Owner description: Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful romantic gardens of France and today the most visited garden in Perigord. Listed as a national historical monument thanks to its 54 acres park, Marqueyssac's gardens offer more than 6 kilometres of shaded paths in a maze of 150 000 hand-pruned boxwoods. From the belvedere, at 130 meters above the Dordogne river, you will see the most spectacular panorama in Perigord. This is the testimony of a rich bygone history and a gorgeous natural heritage. It's also an exceptionnal Dordogne valley point of view, you will see its most beautiful villages : Domme, Castelnaud, Beynac, Fayrac, La Roque-Gageac and its castles.

“Great in the evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

We went in August of this year to these gardens, these were the nearest ones to where we were staying. On a Thursday evening they open until late and the paths are lit by candlelight. They are well worth the visit but I would arrive before it gets dark and it does get very busy and when we left at just after 9pm they were still queuing to get in. There is a fair amount of walking and some is uphill. There are bands playing in the gardens and a childrens play area. My advice to make the most of the evening visit get there early so you can leisurely stroll to far end and get the views in the light and then walk back in the candlelight.

“Boxwood Heaven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

Located on the very top of a bluff overlooking Castlenaud, Beynac and La Roque Gageac. A wonderful restored boxwood topiary garden, cut in chaotic style to great effect. Lovely walks throughout the extensive gardens and woodland with wonderful views overlooking the Dordogne valley, La Roque and the Chateaus of Beynac, Castlenaud, Millandes etc. Well worth a visit. The Restaurant is also good for lunch and reasonably priced with wonderful views from its terrace - just a pity it didn't think to open for coffee at 11 before folks took off on a 1-2 hour tour - there were a lot of disappointed thirsty people! nonetheless not to be missed.

“Wonderful views and topiary”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

We stopped at the gardens on a circular walk from La Roque Gageac to Castlenau, back to Vezac and down to the start. The gardens were a delight, with outstanding views of the Dordogne, and lunch at the chateau also included memorable views (and a tame peacock family). Well worth the price of admission. (To do the walk, get the €1.50 map with instructions from the nice lady at the tourist office in La Roque - there is a series covering many walks in the area.)

“Wonderful views of the Dordogne river”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

Lovely relaxing wander through box-hedged paths with stunning views of the Dordogne river and other chateaux. The little tea room/restaurant is so beautiful and has wonderful views. There is also a lot of outdoor play things for the children too.

“Beautiful garden, good for photos”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

We really enjoyed the gardens for both hiking / walks and photography. We were surprised by how many types of gardens are here. The manicured boxwoods are only a small part at the front. There are some more classic English type gardens with select views and secrete niches. The park stretches out along a cliff with great views of the surrounding towns and chateaux. At the end opposite the chateau is the Belvedere which is a deck hanging out over the side (not for those with fear of heights). There are also paths through the woods which feel like a completely different place than the other gardens. The map they give you has both easy and more difficult routes (hills, stairs). My only complaint was about the weather which has nothing to do with the gardens themselves. It was low 30s Celsius, humid, and there were tons of little black gnats all over me by the end of it. We enjoyed the gardens so much though we still spent at least 2 hours and didn't even visit the chateau. If you like walks, parks, nature, and gardens I'd highly recommend.
