool, if you must, but don't stay for the dysfunctional family drama that plagues this inhospitable villa owned by the precious heir and son of a nightmare of an Italian mama. He has never grown up and doesn't know the first thing about running a business; she is his overbearing mother who reigns terrifyingly over the place, speaks not a word of English and would not lift a finger to help you with queries or simple requests, especially if it disturbs her peace and quiet, and it does, always it does. If my caution doesn't deter you, make sure you make plain your desire for air conditioning - it is not forthcoming unless you explicitly request it. Trust me. I learned this lesson after a sleepless night in an airless, hot tomb of a room.

Villa Melodie is an endearing family run hotel set in a leafy residential neighborhood outside the town of Forio. Buses stopping a few steps from the entrance to the hotel take you virtually anyplace on the island; the ride to Forio center takes about 10 minutes. You can buy your tickets from the driver if necessary.

Villa Melodie is a favorite of German- and Czech-speaking guests (most in the 50s to 70s age bracket) who return year after year. Nevertheless, as Americans we felt welcome. The hotel is a former family residence that is run today by two brothers, Gianni and Franco, and their mother. Gianni is fluent in English, as well as German and French.

While the hotel offers a meal plan, we choose the B&B option. Breakfasts are basic; there is a choice of breads, jam and butter, packaged cheese and ham, along with hard-boiled eggs. A machine supplies the coffee.

For dinners, we took the bus to Forio and beyond. There is also an excellent trattoria located a very steep, 20-minute uphill walk away from the hotel. For those who choose to rent a car, Gianni will arrange for the vehicle to be brought to the hotel.

Our room was spotless and the mattress was firm and comfortable. Furnishings are quite basic; our room had a small shower in the attached bathroom. There is a small tv with a couple of English channels.

The hotel is set within lush gardens and there is a large, rectangular non-heated pool ideal for lap swimming, although the temperature was a bit chilly in late September. The hotel cautions guests not to use room towels at the pool, so bring your own to use both here and at the island beaches and thermal resorts. There is also a funky, underground thermal pool in a stone grotto.

There is a hotel computer with internet access available for a small charge.

A good option for self-sufficient guests wishing to discover the charms of this magical island.

Booked this hotel to relax for 3 nights after a hectic 'touring around Italy' schedule with my young daughter and relax we did. This is THE best ever hotel I have ever stayed in!! The rooms were large and very pleasant to stay in, from the floor to the ceiling - a lot of thought has gone into this hotel down to the finest details. Plants a plenty indoors and outdoors - so relaxing and stunning.

Indoor spa pool (hot thermal water) and large outdoor pool with water fountain making lovely trickling sounds to relax you. Fantastic views from the garden (sea) and pool (mountains). Pure bliss!!

We paid for the half board option and were not disappointed with the daily set menu. Dietary restrictions for my daughter were happily accommodated so long as you tell them as early in the day as possible.

Great value for money in out of season (June) too.

Top tip: take the boat straight to Forio - a much calmer arrival and departure than arriving in busier Ischia port.

To get the bus from Forio port o the hotel: Exit the port, turn left and buy your roving bus tickets from the newspaper stand. Then continue walking in the same direction further along to the bus stop just ahead of you (near the newspaper stand on same side of road). Take the bus (ask at newspaper stand - I forget the number/s) that turn up the little road up the hill (if you have your back to the sea the road in question is almost straight ahead of you. The hotel is up this hill but you wouldnt want to lug cases up it). Ask the driver to tell you when you get to bus stop called 'via Bocco' (pronounced Vee-a Booco). Remember to put your ticket in the machine to get it validated - the bus inspectors are rife. When you get off the bus walk in the same direction that the bus continues on to - down the hill for just a few metres only and there is the entrance to Villa Melodie).

Ischia is a lovely island - we loved it. With the bus stopping a few metres from the hotel you can access so many lovely beaches and different villages etc from this hotel on a 3 day (or 7 day) roving ticket. You can even travel to the other side of the island or do a round trip in 90 minutes. Lovely views all the way.

I cannot wait to return to this relaxing and charming hotel and tranquil island. This hotel is a hidden gem and is very, very, very special.

My daughter and I backpacked through southern Italy and spent two nights at the Hotel Villa Melodie on the Island of Ischia. It was most relaxing because the family that runs the villa were very attentive and very busy making sure guests have what they need. The rooms and the views were beautiful. There is a very relaxing, large swimming pool and therapeutic pool as well. Breakfast and dinner are available on-site as part of the room reservation as long as you book both meals in advance. Very clean!!!

  • Liked — peaceful and relaxing
  • Disliked — location- not as easy to use public transportation as in some places
