“Crab Shack a Welcome Surprise”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

First time here and we were very happy with our visit. It is clean, neat, with fast and friendly service. As it was warm and muggy we opted to stay inside with the A/C. but there is covered "outside seating". We still had a nice table with views of the James River and bridge. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. We had an appetizer and two of the catch of the day fares. For the warm up we had calamari and it was quite good, lightly breaded, and very fresh tasting. My wife had grilled salmon and I had blackened tuna - both great. We had fries, ordered extra crispy and they were perfect. The coleslaw was not special or at least not prepared the way we like it. It was just sliced cabbage with some sort of vinegary sauce thrown on it so we'd recommend passing on it. They had a few other choices for sides and we will try them next time. Everything tasted fresh which is important at a fish restaurant. We split a key lime pie for dessert and it was good too. For beverages we had beers and tap water with lemon. A note for fish eaters - with us food that is enhanced by lemons was served with fresh large slices of lemon. A small point but one that mattered to us. Like the service several small things were done right by our server and we appreciated it. The Crab Shack is an informal restaurant but is well run and was a pleasure. It is now our "fish joint" for future visits so we can run the list of menu items.

“Enjoyable view, good food.”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

I eat here about once a quarter, and have been doing so for about 15 years. The food is well prepared and the service is prompt and attentive. The crab cake sandwich is good, without a lot of filler, and most of the seafood dishes are pretty good. The location (northern end of the James River Bridge, next to the fishing pier) offers a nice view of the James River.

“I love this place”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

I have come here several times and have always had a great experience. The food is good and service is good. I usually get some type of crab since we are on the Chesapeake and have never been disappointed. The location is right off the JRB on the water and you'd think it'd be loud and distracting being right off the highway, but not at all. In side and on the patio are nice and relaxing and you can watch the sunset over the water.

“Out of the way..perfect fresh seafood”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

Every kind of fresh seafood the Chesapeake Bay area has to offer..prepared the way seafood is supposed to be. Even cooked crab by the dozen. We watched the sun go down over the James while feasting on fresh crab cakes and drinking rum and coke. Perfect. A casual atmosphere where a customer will feel comfortable on a special occasion or just dropping in after fishing on the connected pier for the afternoon. Offers food choices from cost conscious sandwiches to market priced fresh catch delicacies. This place was designed to please locals so you can be sure the food and service is the best possible.

“Great Softshell crabs”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We there with 2 buddies for lunch. I had the fried softshell sandwich with coleslaw. Large jumbo crab lightly floured and fried to perfection. Came with a slice of tomato, onion and lettuce. Tarter sauce and cocktail sauce served on the side, and I don't use them. Coleslaw was a generous portion of shredded cabbage with a light creamy dressing, just right, and was not drowned in it. Buddies had the crabcake with fries. Again, lightly floured with identifiable hunks of crab, and a large portion of fries. We do have 2 complaints, the buns are too large and you end up eating a lot of bread. The other is they don't serve sweet tea.
