My family spend five nights at The Boxwood Inn for my son's Make A Wish trip. He wanted to stay in a historic inn. The Boxwood Inn was lovely and perfect. Kathy and Derek, the innkeepers, were awesome. They made us delicious breakfasts every morning that perfectly suited both my dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease) and my son's ketogenic diet for epilepsy. The innkeepers are very professional yet friendly. The rooms were very clean and very comfortable. We will be back!!!!

We will be back to Boxwood Inn. Staying here for a long weekend to attend a family wedding event ....but don't want to leave. The accommodations were exactly as described. The staff and service was perfect, serving up delicious meals and a great atmosphere. The Inn has lots of indoor and outdoor space for special events any time of the year, which makes it a popular choice of venues. Plenty of free parking in a large, private parking lot. We'll add a photo soon. Sincerely, Karen & Art (Karts) Huseonica, Crofton, Maryland, USA

Room Tip: The history behind each room is fascinating; fun to make the choice.

We used this spot for a wedding in September 2013 and it rocked. The place lights up at night and it's very spacious inside. They only let you use their catering but the food is awesome. The people who the place are very helpful and great staff. We love the atmosphere of the boxwood inn and our wedding photos came out beautifully because of the spacious yard outside. We would recommend this place for anyone to hold an event.

The Boxwood Inn has been around for a long time. That's it, across the railroad tracks from the very first steam engine to rumble into Newport News in 1896 (a 117 years ago)

The Boxwood Inn was once the center of civic and commercial activity in Newport News. Businessman Simon Curtis built the twenty-one-room house in 1896 and lived here with his wife, Nannie, and their four children. A general store occupied the back of the ten-thousand-square-foot home. It housed a post office, a general store and the hall of records. The ceilings of every room in the building are twelve feet tall. There are rap-around porches, and peaceful grounds.

The Boxwood's inn-keeper, Kathy Hulick, worked for Italian restaurants for 11 years, and then spent 6 years as a high-end caterer. So you can imagine that breakfasts are delicious. The three mornings Kathy's husband Derrick served us we had:

- Apple walnut waffles with fresh sausage
- Fresh garden frittata with fresh garden onions, sweet peppers, spinach, and a homemade brochette, with ham and homemade biscuits
- Cranberry orange French toast with a cranberry orange syrup and fresh whipped cream, and bacon

Kathy's offer of a free upgrade to a suite put us at the other end of the Inn from a 195-person wedding. We didn't hear anything. We had a bedroom, small sitting room and three-quarter bath (i.e. a shower). The only disappointment Carol had with the room was that it was just about the only room in the building that wasn't known to be haunted. No less than fifteen ghosts have been "documented" to enjoy the Boxwood Inn. If that sort of stuff interests you, just three of the many books that include accounts of the ghosts at the Boxwood Inn include:

- Haunted Inns of the Southeast by Sheila Turnage
- Virginia's Haunted Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown & Other Haunted Locations by Pamela K. Kinney
- A Stay at the Boxwood Inn Bed and Breakfast by Kathy Hulick and Judith Ivey

This is the heart of Baptist country, so the Boxwood Inn actually hasn't emphasized its undead denizens on its website, since some of the locals find it a little disturbing... but they regularly hold paranormal evenings. Kathy hears footsteps going up and down the stairs all the time, voices quietly singing or humming, and once as she was interacting with business people, someone was pulling the hair on the back of her head. Kathy's son and wife were standing behind her and she turned around several times during the conversation to glare at them. After the business contacts left, she turned around and said "why would you DO that to me?" "Do WHAT?" they replied. They swore they hadn't been pulling her hair.

So back to the reference to My Cousin Vinny; the wonderful comedy with Joe Pesci and the luscious Marisa Tomei. Vinny is successively awakened at the crack of dawn by a lumber mill steam whistle, and delivery of hogs, and then twice by a train rushing by. Well, the Boxwood Inn is perhaps 150 feet from some active railroad tracks, and each time the train rumbles by, it is obliged by law to sound its horn. If you love this sort of thing, and the wonderful rumble of the railroad cars, it is just yet more of the marvelous character of this place. If however you are a light sleeper and don't want to be awakened in the morning, this place may not be the place for you. (Note, reading all of the guest book entries, we never saw a single criticism of the trains.)

I spent the weekend here. I was in the traveling salesman room. Loved the whole place. It used to be an old General Store many many years ago And it still has a wonderful feel to it. The owners are courteous, friendly and warm.

My fiancee was in town for the presidents day weekend. Most places in the Virginia area were either over priced or not available due. I contacted the Boxwood Inn and got the romance and relaxation package, it included a hour couples massage, and a private 4 course dinner with a meal specially prepared by the in house chef. It was a very to have the chef proudly explain each meal he brought to the table. The food was amazing. This is a family owned business and everyone is very friendly and willing to accommodate request (flowers). I stayed in the General Pershings suite and it was amazing there was a soaking tub which was used after the couples massage and a walk in shower. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was amazing as well. If you want a nice weekend getaway the Boxwood Inn is the place.

We had our daughters wedding for 120 guests here last Saturday and it could not have been more wonderful! Kathy and crew went way above and beyond to make everything perfect, homey, and stress-free at this absolutely charming and romantic historic bed and breakfast. The food was amazing from yummy appetizers to dinner buffet which included melt in your mouth tenderloin and mashed potato bar to the gourmet grilled cheese station put out during our reception. The bride, bridesmaids and I spent the night in the four antique filled guest rooms the night before the wedding and woke up to a beautiful, homey breakfast of pumpkin pancakes and apple compote to begin our special day. Comments from our guests included " best wedding I have ever attended " from many. The cost was quite reasonable for all we got, and I loved that we could provide our own liquor. I would highly recommend the white apple sangria though which was quite a hit! The Boxwood Inn exceeded all our expectations as a venue and I simply cannot recommend it enough!!
