“A perfect place to be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2012

It's not very often in life that you find such a great hotel. Mezzatorre has a fab position overlooking a private, rocky cove with clear blue waters and Negombo's thermal baths and beach, and it's only a stone's throw from Visconti's iconic La Columbaiae and Sir William Walton's La Mortella gardens. It's worth paying a bit extra and booking a sea or side view in the Tower, a 16th century fort. Rooms, other than suites, are small but this is not unusual for Italy and they are well appointed.

The hotel's a bit remote, but for us this was part of it's enormous charm. The hotel runs a shuttle service to the nearest town, Lacco Ameno, and the walks are beautiful. There is a good bus service and various boats and ferries go to all sorts of interesting places.

Yes, the hotel is expensive but save up - it's worth it. Mezzatorre has a wonderfully romantic feel to it, offering its guests privacy, peace and excellent service. For six consecutive evenings, a talented pianist played a grand piano for hours outside our bedroom window. How often in life does that happen?

What else makes this place so special? Above everything, it's the staff - all of them. They are kind, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very, very good at what they do. The food is fantastic, carefully prepared and much of it locally sourced, and beautifully served. Sea food, pastas, all sorts of cured meats, and the mandarin preserve made near the neighbouring town of Forio, were all wonderful.

If you feel the urge to leave the hotel, the island of Ischia is lovely - it's not as smart as its posh neighbour, Capri, but it has old fashioned charm in abundance and a wonderful laid-back feel. A boat trip to Sant'Angelo, a steep climb up Epomeo to the highest point of the island, or a visit to the the Aragonese Castle are all possibilities. This is a perfect place to chill out and revive your batteries. Shall we go back to Mezzatorre? Oh yes. Next time, we might even get to try the hotel's thermal spa centre!

Room Tip: If you want privacy and seclusion, go for the park rooms. If you want beautiful views, go for the h...

This is our fifth, and sadly last, night at the Mezzatorre. Our stay has exceeded our expectations--it has been magical. I thought the Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii was a special resort. It does not hold a candle to the Mezzatorre. Everything from reception to service at the restaurants to the concierge has been nothing short of impeccable. Yes, this place is costly. It is a 5 star hotel on a cliff on an island on the Neapolitan Riviera. You should expect to pay to stay at a place like this. If you cannot afford a nice room in a 5 star hotel, then yes, you should of course look elsewhere. But if this is in your price range, the Mezzatorre is hard to beat.

1. Concierge service--the people in the office have helped us with everything, from ideas to daily outings (they even booked us a horse excursion up Monte Epomeo with a taxi driver who took us there, waited while we toured, and brought us back) to simple trips to nearby towns to our full return to Rome. Extra thanks to Luciano and Pasquale!!!

2. Restaurants--The food we have had here has been incredible. The breakfast spread has so many gorgeous local cheeses, meats, jams and honeys from local farms, juices of all types, eggs cooked to order. You name it! It is hard to decide each morning and very hard to find room for lunch later! We had lunch several times at the restaurant near the pool (Sciue-Sciue). Incredible selection of local fish made however you prefer, delectable pastas of every variety with every imaginable sauce, fish, meat, etc. Excellent wines, dessert, anything you could ever wish. They even tried their hand at making American lemonade for our kids! Huge thanks to Toni, Liborio, and Salvatore!! And dinner. OMG! These were some of the best meals we have had, and we have travelled the world. Try all the local favorites--from local seafoods to Ischia style rabbit. You cannot go wrong. And the service is just perfect. Domenic and Salvatore, we love you!

3. Accommodations--the hotel is set in a huge park, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Rooms are housed in several buildings. If you have specific expectations of the type of view you would like, or the preferred layout of your room, just call them! Everyone in the front office speaks a variety of languages, including excellent English, and they aim to please. Call before booking to make sure you get what you want. There are rooms directly overlooking the ocean, rooms that are very secluded in a forest like setting, all manner of accommodation. We stayed, with our 3 kids, in the family bungalow. It was just gorgeous and everybody had tons of space. The kids were crying tonight, saying they did not want to leave . . . ever!

4. Getting to town--One of my biggest hesitations about staying here is that it seemed so far away from everything. I was wrong! First, the people in the front office are more than happy to drive guests to the nearby sand beach (San Maronti)--although, as we later discovered, it is only a 10 minute walk from the hotel to the beach! The beach is attached to the Negombo thermal gardens, which are tons of fun, so you can walk to the thermal park in 10 minutes or get a ride from the front office (and the office is happy to come pick you up when you are done). The front office is also happy to drive you to Lacco Ameno, the closest town which has tons of cute shops, gelaterias, and restaurants, and another nice beach. A 10 Euro cab ride gets you to Forio, a bigger town which has crazy flea markets, another beach and fun Saint festivals which include all sorts of diversions for children (even fireworks). We did not feel isolated here at all!

5. Things to do at the Hotel--We did not use the spa facilities, although they look incredible. They even have massage beds that are perched on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the ocean. The main swimming pool is HUGE and is filled with heated salt water. The hotel sits over two cliffs, with a little bay in between. There is access to the Mediterranean from both cliffs for a refreshing swim or snorkeling. Note, it is not a sandy beach--but still a wonderful access. If you want a sandy beach, as noted above, San Maronti is only a 10 minute walk or the office will drive you there in 5 minutes. There are also tennis courts (we play tennis at our home in San Diego, but did not do so here) and wonderful trails for running or hiking. Every evening, a lovely pianist plays by the upper bar, or in an enclosed bar if there is inclement weather. Oh yes, the WiFi connection was excellent in every corner of the hotel grounds.

In short, it is hard to find any flaws with this place. Yes, there is some bird poop around. The hotel buildings are set in a gorgeous park that is filled with song and ocean birds, as well as stunning flowers, trees, lizards, everything. It is hard to tame nature, no matter how hard you try. Considering the beautiful, natural setting, this hotel is amazingly clean. And the fact that I awoke each morning to birds singing in my window makes a little bird poop very easy to overlook!

our 3 day stay here was just perfect for the end of our month long trip in Europe. Weather was perfect and everyone here has gone the extra mile. Rooms are typical european (not very convenient or large) but all in all this place is a 5 star. Spa facilities are excellent and all services are reasonable and professional. What a great spot to unwind. Sadly, we leave tomorrow for Rome and home.
For anyone in Southern Italy, this place is a must do!! Remember the name. Ferries from Naples are regular and easy - with or without a car.
It's a perfect 10 for a romantic getaway - probably not for the kids!

Room Tip: Make sure your room has adequate window views. Our room was nice but lacked and kind of view except...

This property was an amazing experience! Has it all! Piano bar, spa, POOL, VIEWS! FOOD! Service is not to be believed. Food, from local olive oils, fresh (local) cheese. Out door drinks over looking the ocean and large boats off the coast just an amazing amazing memory.

Room Tip: Cant go wrong, there are some walking / hills so be careful (they can transport via golf cart)

We visit annually and our latest trip was once again fantastic with great service and food. The location is great with the sea below us. We could not have asked for more for a seaside holiday.

Gorgeous hotel, excellent service, delicate and elegant decor, and everything’s deliciously comfy. The food is seriously pricey the dinner is 200 euros per person without wine, and a kids meal in the pool bar is around 22 euros! However, go for the excellent half board option - breakfast and dinner for only 30 euros extra a day! We had planned to stay in the Superior room as it was our honeymoon, but we preferred the cheaper, slightly further away Classic room which was exactly the same but with a sea view terrace. Make the most of the romantic peninsula next to the 16th century tower where you can see the wonderful 360 degree view. I really loved our honeymoon at this hotel, which is good as we’ll never be able to afford to go again!

Room Tip: Classic rooms are further away, so quieter, and more romantic and with a nice terrace (though try an...
