We stayed at this charming chambre d’hote for five nights in June and were extremely pleased with our choice. Website directions are accurate and helpful and although it is located on a main route, we never had a problem parking in the immediate vicinity. Our room was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean and it overlooked the lovely garden in back as well as the Canigou in the distance. We were within the city of Prades, yet the house itself was peaceful and quiet.
Breakfast was served in the garden and was more than we could possibly eat, with fresh fruit, juice, yogurts, croissants, bread, and best of all delicious home-made preserves – different ones each day as it was prime fruit season when we were there. We were also fortunate to enjoy two dinners here. Starting with a Kir aperitif and ending with cheeses and dessert, each course was plentiful and delicious.
It is obvious that Maison Prades is a labor of love, a house filled with books and treasures great and small. Even the blue polka dot jam pots and sugar tongs are adorable. More special than the amenities, however, is the air of welcome that pervades the house. At the time of our visit only Robson was in residence. Juggling all of the chores as well as the cooking could easily have been overwhelming, but he handled the situation with skill and grace. He always had time to chat, see to guests needs, and suggest things to do. Dinner was a well-orchestrated event, a true soiree. Even if some of us didn’t speak another’s language, all attempts to communicate were well received and a real camaraderie developed.
There’s a lot to see in the area, especially for aficionados of Romanesque art. After a full day of touring, it was idyllic to return in the late afternoon and nurse a bottle of rose in the garden while recalling our adventures. We considered extending our trip, but purposely left things to do in hope of returning one day. Without reservation we highly recommend this B&B. Merci beaucoup, Robson, for a wonderful experience.
