Hotel & Gesundheitszentrum Baerenhof
Ranked #30 of 36 Hotels in Bad Gastein
Reviewed February 4, 2013

The best thing about this hotel is the proximity to ski lifts, quiet surrounding and great view. This is where the positives stop. Not sure what’s the reason for this hotel to earn 3.5 stars.
RECEPTION: Do not expect any warm welcome at reception, the receptionists are more like “Sleeping Beauties”. We arrived late and the man who gave us the key didn’t speak English (fortunately I can speak bit German). We think we got different room, than we were supposed to.
ROOM: The room was very average, rather small with large shared terrace, furniture simple, but quite newish. However you can’t say that about the towels, which were aged and thus thin and also small. They’ve changed them only once in 4 days, however not a big issue. Make sure to bring your own shower gel, shampoo and other bathroom accessories, as they only provide liquid soap in the dispenser at the sink!!! Despite the location is quite, our room was quite noisy. Not a loud, but constant noise of elevator and ventilation.
INTERNET: The hotel charges for internet! Not too much, but it should be in standard in this century! Also, the wifi is only available in the hotel lobby and bar. We have managed to log on free wifi of the neighbouring hotel for a while, but the signal was low.
WELLNESS AREA: It is modern environment nicely design. BUT no changing rooms, if you want towel, you have to go back to the hotel reception and if you want bathrobe, they charge you 7.5 Euro for cleaning! Strange for wellness hotel. Swimming pool is quite small, but ok if you are not up to laps. Asian massages are good and relaxing (not too strong thought). Disadvantage is that it is right next to the door to pool area, so you hear the noise from there and/or banging doors. BIG negative is that the massages are only available Monday – Friday till 6pm, nothing in the evening nor weekend! If you go for long ski weekend, you are very limited, given that the ski lifts run till 4pm. And there is only one masseuse, so one couple needs 2 hours and that cuts your ski day.. What a wellness hotel!!
RESTTAURANT: Big DISAPPOINTMENT!!! We had (fortunately) only breakfast! The breakfasts are till 9:30 and they are short of food around 9 already! Not good for those, who are not morning people. Also, the choice is very below average and they do not provide any sweet patisseries. The worst think is the organization of the restaurant, where you suddenly feel like in the factory for tourists. All tables are assign to a rooms and you are told where to sit. First day we shared small table for four with another couple. Second day we asked whether we can have table with our friends, who came to join us for the weekend. The waiter was trying to help but had to ask the boss. The boss was VERY UNHELPFUL and not nice at all! Came to our table, didn’t talk to us at all but to the waiter and just told him in German that she is sorry… Nobody gave us any answer. Third day they totally cleaned off all the food we had on the table in we moment when we went to the buffet, even though we still had out things on the chairs and table and clearly were not done! And finally the last fourth day, when we came to our table, it was just given to somebody else.. The waitress said she thought we were already done with breakfast! So finally, we were actually allowed to sit with our friends! Terrible! this was the reason why we never went for dinner there and rather visited the China restaurant two minutes away.
BAR: Was ok with nice view and good cappuccino. Also, the service was good and nice there.
PARKING: The hotel has got free parking, however, insufficient capacity. It was full all the time so we had to park in the front of the hotel along the street. Last day we found a note under the wiper, that to avoid the ticket, we should use hotel’s free parking… Very funny!
SMOKING: The hotel is non smoking, which I appreciate a lot! However, all the smokers go in front of the entrance to smoke, so it was sometimes like a punishment to pass by…
OVER ALL: It is not good value for the money so I can’t recommend this hotel.
NOTE ABOUT SKI LIFTS: Be careful, the pricelist for the ski lift is not clear! It makes you feel the up to two hours, the price is just 16Eur. You’ll have to pay whole day ticket (46Eur), but if returned in time, they will give you money back.. We expected to get 30Eur back (as we skied just about an hour, so under two), but we were actually entitled to get only 16Eur back! It was very expensive ride!!!

Room Tip: Room 106, lowest building (down the street)- small, big terrace, view to ski slopes, noise from vent...

We chose Baerenhof hotel in Bad Gastein since it was so close to the skiing in Bad Gastein. You do not want to carry the skiis etc a long way every day, back and forth. This hotel is not more than around 5 minutes to walk, and even that requires some strengths... We were lucky to get a completely newly decorated room, really nice with modern furniture but still cozy atmosphere. We also had breakfast and dinner included which was very comfortable since you get tired after a day of skiing and do not wish to search around the city for a table in a restaurant. The food was OK but not more. Service was nice. There is a nice pool as well where especially the kids enjoyed after skiing. And several saunas if you like that.

Stayed here with my family last week. They skied, I walked and both went well due to the great Winter sunshine.
Hotel is in a great location. Just 5 mins walk to the children's skischool and their stuff was stored for free in the depot as they had rented it there, so no walking too far in the big boots.
Lovely welcome when we arrived and cold meat plate in the bar was provided as we had missed dinner. The bar has a friendly barman called Gunther and spectacular views down the valley. We felt we were flying all the time.
Pool was small and a little cool but the kids loved it. Spa was also small but was interesting. The hotel seems to also specialise in health treatments but I did not sample these.
Breakfasts were good but evening meals could be dodgy. The main courses were often salty with heavy sauces and we had a very unusual Italian Vegetarian Pizza (bread topped with brocolli, carrots, cauliflower, pickled onion and cheese!!) It was always a four course meal so we all found something we liked and never got hungry. The fish options were always good. It is our third trip to Austria so we realise this is not unusual.
Rooms were very clean and had great views. It was totally peaceful at night. Bathrooms were modern and spotless.
The town has seen better days but is still interesting to explore.Tourist info at the bottom of the hill has good info about the area. I would not advise anyone with mobility problems to visit the town as there are hills everywhere and I was certainly feeling fit by the end of the week

We were staying in the newly renovated section of the Hotel, the other part is going to be renovated this year. Our room was absolutely spotless, an Austrian Twin (two single beds pushed together) with ample room to move. The Bathroom was again absolutely spotless, no bath, just a shower, with hairdryer. Double wardrobes for storage and shelves.
The hotel bar was lovely, as was the barman ! The Reception Staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool although slightly on the small side was perfect for a quick swim in the evening with towels available at Reception.
In the Restaurant you are allocated a table on arrival and use that for the duration of your stay. Staff again, were very nice. The Breakfast was fine, with a selection of juices, cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cheeses and meat, with lovey fresh bread. However, the dinner was edible but you wouldn't order it in a restaurant !! Soups were fine, salad buffet could have more of a selection, the main courses were a bit dodgy but as I say, still edible.
The Location was perfect, straight across the road from the Train Station and the Stubnerkogel Gondola. There is a walkway to get across the road from the Felsentherme Thermal Spa which is directly in front of the hotel and there is also a bus stop just 2 mins walk from the hotel on the main street.
There is a slight hill leading up to the Hotel but its fine to walk up.

The Barenhof has a 3 star rating, not sure how it managed such a lofty assessment. We were there as a family skiing for a week. The hotel is located reasonably conveniently for the slopes and town centre, though the uphill walk at the end of a days skiing is a bit of a nuisance.
The reception is often unmanned and when is the staff rather surly. The rooms are an OK size, they esp the bathrooms are tired and the cleaners only do a cursory tidy each day.
By far and away the worst aspect of the hotel is the food, which is appalling, I have only had food as bad once before and that was in Romania 25yrs ago. It is all reheated frozen convenience food. Little in the way of fresh fruit, no juice ( just squash ) at breakfast and poor choice. Often totally inedible. Even the bread rolls are frozen, rather than fresh each day!
There is a tiny pool. On a lower floor ie not connected to the pool area is a steam room and separate sauna, though they are tucked away in a cupboard with no changing area ( similarly no changing area for the pool.
The skiing in the Gastein valley is OK for intermediates, though only 2 of the 5 areas are linked, so you have to get a bus to the others. Do not go here if a total beginner. We booked through Crystal holidays and I have sent a major letter of complaint to them about the Barenhof.
