This is a very pleasant hotel. Had a comfortable room overlooking the harbour. 92euros. Lovely views in all directions. Both owner and staff very welcoming and accommodating. Just the right place from where to visit St Martin.

Stayed for one week at Hotel du Port, and thoroughly enjoyed the visit - room at rear was very clean and comfortable with door onto terrace. Would stay there again - excellent value for money.

Hotel du Port as you would expect sits right on the port of St Martin. It has a small reception with the rooms basically situated above shops/restaurants in the harbour.

We chose a 'terrace room' which was basically a room facing an inner yard on the first floor. For 80 euro you had a double bed with a single on a mezzanine. Although absolutely no view it did enable us to sit outside with a 5 euro bottle of wine before going out for the evening.

On the negative side was that the bathroom was a bit dingy and there were no socket points in the room to put the anti mozzie. In addition there was no fan or air con.

On a separate note, many hotels (incl. this one) have no facility to leave hired bikes overnight.

If you want fairly cheap, basic accommodation in a very central location then the HdP is fine, and as we were the only non French residents might be a sign of the market it caters for.

We stayed here for 4 nights in August 2007 and, whilst we had a fantastic time on Ile de Re, our stay was marred somewhat by our experiences at this hotel.

We were drawn by the location of this property, which is admitedly superb (although the late night fight outside the windows mentioned in another post was evidently not a unique occurance!). However, aside from this it is hard to find positive comments for this property: the staff are generally indifferent, the rooms are tired, tiny and have a musty air to them, and the whole property smells, inexplicably, of kedgeree.

What prompted this post was not to warn other travellers of rude staff or fishy smells though. It seems that, at least in the room we stayed in, the place has a problem with bed bugs. As anyone who has suffered a run-in with these little [--] will tell you, they are to be avoided at all costs!

Ile de Re is a wonderful place to spend a few days, but with regard to the Hotel du Port, you have been warned!

Turned up on the day and got a room here. Great location overlooking the port. Small room but only 70 odd euros. Bit weathered in places but I think that's the way for this standard of accommodation. We were on the first floor overlooking the harbour. Bit noisey at night but not too bad though there was a punch up right below us which was quite entertaining as it happens. And they were drunk French and not Brits. Just like being back in London on a weekend night.

Expect a very simple hotel, with plain, even sparse furnishings. Our port-view room on the second floor was verging on a one star standard, rather than the official two star rating.

There is no lift or air conditioning, and in our room only one of two electric radiators was working. The wallpaper and room in general was slightly tatty, with a light coloured stain on the green carpet. The bathroom was very dull, with just a low wattage light above the mirror. The shower was reasonably good, but don't expect the luxury of a soap holder; just Rawlplugs sticking out of the wall where one should be. There's only one tiny sliver of soap anyway!

There are two plastic cups in plastic bags in the bathroom. Wouldn't it be cheaper to have two glass tumblers to be washed and replaced as and when they get damaged? On the second day, we threw the tumblers in the bin and they were not replaced. The sliver of soap had also disappeared.

The pillows are of that annoying granulated foam sponge type, and there seemed to be a plastic anti-bedwetting covering on the mattress which made it a little uncomfortable.

A small 14" TV was on a bracket, mounted too high on the wall, with French channels plus CNN. There was only one mainspower socket in the room - awkward if you want torecharge your camera, mobile phone, electric toothbrush, SatNav, etc., whilst using your laptop to write a hotel
review!

If you intend to stay out after 10pm you must enter a pin number into a keypad to open the front door.

We did not take breakfast there. It was very nice weather so we
wandered out and had breakfast al-fresco outside at one of the myriad of restaurants within yards.

The whole place looks much better on their website.

The staff are friendly enough, but what it does have is "location,
location, location". All the bars, shops and restaurants of St Martin de Re are literally on the doorstep, with a fine view of the beautiful port.

It is but two or three hundred yards from the 4* Hotel de Toiras, where rooms cost around 350 Euros, whereas the Hotel duPort with the same port view is about 80 Euros a double.

I know the review sounds as if the joint is horrible, but St Martin is so pretty and the island so tranquil, I think we might well stay at the Hotel du Port again, but we would try and get a newly refurbished room, or pay for a bigger one.

MEAT LOVERS BEWARE!

On the Ile de Re and around La Rochelle, restaurant menus feature seafood almost exclusively. One member of our party kept moaning that there was very little in the way of viande. I remarked that almost everywhere had a beef "Tartare" i.e., raw chopped steak, but he didn't seem to have the stomach for it!
