All you need to know about a place is the way they deal with (minor) problems:
The cell phone of the driver of the hotel's van broke just as our train was pulling into Bad Gastein. Instead of letting us wait 5 minutes at the train station, one of the receptionists took her private car to pick us up -- with a smile.
Our favorite room gets a bit warm in the midday sun. The solution: since last year, the room has received an upgrade with superb blackout shades. Draw them when you leave in the morning, and the entire room is nice and cool when you return after your long hike in the July sun.
You run out of cash during week two of your vacation. The procedure in any other five-star hotel: "Try the ATM in town." (If you are lucky, the concierge might be able to reach into his petty cash stash, after you've filled out form 15(i)(b) and paid the EUR 5 fee.) The procedure at Haus Hirt: "EUR 100? Here we go. We'll add it to your room bill, if that's OK with you. Have a great day."
