Really lovely food with many home cooked specials. I had the chicken with potatoes cooked in the oven which was really tasty. The table next to us had the most amazing starter which appeared to be lots of different types of roasted vegetables piled high on a plate. We will definitely be going back to try that.
The restaurant doesn't open until 6.30pm so if you go up in the day all you will find is a pile of chairs and tables and a couple of cars parked where the tables should be. It's bizarre!

Although a short walk/drive out of the village Kastro offers a superb menu of simply cooked but delicious food. Most of the fare is grown on the farm owned by the family and the service is first rate. A must during a stay.

Having eaten in many restaurants and tavernas in the area over a number of years, this is our favourite for an evening meal. The views over the sea and mountains, particularly at sunset are stunning, and the menu and quality of food are we would say the best in the area, down to Agios Nikolaos. There is of course Leila's at Kardamyli which serves traditional Greek cuisine, and has its own appeal and character, restaurants specialising in fresh fish, particularly at Limeni and Kitries, and many excellent tavernas, particularly at Agios Nikolaos. However, for attention, quality and variety (including traditional local food), this restaurant is to be thoroughly recommended, and it is encouraging to see locals there for their family special occasions. A short walk from the village, it does have a rather unpreprossessing exterior from the road, which belies its attractive location near the beach.

Set at the top of the old town with the castle walls behind you, great panoramic views over the town and harbour. Worth grabbing a table at the front to watch the sunset with a glass of Ouzo and fabulous food. The service is excellent and every day there are special on the menu all fresh and cooked to perfection. Probably the best restaurant in Naxos.

When we first arrived on Naxos in 1996 we were searching for a taverna for our first dinner and two ladies stopped us on the waterfront and said if you are looking for a taverna, find Tavern To Kastro. It is located high up in the old city just outside the Kastro walls. Indeed it was hard to find but it was worth the effort. It is located in a small square and only has outdoor seating much of it on slightly sloped ground with a view out over Naxos town and over Paros.

One has to experience Taverna to Kastro to really appreciate it. We travel in early season May/June and it is one of the few tavernas where people stand and wait for a table to come available. The service is slow in fact I would say they are understaffed but they have a way of getting that first half liter of good quality house wine and the basket of bread from the wood fired oven in the old town and you begin to slow down and find the rhythm of Greece.
We normally order a Greek salad and a couple of appetizers and one main dish and share them. Dinner is likely to take an hour and a half to two hours. Once you are seated you are welcome to stay until closing. This is not a taverna that operates on turning over tables
.
They serve all the standard Greek dishes with daily specials prepared from Moms Recipe book which are exceptional. Anything with eggplant, cheese and or Lamb is normally called "from the oven" on the menu, and is going to be good. Their dessert baklava is large and inexpensive and often is accompanied with a complimentary ouzo or raki. We normally pay between 28 to 35 euros for two with a liter of wine.
We have been back to Naxos 9 times since that first visit and we find ourselves at Taverna to Kastro every couple of nights.
