Greek Orthodox Cathedral
Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

Many of the sights are closed till the evening. The history behind the place and just the outside of the building was worth it. Beautiful

It was built around 1789 on the site of a church called " Zoodochos Pigis" ( Life-giving Source).
The Orthodox Cathedral of Naxos has been built on the central Square of the Venetian Castle and it is very easy to find it out. It is located in the north part of the capital.
The church was built from the materials of ancient temples. The solid granite pillars are said to be from the ruins of Delos island monuments and the floor is decorated by Naxian marble.
It is a baroque church, Amid the gold and the carved wood, there is a vividly coloured " Iconostasi " painted by a well known iconographer of the Cretan School : Demetrios Valvis.
You will be astonished by the interior of the Cathedral : Countless magnificent valuable icons, a calm and sacred atmosphere and the very own scent of the burning candles.

You may admire the fine wall-paintings which are richly decorating it and you will be more than welcome to participate in the Greek Orthodox Litourgy ( worship) with the locals.
The Gospel Book is believed to be a gift from Empress Catherine the Great of Russia on her way back from the Sinai Mountain.

Though the Cathedral doesn't look that interesting from the outside it is absolutely a well worth visit. What a shame that it is mostly locked and there is no way to visit it during regular hours, unless it's a Saint's day.

This is a perfect example of Greek arcitecture and Art, the interior is breathtaking. The opulence is outstanding, atmosphere is calm and sacred. If you can visit on a Greek holiday or Saints day you will be made wlcome to join in the service with the locals.

We wanted to see the inside, but it was always locked during our four days on Naxos. It isn't all that interesting from the outside, either.
