My husband and I booked the private hike with taxi pickup from our hotel in Sorrento, with hike, lunch and taxi back as a special treat. We both felt that it was too risky to rely on the buses and unreliable connections, and wanted a hassle-free day. This was easy to set up by email, and Cartotrekking were very helpful in arranging everything, and also provided guidance on timings, so that we would also get time to look around Positano after the hike as well.
The taxi picked us up from our hotel in Sorrento at 0810, and it took just over an hour to reach Bomerano, where our guide Enzo was waiting. After a short delay to make use of the facilities at a cafe, and to sunscreen up, we were off at 0930. We'd been wondering which path we would take; Enzo took as on the high path, as he felt it was safer and less crowded. We're so glad that we had booked a guide, although we wouldn't have got lost, (both high and low paths were extremely busy on a Sunday) his knowledge of the area and local plants, and accounts of growing up in the area, made the day really special. Plus he was friendly, went at our pace, and was great company!
The path was straighforward to hike, with spectacular views along the coast towards Capri, although it was really hazy. This was the case for our entire holiday though, not just this coastline.
We had been worried about how sheer the path would be, but it was a good width throughout, and nothing too precipitous. At one point we crossed down to the lower path and avoided a patch which Enzo said was going out onto rock. He really took our safety as a priority. The most strenuous part was the stretch approaching Nocelle, and we were really glad we were travelling downhill. We met a lot of people hiking up from Nocelle, who were really struggling with the uphill clamber in the heat. Walking shoes with enclosed toes are essential, definitely no sandals or flip flops. We had a walking pole each too, which helped in places. Views over Positano from this stretch of the hike were outstanding.
We had booked for lunch as part of the hike in Montepertuso, which was an extra 45 minutes walk on from Nocelle. The upward steps on this stretch of the hike weren't my favourite part, especially as we were hot and tired by then! Lunch was at Il Ritrovo, and a set menu was all laid on for the two of us, which was absolutely perfect, and gave us a well-earned rest for an hour.
Finally, we headed down the 1500 steps to Positano, which took us around 40 minutes at a leisurely pace. Great views again. Easy going down, but I wouldn't recommend walking up unless you're super fit!
We parted company with Enzo once we arrived at the back of Positano, and then had around 90 minutes to explore on our own. Such a shame it was SO crowded with tourists. We were back at the arranged meeting point in time for the taxi pick up at 1630 - this had to judged very finely, as there is no waiting time allowed and police patrols were everywhere.
The drive back was quicker, and we were back to the hotel in about an hour, just in time for a reviving dip!
If you're wondering about whether you are up to this hike, just do it, it will be a day you'll always remember. We're both in our 60s, and it shouldn't present a problem for anyone who is reasonably fit. The views are stunning, and the drops, certainly from the high path, are not at all scary. If you're going to book a special hassle-free day out with a guide, look no further than Enzo and Cartotrekking, you won't be disappointed.
