An interesting engineering feat. I would have liked to have seen an obvious explanation of what went where.

When I first saw it driving down the hill I was like wow... It makes you appreciate the service our troops made even more. It is amazing how they could build the bridge in the middle of the war without all the technology that is available to us today. The one thing that would make this better is if they had some facts and history on display to read for those that don't know the history of this sight.

Arromanches is a pleasant and busy town full of tourists wanting to understand more about the awesome achievement of creating the mulberry harbour, the remains of which can be seen in the bay. There are various tanks and guns around the square and when the tide is out you can walk out to some of the concrete casements. The museum tells the story of the harbour although it is quite small and was very busy when we went. However, it was well explained with the introductory film from a British newsreel and the talk by the guide with the aid of huge models behind which were picture windows looking out to the remains in the sea.

I thought I knew all about the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches, but you really have to visit to appreciate the enormous scale of the undertaking. The remains of the sunken ships and some of the Phoenix Caissons can be seen in the far distance and some smaller pieces have washed up on the beach. That all of this was towed across the Channel and completed in ten days was an awesome achievement. That it was such an original idea born of engineering brilliance is breath taking.

I stood on the beach on a calm day with a slight sea mist and the atmosphere was haunting. Anyone wanting to understand the D-Day landings must see this.

Incredible sight to see these relics of the D-Day landings, still in tact on the beach and the incredible feat of engineering which went into their construction.

It is also incredible to imagine the faith that so many put in their design and construction when they were in essence 'untested' before they were towed across the sea and put together by some incredibly brave engineers under pressure. what do we know about pressure?
