“Nice food but awful service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

The restaurant looks very pleasant close to the church and the pedestrian area of this lovely town. The food looked inviting but the service was awful. All tables were full when when we arrived so we asked a waiter if we could use a table in the inner courtyard. He agreed and gave us menus. We had just installed ourselves here when we were asked to leave by a waitress/Manageress who advised the courtyard area was reserved for residents - even though it was completely empty! We waited a short while for a table outside. We waited a longer while for menus. We waited even longer for the table to be cleared. Our drinks order was taken but we had to remind our waiter to bring the drinks. We waited 45 minutes for our food - having to intercede twice to prompt its arrival. This was the worst service we endured in our two week stay on Il De Re. The food was average when it eventually arrived. There are many better places to eat in this area.

Just returned from a three night stay here. Now we all know three star in France can sometimes be nothing more than a glorified guesthouse and a glorified guesthouse this is! Beautiful 'guest house', extremely tastefully decorated rooms, even L' OCCITANE products in the bathroom. Very clean and functional. The walls are however very thin and be prepared to hear the church bells echo early morning! Free Wifi is available to guests, nice touch. Didnt have breakfast here as this was an additional 12 euro per person, there is a fab bakery 2mins down the road.

La Couarde sur Mer is a pretty, quiet spot and hiring bikes is a definate - can be done locally. However I have to mention to those considering Il de Re as a destination, be prepared to pay! Taxis are totally over priced, was quoted 50 euro return to Saint Martin (which is 5km by bike!). Restaurants are also very pricey and obviously cash in on the fact that you would not take a taxi elsewhere at night. Le Cabine de Bain restaurant in the village is lovely, however very pricey. Expect to pay aprox 23-26 euro per main course. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with paying that much however in France I would have expected a bit more. The chef here is Irish which was nice to see, I think he also charged "Irish" prices! Other than that, a few more casual places to dine closeby. The beach is also on your doorstep in this village.

Service in the hotel itself is also questionable, my only quibble was the gent at front desk - I even think he was the owner, not the most friendly but you would get over that!

Room Tip: Ask for room upstairs at back of hotel, or downstairs in the decking area

We have visited il de re four times staying in different hotels. We decided to take a room here as it is central to the island and near a lovely beach. The rooms are very attractive and comfortable. We had a room one up from standard, good size. Nice bathroom. Good bedlinen. Very cleanWe had the Continental breakfast twice. Service in the morning was good with a pleasant French woman. Other times of the day the staff in the wine bar were young and very slow. Very casual attitude. On arrival I asked for a juice at the bar. Was asked to sit down for waiter service which never came. When I ordered he forgot the order. After a good twenty minutes I got up and complained at the bar whereupon he went to the fridge and produced the juice in one second. Not a good first impression. Would be a nice touch to leave a bottle of water in the room on arrival gratis. Would not cost hotel much. There are two particularly good restaurants in the village centre where we ate in the evening. There is a good market most days. Nearby Ars market also very good. Cycling is a must on this island to make the most of the atmosphere and scenery. Overall a good quiet unpretencious place to stay. Great for short breaks. Would go back.
