“First Trip to Austria for Black Isle Duo”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

Have just returned from fabulous week in this beautiful area in Austria. We upgraded to 1 bedroom apartment which was spacious, well equipped, very clean and with beautiful views of the valley. Staff were very pleasant, helpful and Sissy deserves a special mention for her patience and great general information when teaching us Nordic walking! The hotel is central and ideal for exploring the magnificent countryside. Bad Gastein is in stunning location but many shops, restaurants were closed when we were there and the central square has several majestic, old buildings now in poor state of repair. Neighbouring Bad Hofgastein is great and very much alive with super shops and good choice of restaurants. We had superb holiday and hope to return.

Room Tip: Ask for view of the valley and south/south west facing balcony.

It was my 2nd time in this hotel (1st 2011), both times we had rooms towards the valley, which made it a really nice view. We had 1 bedroom aprt. which was very nice, clean, nothing to complain about except for the pillows, which were very soft and "mushy".
We stayed for a week, all this time the towels were changed once (ok), and garbage removed once (not ok). To my best knowledge, as nothing seemed moved or changed, there was no cleaning during the whole week (not ok).
Receptionists were nice and friendly, Happy Hour offers a selection of beverages for a reduced price (16:30 to 17:30), dinner consisted of a buffet, they have no "a la carte" menu, which would actually be nice. Breakfast is also buffet (we haven't tried), there is ping pong table and bowling, spa, though we haven't tried all the selection.
I wish they had a scale for luggage, as I have seen in other hotels, this would be helpful for people who need to be aware of the max. baggage allowance for their flights.

We stayed in Mondi Holiday Bellevue for 1 week, the trip was our 3rd overall to this hotel.
Hotel is very nice and clean, service is good and apartments are very good.

Negative things:
Trash was not taken out single time during 1 week (we had a pile of garbage bags in apartment kitchen corner)
Pillows look and feel like they have been in use since 1990's (very flat and uncomfortable)
In restaurant, no ala' carte but only medium-level buffet (we ate only once in the restaurant because of this)
Internet was with separate payment, and did not support multi-device usage (we were only able to log 1 single computer to web). This is 2013 after all....they should keep with progress.

We stayed at this hotel for the second time (last time was 4 years ago). The reason is of course that we liked it the first time. It is quite large, but very centrally located just a few meters from restaurant and pubs and a short walk from the gondola or the skibus-station. This time we were lucky and got an upgade to quite large apartments. Then we got a lot of space for our clothes and equipments.
One thing I don't like is that they charge you extra for internet (€25 for a week) and also an extra tourist tax (€2 each person). This should be included in the negotiated roomprice.
Another thing which is quite normal in Austria is a common sauna, but not everyone is familiar with this. At least they should have separate showers for men and women.
The breakfast, which we had included even if we stayed in an apartment, was very good. We got even a glass of Prosecco each morning.

Room Tip: Try to get an upgrade. It is hard to fill up the hotel so it is possible to get a bigger room.

As we planned our skiing trip, I encountered this hotel which had quite a fair price for 1 bedroom and 1 living room apartment in what it seemed to be a good location.
Actually the location is great, just 5 minutes from the toboggan run which is open every day. Moreover, the hotel is centrally located within Bad Gastein, so it's only 3 minutes to the famous waterfall. Reaching the skiing lifts is a bit tricky though, as it is about 10 minutes walk uphill. In this regard, my suggestion is to use the locker near the ski lift (as hotel guests we had a discount, it was about 10 euros per week), so you won't have to carry the skiing equipment each day.

From the balcony of our apartment we had a breathtaking view over the resort. The size of the apartment was decent, it had 2 toilets, a fully equipped kitchenette, 1 bedroom and 1 living room. The apartment was cleaned every day, though the towels were changed only once every 3 days (nonetheless, if you ask the cleaning lady, she will change them without questioning).

The hotel has a fairly nice playing area, which our kid (2 years old) greatly enjoyed. The spa area is also quite nice, with a big jacuzzi, 1 swimming pool, 1 children pool (they have toys on request) and sauna (both steam and dry).

We did not try the gym, nor the bowling. However, their "youth corner", with pool, video games, air hockey and so on is a total shame :-)

Otherwise, we did not try the restaurants, so I can't give any opinion on that.

I've given 4 stars to this hotel due to the following:
1. One had to pay for internet access.
2. In the last evening we had an unpleasant incident. A (eco) lightbulb from a lamp that was in the living room exploded. We were totally shocked, but luckily, no one was hurt. I don't even want to think that my little child could have been there and been marked for life by the hot shards of glass. Anyway, some clothes, as well as an arm chair and parts of the sofa were totally destroyed by the hot glass splinters. Actually shards of melted glass were all over the living room. Now comes the main problem. We addressed the issue at the reception, they came an cleaned a bit, but absolutely no apology was given, nor for our destroyed clothes, nor for the actual shocking event that we went through. The ladies from the reception said that they informed the manager, but since nobody was hurt, there is nothing they could do. The manager wrote me an apology email just a few days ago (more than 1 month since our trip was over) saying that he saw my customer complaint form and he is terribly sorry for what we went through. He added that he was NOT informed at that moment by anyone. I find it hard to believe, and a bit shameful to put all the blame on the staff, but nonetheless, he expressed some compassion and apologies.

I absolutely recommend to everybody to have the standing lamps out of the apartment, as they are not safe.

Otherwise the hotel was quite nice and since Bad Gastein has a nice skiing area and the infrastructure for teaching kids how to ski is (in my opinion) one of the best in Austria, we will most likely return over there next year.

We had a lovely balcony view of bad gastein and the valley and could also hear the live evening music from the square.

The rooms were basic and in need of some touching up as they felt well-used. But were clean, quiet and had a good range of kitchen equipment. I felt relaxed there.

Staff were very helpful e.g. helping us find a hat I'd left in another village cafe. We often ate in the jaegerhouse restaurant which was fantastic. Good selection of pizza, salads, fish and meat with stern but pleasant staff. Good value too.

This was my second stay here and I'd come back again.

Me and my wife stayed here on an RCI exchange. We phoned beforehand to find a "room with a view" and was duly put into a studio on the sixth floor with the most glorious view in Bad Gastein. Booking in was quick and efficient. I had to pay 20Euros for 7days of Wi-Fi and a few Euros for renting bathrobes. Threre was a warm and vibrant atmosphere in the hotel. Breakfast was on the second floor and it had a good variety at 12.50Euros per person. The lifts were a challenge, because you kept coming out on the wrong floors. The hotel is well situated, but the parking is very limited. Luckilly, because of my skiing injury, I was allowed to park at the entrance of the hotel. The staff were always very helpfull and friendly. At first we were surprised that our studio had no bedroom, and was very spacious, untill we discovered our beds in the cupboard. That was a new one for us.The bathroom had a big shower and the kitchen was sufficiently stocked to make any meal. Bad Hofgastein, a short drive from the hotel offer nice shopping opportunities, but the shops in Bad Gastein seemed never to be open. Tips: Get the right view, organise parking and always go by car. The restaurant at the train station (within walking distance) had wonderful meals. I will go back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Phone or e-mail beforehand to reserve a room with a view of the valley.
