If you have a child who loves big machinery, air crafts, etc. Or even yourself this place was awesome. Now it didnt say this in the description (it is located at Fort Eustis) and if you do not have a military ID, they do have you pull off to the side to search (minimal) your vehicle. You will need photo ID for adults and registration to your vehicle. My son (as well as my husband and I) loved it here. There is an indoor museum and things to see outside. They even have a small gift shop area in there with reasonable prices. It is free to go there, but they do suggest a donation which is easy by just slipping it inside a big clear box by the door. It goes through alot of military history with life sized people in uniforms, etc.

If you are a cicilian you will need your registration , insurance and license at the gate. This may take a few minutes especially if they ask you to step out of the car while they inspect it. The museum itself starts at the revolutionary war and makes its way to the last war giving specifics of the transportation used and history of the USA in transportation. Brought an older friend that was in the Korean War and he was floored by the exhibit and the realistic components of it. Great exhibit outdoors for large transportation vehicles including the trains used in WW2.

This is located on an active Army base - Ft. Eustis - you have do have to go thru a checkpoint where friendly, polite security staff ask you for your ID, registration, insurance card. Everyone has to get out of the car, and all doors, hood, trunk open. Quck, easy and you are on your way. I did read the one comment about problems not having proof of insurance - they seemed to miss the point that this an ACTIVE base and that it is a LAW to have proof of insurance. Plenty of parking, no admission fee (box for donation, please leave a nice one). Nicely done history of transportation in the service - right up to present day - even the hard to please teenager in our group liked it. Lots of vehicle displays, stories and when you are done with the inside museum there is some really BIG equipment outside to see. Looks like they are adding on - bring camera!

My father was stationed here during the 60's so it was neat to see the history of transportation in the military.
