If you are looking for a cheap no frills stay with friends this place is ideal. i cant comment on the kids side as we didn't have any but for a group of 4 adults we had a great time but the place is fairly basic.

The studio which was advertised as for 4 adults is actually a sofa bed and two child beds in a ridiculously small mezzanine that an adult could only just fit in and get up the stairs!

The studio was basic (no kettle!) with microwave and hob and clean and had a terrace to sit and eat/drink on which was the best feature as the island is expensive

We paid an extra €100 for the privilege studio per week and this was well spent as we were right next to the pool.

+'s
Location of studio next to the pool
Cleanliness of the studio and site
Free classes and activities on site (as long as you speak French)
Staff were friendly and polite and spoke good English
Reasonably priced bar (when open)
Good atmosphere by pool and on site
Lots of families and friendly atmosphere
Quiet at night
Good sports facilities (3 tennis courts, five a side football, table tennis, basketball, volleyball)
Excellent pool and pool area
Close to supermarket
Kids club always seemed busy
Free bus around island until 9pm
Never felt like we were being fleeced or getting ripped off
Good car park and security gate system
Luggage trollies available

-
Bar only open from 4pm daily
Cannot check in until 5pm
Restaurant only open on Thursday evening
Quite a walk from St Martin (45 mins)
Bike hire always fully booked
Pool area closes at 8pm
Entertainment was limited in evenings and bar area very small
Hard to spend money! Bar shut most of time
Had to pay extra tourist tax on arrival (€12)
Very small shower

Room Tip: Rooms near pool are worth paying extra for and don't go gamble on child beds for adults it is to...

We stayed here in September 2012 and there was 5 adults in our party - choice of accommodation was limited at this time of year as everywhere appeared to be closed down for the end of the season (I don't get this as the weather can be beautiful in sept/oct in France and we don't all want to go away in school holidays - if it was my business I would be open!!- however I digress!!) we do like luxury and are we are all clean freaks however we hired 2 of the chalets - we like a previous reviewer arrived and the reception was shut (something that does appear to be the norm in France in any type of business and frustrates me so much) and after a bit of good observation skills by one of our party found our keys on a notice board so off we trotted and let our selves in to the 2 single storey chalets side by side - the bed linen and towels were in sealed laundry packets so we made up the beds required and inspected the very small basic chalets - they were clean they were adequate and basic - we too found some of the items provided weird yet the lack of some e.g a kettle poor - so we had to put a "pan on" for our cuppa also we had bought a pizza from the local supermarket but had no where to heat it up as there is an electric hob n microwave but no oven - the pool was pretty cold but my husband did go in - all the other facilities appeared to be shut down with just a basic skeleton staff (the free wifi only worked near the closed down bar) - all this aside it was a good clean base to explore the island within walking distance of the capital - I would describe it as more like "glamping" it was fine for the money we paid about €250 for each chalet and we stayed 4 nights so it wasn't expensive - I wouldn't hesitate to use again as loved the island and if you are looking for basic clean self catering facilities at a reasonable price then this is suitable - just as a footnote 2 of our party paid for a 1 bed chalet and paid less then we did for the 2 bed but we were put side by side and they got a 2 bed one too so bonus probably because it was out of season and there was lots of space between chalets - all in all it was a good trip

Room Tip: Only listed restaurant and fitness centre as average as not able to not rate as were both shut!

Too pricy, too dirty, too little to do for the kids. No club for under 4 yo.
we slept on a plastic couch pull out sofa bed, the worst I have ever slept on, had to make my bed every day as it was a sofa during the day. The kids were even worse off with the worst foam mattress on the floor. an absolute DISGRACE. Expensive.
The toilet had NO ventilation and NO window it was terribly small bathroom only room for one or two at the time. difficult washing the kids in the shower. it stank in the house if people had to use the bathroom for more than pipi. Disgusting. Toilet only seperated by thin wall to the kitchen. made me sick to think off.
After we returned our doctor told us we did not have moscito bites but BEDBUGS.
Spend a whole week there.
Too far from the beach like 2 km or more. You need to bike or get a car.

I did not want to eat at the one and only restaurant they had.
The pool big. No slides etc.
Too little for the kids, nothing for under 4 unless the parents were there

If you did not completely clean the cottage, which took us 2 adults more than 2 hours, we should pay 50 euro extra. Mind you it is expensive living there already

Room Tip: If you do not pay extra to get an upgrade you may well end up in, if possible, an ever darker cottag...

Hello,

I regret that your journey doesn’t happened as you expected. In our Ile de Ré Club, kids clubs are available for children from 3 years old. Other Belambra clubs can take care your baby from 3 months. 4 people studio includes indeed, one sofa bed. To be precised, children mattress are not directly on the floor even if beds are low (about 10 cm above the floor). There is no direct ventilation in the restroom but in the shower, the restroom are located in the bathroom.
we are very surprised about bedbugs we never heard about it before we are sorry for these inconvenients.

Sincerely,

Clemence - Belambra Clubs

We stayed here with our 18 month old daughter in mid September for 2 nights - we only really chose it because many of the campsites on the Island had shut for the season and this place was offering very reasonable rates via one of the hotel booking websites.

Upon arrival, the reception was shut and it took a few minutes to find our chalet key/information pinned to the notice board. We soon realised why it was reasonably priced - the chalet was like something from a 1970's Butlins holiday camp - very dated, basic, dark and quite cramped, albeit functional. A bit of a shock really, although we look back now and laugh.

The site is pleasant enough - large grassed areas for kids to play, tennis courts and lots of chalets dotted around a central restaurant/bar/swimming pool complex. Not surprisingly for this late on in the season, everything was shut apart from the pool, which is large, great for young kids, and we had it all to ourselves. There were a few people lurking around the site in a couple of chalets but it otherwise resembled a ghost town. I expect when busy it might have some atmosphere.

Once reception opened, the receptionist was very helpful in letting us look at other chalets around the site in order to swap. I was particularly annoyed by the fact that the Booking.com website only illustrated the refurbished chalets, and that's what we thought we were getting, but there didn't seem to be many of these available. The chalets which had an upstairs were completely impractical for adults - ceiling height very low and stairs were steep and narrow. We ended up in a refurbished 2 bed single storey chalet - but it was actually quite dirty - the sink and toilet smelt bad and there was lots of grime/mould around sanitary fittings. Kitchen appliances were random - e.g. no kettle !! There was no lounge area - just a dining table.
The site is conveniently close to a super market but otherwise you need to drive, or cycle, to get anywhere.

Overall, staff were friendly and helpful but the small, grubby chalets would benefit from rebuilding, rather than refurbing. We would not stay here again.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, choose a refurbished chalet.

After reading many of the other reviews, I have to contribute (single mother + two teenage boys). 6 days end July 2012. Accommodation is basic, limited in space, but functional; much appreciated never running out of hot water! We took half-board option (breakfast and dinner). Food is French mass-catering, but sufficiently varied at dinner time, and was certainly best possible option with two ever-hungry teenagers. It also meant I had a well-earned break from cooking.
Two supermarkets very close by for anyone who is self-catering.
Beaches are about 5km away, and that's clearly stated on the site's information page.
Swimming pool never crowded, and users well-mannered. Aquagym was a fun activity for me one morning.
On-site bike hire enabled us to leave the car behind, which is appreciative for someone like me who lives 5km from the nearest shop. We only took the car out once, on a very hot day. Even for someone like me who hasn't ridden a bike in years, the île de Ré is very accessible by bike.
Teen clubs were of no interest to my two, but they made good use of the basketball and tennis courts and the pool. We also paid for broadboard lessons through Belambra.
Would I stay here again? Yes, probably. Would I try Belambra again? Absolutely.
Value for money? Yes, but I benefitted from late booking discounts that put this within this year's very limited holday budget.
Staff were friendly and helpful. What would I change? Renew the pillows.

Hi, stayed here with husband and three kids, aged 7, 5 and 2 for two weeks in July 2010, Belambra website says all chalets were renovated in 2009....but actually only the studio and 1 bed chalets were.....whereas the 2 bed family chalets were so old fashioned and outdated. We were so disappointed when we saw our chalet, it was like a 70's style chalet with seriously outdated kitchen and decor. We felt like checking out the minute we got there!

The chalet was also very dirty and the mattresses were very poor.

I sent an email to Belambra on our return to say that the website was very misleading, and to ask them to explain why they say that the whole village has been renovated when this is not true? I would have thought that this type of advertising would actually be against the law. They never even responded to my email.

The fact that they did not respond to my email did not surprise my as we found the staff in the organisation (from booking to receptionist ) to be very impersonal and totally unflexible.

The only good thing that I can say was that the kids club staff were really good, so welcoming and professional. We also had really good weather so were outdoors for the whole holiday, I dread to think what it would have been like to be stuck inside that chalet if it had rained!

We have just returned from 5 days in ST Martin de Ré and were very pleased with the little chalet we had booked, basic but clean and convenient, out of the crowds and yet not very far from a supermarket and other shops. What is best is that we were able to rent bicycles on site at a reasonnable price and did not do any driving during our holiday. Would recommend.
