“Excellent service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

This was one of the best bed and breakfast places I have ever stayed in. Robson was a very gracious host and was always there whenever we needed some advice or tips on where to go. He even sent me an e-mail with the names of places to eat around the area which was really helpful. Breakfast delicious and our room was cozy and cute. I will definitely be coming back here next time I am in France.

Deciding on the spur of the moment that we would like to experience le Petit Train Jaune was easy but then our journey west would require two nights’ accommodation and this was more problematic as we had not realised at the time that the week we had chosen included a number of public holidays. Hotels were full or frightfully expensive, given that we had not budgeted for an extra trip. A web search provided the possibility of chambres d'hôtes accommodation which is not our usual choice. However, great reviews led us to Maison Prades chambres d'hôtes but alas they too were booked out but their website appealed and the owners were obliging and helped us find suitable alternative dates. Robson and Ben bought the chambres d'hôtes from an Englishwoman a few years back and set about brightening their home without destroying its character. We appreciated their explaining up front that the other three guest rooms weren’t available and although the remaining room was pleasant and had an ensuite shower, the toilet was in an adjoining private room but reached through the corridor. Such openness and candour shows the respect Robson and Ben have for their guests.
We were greeted warmly by Robson who told us about the maison’s history as we were shown around the house and the garden which they are steadily improving to provide splashes of colour. It is sufficiently large for three or four cars to be accommodated, approached from the road at the rear. Our room turned out to be nicely furnished with a huge, comfortable bed and the shower room, while small, was modern and clean.
You know, while the le petit train jaune was certainly very enjoyable, the little chambres d'hôtes we stayed at in Prades for the two nights was an equally memorable and enjoyable experience. Robson (Ben was away on business) was a joy to be with going to great lengths to make us very welcome and comfortable. The highlight for us was the Monday evening dinner Robson with the five other guests, a Swiss couple, a German couple and a Spanish woman. All were very pleasant people and they made us feel very at ease; as if we were with close and dear friends. The language barriers existed of course – but then again they didn’t. The Swiss couple and Robson switched between French, German, English mid-sentence with ease, including us in their conversations. Robson was a skilful host resulting in a most enjoyable evening. It was a memorable experience.
Opening our shutters in the morning, we were greeted by blue skies and a clear view of the mountains. Despite the late night, Robson obliged us by rising early to ensure we had a substantial breakfast before dashing off to Villefranche-de-Conflent to catch the le Petit Train Jaune at 08.50. We were disappointed that table d’hote wasn’t available that evening as we searched for somewhere to eat that was in walking distance. Robson had found a restaurant which he could recommend that was open but we would have had to drive and we were too tired after a full day traversing the Pyrenees even if it we were in a train! Would we return? Yes, and it has given us another perspective on the value of French chambres d'hôtes. We recommend Maison des Prades without hesitation.

Staying at Maison Prades was one of our best experiences at a chambres d'hotes (B&B) ever, and I do not say that lightly! Ben and Robson were perfect hosts - very amiable, helpful, considerate (below is an example of how they went out of their way to make us feel welcome) and hospitable. The room my girlfriend and I were in - Lavande - was charming with a warm comfy bed, wonderful furniture and a great view - with the tallest peak, Canigou, right outside the window. The room was quirky with its own character (i.e, it wasn't a generic room) and very clean, and we loved it! From the moment we got to the place, Ben and Robson took good care of us. The breakfast was great, with Robson providing many home made specialities (like the several fruit preserves, toffee pudding, freshly baked savory cakes, etc). They were also very helpful in pointing out the best places to visit nearby. An example of their wonderful hospitality is that they were kind enough to offer to pick us up from the Gorge de la Carança - a distance of an hour by car from Prades - if we missed our return bus (which we had to take since we didn't go by car to Prades)! And the price is unbelievable for this wonderful experience. I have paid much more in the past for mediocre experiences. I would gladly return here and pay more for this quality of experience.

Bonjour Rama, Bonjour Mlarlene

Apologies for this late response to your review. Both of us thank you for taking the time to share your stay with us with other travellers. We really enjoyed spending the weekend with you and Marlene. Pity the yellow train was not running that weekend, nevertheless, we are glad our advice to other activities were to your liking. It will be a real pleasure for us to meet you again one day. Our best wishes to you two.

As soon as you step in through the front door, there is no doubt that this is an excellent choice for a true B and B experience. We stayed for 4 nights in the Lavender Room that faces onto the garden. Each morning, Canigou, a giant peak, was right there, outside our window, watching over us. Knowing that breakfast would be waiting, as well as more good conversation with Robson, Benoit, and other guests, we were able to make it downstairs even though the room was so comfortable and lovely that we easily could have slept the day away. Robson gave us excellent ideas for day hikes and short trips in the beautiful Canigou area, and the Salvador Dali museum in Spain is just over an hour drive. Both Robson and Benoit speak several languages, so there is no problem understanding what special hosts they are. We will have to return.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the house have amazing rooms.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in here. It makes us happy to know that you enjoyed the experience we aimed to provide to you and our other guests. It has been great to exchange ideas over breakfast. As for the view from your Lavender's room window, what can we say, there it is, the Canigo, challenging and peaceful. We are glad you enjoyed your experience with us and it will be a pleasure to see you two again. Till then, our warmest wishes. Robson and Benoit (and the Canigo).

Robson, the owner, was fantastic. Cold beers in his great walled garden upon our arrival after a long days cycling was fantastic. The rooms were clean, a good size, with great en-suite bathrooms. Both dinner and breakfast were superb and spot on for both post and pre cycling, Robson really understood his guests needs.

Hospitality was fantastic, Robson was a genuine "nothing too much trouble" guy who was a great cook and great company when he stopped for a chat. Like most cyclists arriving at Prades, it is at the end of a tough mountain day, so a really accommodating attitude is most welcome. Cold beer, well selected red, and fantastic cheeses at the end of a delicious dinner...this place is not to be missed.

This B&B has a "je ne sais quoi"... perhaps something to do with the spot. It stands on an unexpectedly busy street (we thought Prades was a small village, but not quite) which quiets down after dinner. But once inside, we were welcomed in a peaceful, beautiful home that reminded us of a hotel from the beginning of the last century (right after it was built, of course - the home was restored with great care). Our room was at the back of the house and had a breathtaking view of the Canigou (there are already several pictures from our room here so we won't add another one!). Or perhaps what makes this B&B special is the warm feeling that Benoit and Robson brought inside us (they're totally huggable). On a more practical side, they gave us A1 recommandations for dinner, for visiting the surrounding mountains, canyons and villages, and for cultural activities in the valley. We'll go back.
