“Great Cuban sandwich”
Reviewed April 29, 2013 via mobile

The Cuban sandwich was very good. It is different than a Cuban sandwich from Florida or the Caribbean, their pork is softer but taste great anyway. The staff was very nice and attentive.

“Go NOW!!!”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

My new favorite restaurant in Newport News, and the surrounding area. The flavors are authentic and oh so flavorful. It is difficult finding real authentic ethnic restaurants in this area, that are truly delicious. The search is over. We tried the Horeb (house special) burrito, filled with beef stew, avacado, rice, etc. Amazing, and HUGE. Also had the Mofongo with Pernil. Our server said the pork is roasted for 12 hours, and it shows. It was loaded with flavor and very tender and juicy. Every item on our plates was fresh, and delicious. To make it a perfect night- they also had tres leches as a dessert option. I am pretty finicky when it comes to tres leches, so was a little skeptical, well, it was moist, and delicious. Will order it again! We can not wait to go back! Finally, flavor in Newport News.

“Two great meals”
Reviewed January 22, 2013 via mobile

Have been here twice and both meals were great. Cuban sandwich, pernil plate, plantains. Never crowded, which worries me, because I don't want these guys to disappear.

“Finally a good hispanic restaurant!”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

Its about time someone figured out how to make good hispanic food around here. I had the mofongo (the mixed one which is a little sweeter) with shrimp. Man it was sooooo delicious. Ate the entire plate which is a decent size portion plus my mothers left overs (she had the mofongo mixed with carne). I've driven before to the Puerto Rican restaurants in VA beach 45 mins away just to be let down. I'm glad la pena horeb is only a few mins away. Will be a regular customer there :-)

“Great food”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

Our 1st time there. Had the Mofogos ( fried plantains) with carnitas and the carnitas quesadillas with refried beans and rice. The carnitas and fried plantains were great, slightly sweet with a mild garlicky flavor. The "gravy" was a light tomato broth and their homemade hot sauce was to die for. The fried pork was tasty with slight crunch from the burnt ends. The quesadillas were very good, loaded with meat and cheese. The beans and rice were also homemade and not from a can. As a side note, they do not serve beer, but pour a generous glass of wine. Will add them to the lunch rotation list.
