“A Fun stay as always, for a great price”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

We stumbled onto this place in search of a good place to celebrate my Birthday dinner; we were staying at a disappointing fancy castle type place a few miles away. We came in to try to see about dinner there that night. The owner tells my husband "speak English, it will be easier on both of us" Our kind of place, she has a good sense of humor. We had a fabulous dinner and the next time we were in the area we stayed there. We returned this trip and had a fun stay. They have a beautiful dining room, great wine list centered on Champagne and excellent food. The rooms are very simple and serviceable. If you have a sense of humor, like good food and value then this place might be for you. If you expect perfection, can't climb narrow stairs WITH your luggage, want someone to kiss your ***, then this place is NOT for you.

We stayed at this hotel/restaurant several years ago and it has always been in our minds to return at some point, as the experience had been wonderful in all respects.

At the moment, we are planning a trip over to France when an overnight stay at Cheval Blanc would fit in, so I e-mailed to request a reservation - twice, without a response on either occasion. We made a phone call and the response was rude and abrupt. As far as I'm concerned, all this amounts to a cue to take our business elsewhere.

Think we will cherish the memories and skip trying to repeat the experience.

Located half hour from Eppernay. We loved this very welcoming, quaint, comfy little restaurant at a hotel of the same name. Our food was very tasty and creatively prepared. The gentleman that owns the hotel-restaurant was our waiter as well; an absolute delight to talk with and he paid great attention to every detail. He really loves taking care of his customers. Food is reasonably priced. This is the place we all look for... Good non-pretentious atmosphere, homey food, reasonable prices, and exceptional service in a local small town business with A++ atmosphere. Not to be missed if possible.

We know the restaurant and hotel has been in the same family for many years. We last stayed there in 1986. If we say the restaurant has not changed since then in decor it would be true! The rooms are more modern but you cannot thoroughly overhaul a building like this without enormous investment and that deficiency shows through. Positively they have a decent wine list. Our first night starter was super but the steak was truly a disaster. Don't know what they mean by braising but it would not even cut! They did refund the wine though. Night 2 was a decent meal. The lady who seemed to be the manager did not have the warm welcome approach that we find elsewhere. we will not return.

This is the third time we have stayed at the Cheval Blanc as it is a convenient overnight stop on our way home. We have stayed in many similar small country town hotels in France and this one compares favourably both for price and level of comfort etc. The room furnishings are simple but adequate and the beds comfortable. The shower and TV work well (didn't check which channels it has however). Best of all.... it now has free wifi in the rooms which also works well. Apart from once when the receptionist was clearly having a bad day, the service has always been friendly.

The food is a different story however. We have only ever chosen the "Menu Touristique" at 21.50 euros so cannot speak for the more expensive menus or the a la carte choices. We have always been disappointed in the food but keep trying as it is very similar to the only other restaurant in town (just across the square at Hotel La Place - which we have also stayed at - but only once). The tasty 'amuse bouches' raise expectations and the slate of charcuterie is nice enough. The only other choices are goose gizzard (an abomination on the face of the earth) or oysters, which are not to my taste. We have tried all three mains and all vary from disappointing to horrible. The steak (skirt) was inedible, the confit of duck ruined with a fairly horIble sauce with added garlic that made the crispy skin soggy, and the salmon overcooked with the same sauce minus the garlic. Desserts of mousse or pear belle helene are fIne. The food that just needs dishing up is fine but the food that needs cooking is not. This menu has not changed in 18 months.

So - we do like staying here but do not like eating here. In summer there is a pizza van that parks in the square - this is where we will eat next time!

Room Tip: Quieter rooms are at the back.

Bedroom was OK, but we loved the restaurant. Excellent food, lovely ambience and friendly staff. Being Scottish, we were somewhat surprised to be served a bottle of Chateau la Clyde as the house wine, but it was fine.

We were staying in Cremant and our B&B owner suggested this restaurant - not because it is the best, but because it was the only one open. The service was slow, rude and dismissive. My husband's steak was inedible. The room is tired (rose colored decor) and there are these sad, white (used to be gold) fish swimming in the wall. Just weird! When we our 'concerns' to the attention of our rude server, she agreed to comp the cheese course. Too bad it was already included in the menu we had selected. What a disaster.
