The citadel overlooks the sea between the island and the mainland, and has lovely views of the port. The are signs giving information and many metal sculptures to see. There is also a little train which I imagine you'd have to pay for if you're not up to walking around the site.

You can just wander in here - there is no admission fee and it was quite peaceful, despite many people walking around the citadel. There wasn't much information on its history and the whole experience was a little disappointing.

Just off the west coast of France lays the island of Oleron, one of the towns is called Chateau d oleron, the old citadelle is the focal point but there is plenty to see around the old town and harbour, and if there in peak season all the little artisans huts are open, with live music, loved it

great views, lit up beautifully at night, some interesting displays inside and free entry - was very impressed with our visit here and very much enjoyed walking round the citadel.
